"The report by the USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion identified housing as the largest single expense"

Really?

I doubt that. You're not buying the kid its own house.

It's living with you. You already needed a house. You weren't going to sleep in your car until the kid came along.

balthan: Damn speculators keep driving the prices up.

Much like domain names, you can get one far cheaper if you buy it in a strange-sounding country.

Does Obama have plans for a CASH for CHUNKERS to trade in fat kids for leaner ones?

The author must be basing the figures on teenage girls with shopping habits.

Wow. I guess it was about time someone dusted off this old chestnut. I expect to see something about it in Drew's Blog at the end of the week.

Also, a quick check of the site implies that they don't take into account any of the costs of loss of work time, higher frustration, low concentration, heartache or early death due to your children driving you up the wall.

Kids aren't for everyone, but I have to say that after having my daughter my life has changed for the better. I would spend everything I've made five times over because of the awesomeness, happiness, and genuine human emotions she has granted me.

Watching as she finds out things for the first time, and turns towards me with this amazed look in her face....it's stunning.

When she's sad or needy and she comes to me because she knows dad and mom will hold her tight and give her kisses.

Yeah it's sappy, and yes it's not for everyone...but for me....It makes everything I've done in life ...the good and the bad...worth it all to just hold her.

This is my little cupcake

FTFA: "I tell them children also have many benefits, so you have to keep that in mind," he said.

Such as....?

We're waiting.

Honestly, though. My fiancee and I are at the point where we're discussing whether we want kids or not - and between the two of us, we can't think of any reasons why we should have kids short of making our parents happy. Which, as we all know, is a terrible reason to have kids.

Read this article from Maclean's the other day, which really affirmed our desire to not have kids.

My husband and I have one.

It's awesome, we can still travel easily, we can live in an urban setting w/out feeling squashed and it's easy to get the kid out of the house for adult time.

I'm pretty sure we won't have more. The one we have is nine and I'm done w/ being pregnant. Once is enough.

They really should, too... at least the loss of work time anyway.

I mean if I were to have a kid right now, I'd lose at least 1 year, probably more from my job; which would set me back by 1 year financially (so compound that as time goes on), and if I wanted to be a stay-at-home parent I'd be out roughly 16 years worth of income which, depending on the sort of employment being left behind, can be a pretty big chunk of change.

Granted someone in the thread said they were counting housing as well... and that really shouldn't count. You didn't buy the house for the kid.

It's nice to know that, in spite of the fact that my government taxes my income and uses my money to subsidize your child-rearing expenses, I'm still going to drive a nicer car than you breeders at the end of the day.

Keep your kids. I'll take a high def TV, a trip to Rome, and a new hot young thing to shag any day.

Several of the reasons we moved into a new house last year was for the kid, so I'm tacking my mortgage payments on that sucker! :)

Yes - but my kids will be forced to take care of me when I'm a geriatric, drooling mess and I'll probably cost them more than 200k!

given that the majority of the world's population earns less that that in a lifetime, I would like to suggest that $221,000 is perhaps an unrealistic figure and may in fact represent the amount of money needed to raise a toerag with a sense of entitlement rather than a sane human being.

Soylent Green Veal?

You can recoup that $221,000 but you got to start pimping them early when they can command top dollar and they don't know right from wrong. Once they hit kindergarten, they start asking questions and you wind up losing more cash.

I couldn't agree more. Our son is six and I've seen the way adding more children consumes time and money and sucks the fun out of things. He will stay an only child and we can live in San Francisco and take long road trips and enjoy life.
