Good. We waste way too much manpower and money chasing down pot, when there are real criminals that we should be going after...

He used to be Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He came back to run for DA after Eddie Jordan was forced to resign after firing all the white folks.

Not at all! I absolutely believe that marijuana should be legalized.

Alcohol is a depressant, yet it is illegal.

Marijuana is a stimulant, yet it is illegal.

When have you ever seen a belligerent person who was stoned? When was the last time you heard about a belligerent person who was drunk?

You are most likely correct on it being a hallucinogen, but the rest of my point was correct, I believe.

Well they certainly didn't appear to care about alcohol. I was in NOLA when i was 18 and had no problem getting served anywhere in the French Quarter.

nah you were correct. but so was he. it is classified as a hallucinogen, stimulant, depressant, and intoxicant. truth is, it doesn't really fit neatly into any one category. so, of course, most states put it in the same legal classification as crack and heroin. yay.

Alcohol? Yeah that's a daily beating of wife and kids and pretty much anyone around you.

Tax, don't give out tickets. Let it pay for "green" improvements to municpalities.

Massachusetts, too. It was voted in by a referendum on the ballot.

jonasborg: Tax, don't give out tickets. Let it pay for "green" improvements to municpalities.

Just to be clear, I agree with you. However, from the city's point-of-view:

(Amount raised from weed fines) > (Amount raised from weed taxes)

Of course, my above formula assumes that they bust every person who smokes up in the City of NO. And good luck with that. It also assumes that every person who smokes up under a "weed-tax" system bought it from a store. As to this assumption, I should point out that I lived here for years before I realized people got weed from places OTHER than the guerilla-farmed levees.

I should also point out that I've smoked up in front of NOPD cops on Toulouse St., who just wanted in on the rotation.

I guess I should look it up, but why does a depressant make people energetic, feisty and belligerent, and a stimulant make people eat Cheetos and play Halo?

2009-08-06 05:45:03 PM
Great, then let's start giving out tickets to murderers and rapists and arsonists and everybody else who breaks a law they don't think should apply to them because it's not "groovy" and stuff.

Are you a farking moron, or are you just playing one today on Fark?

See, here in the U.S., different crimes have different penalties. Very minor crimes, such as speeding or jaywalking or (depending on the state, marijuana use), have tickets as the punishment.

I know that's a difficult concept for you mongs to grasp up there in your colony, but please try.

jimmyego: I guess I should look it up, but why does a depressant make people energetic, feisty and belligerent, and a stimulant make people eat Cheetos and play Halo?

It's not a matter of depressing or stimulating one's mood, but one's central and/or autonomic nervous systems.

More to the point, though, I had always read of both alcohol and MJ as being depressants. Think about it. What happens when you ingest too much (a bad general rule, but a useful illustration in this case)? With alcohol or weed, your breathing slows, your heart rate slows, etc. With cocaine? Not so much.

One could even argue, by your logic, that crack is a depressant because a high crackhead is damn near unconscious. That just isn't the case, though. It stimulates one's autonomic nervous system, causing greatly increased heart rate, respiration, etc., while under the influence.

Oh wait, actually it just lets everyone know that you are not a fully functioning human being.

Excuse me for not feeling like celebrating.

Interesting. I would've thought that Louisiana (particularly New Orleans) would have a fairly liberal policy about pot. But, looking at the NORML site, Louisiana's pot laws are about as strict as they come. First offense for possession of any amount carries with it a 6 month jail term. No wonder why the DA is pressing for them to lighten up their laws a bit. They've got some of the strictest in the country.

Still, once you hit a certain age smoking pot seems kind of pathetic.

I would deal with someone high any day over someone who is drunk. The guy who smoked a joint isn't going to go from hysterical crying fits to raging fury and try to attack me.

I'm against the recreational use of mind altering drugs of any kind but if you are going to decriminalize a drug marijuana would be the right one. Pot smokers don't drive into farmers markets, steal tanks from National Guard Armories, drive the wrong way on the freeway or lock their kids in the trunk of the car while they smoke.

Now, if we could only get rid of alcohol.

It's just weed. Certainly we can all agree that legalizing and taxing it will not be the downfall of our society.

2009-08-06 07:01:02 PM
Hero tag definitely deserved. It's time we stop demonizing something that was mainly demonized due to racism and ignorance from a FUD campaign. We could rake in billions in taxes on legalized marijuana, spurring new industries virtually overnight. But instead of just proselytizing, take action.

You can use the helpful guide at NORML to find your congressman or senator to write. Take 3 minutes, and add your voice. If enough of us are heard, maybe our elected officials will finally realize that the red-eyed couch dwellers are just a tiny fraction of the people that (openly or not) smoke marijuana.
