Bill was able to get this done, and quite easily. Hillary could have easily gone as a representative (semantics to send Bill), but that brings me back to the big question.

If Hillary had gone, do you think the hostages would have been released? Answer honestly...you don't have to answer here...just in your head.

Yep, but since Hillary can't go due to, you know, us not having normal relations with them it's a moot point. And I'm surprised you're doing so well at reading North Korea's collective mind. It must be tough! Maybe you should work for the state department!

So, these ladies have been cooling their heels in NK prison for 4-5 months, but the negotiations couldn't have gone through the proper channels? We have relations with North Korea through the six member coalition. We could have approached Sweden and asked for them back. We did not need to send anyone at all to North Korea.

You'd be crying like a biatch if they held you for a day. Pussies are hilarious.

Ok then champ. Cause you know exactly how long I would last. Do you ever get tired of being psychic? If two women can last 5 months, I'm pretty sure that I can last more than a day without bursting into tears. Especially if I was in China filming North Korea.

I give you a day.

BTW: When did you become Editor in Chief of Internet Tough Guy Magazine?

I'm the ITG when you are here talking like two young girls could sit it out in a NK prison cause you don't like Bill Clinton?

Riiiiiigggghhhtt..

They were there for 5 months. They have been sitting it out. They committed a crime. They were sentenced.

Honestly, you are just pathetic. Really, they were sentenced in north korea for a crime. Just....wow. Party first idiot.

And I don't dislike Bill Clinton. I dislike the way in which the United States used his celebrity status in order to do what our Secretary of State was unable to do.

Why? What difference does it make. He's a highly respected exPOTUS you goddamned idiot.

Are we going to be in the business of sending Bill to every country that is holding a American prisoner and asking for their release, especially when they have committed a crime and have been tried and sentenced?

You honestly do put politics above your country. Pathetic. You people have jumped the shark.

So I should be all "rah rah GO USA" when our citizens break the laws of another country and admit to it? When did being patriotic mean that you have to agree with what any American anywhere is doing?

Yep, they confessed. Probably not under duress or threat and with proper representation. You wouldn't be singing this tune unless it was Clinton who freed them. This will probably be the right's line of attack starting tomorrow on Fox. They were criminals.

Seriously, party before country. I've argued with you on politics, but I never realized what a worthless, unAmerican piece of shiat you were. Shameful. Just shameful.

JohnBigBootay: How Clintonian of you. Hats off to you for not going the McCain route and trading her for a newer model. In other news, she doesn't have a damn thing to do with the article we're discussing.

Well, you didn't bring it up...but someone else did. As with all Fark posters, some people try to resort to insults (not you in this case) and I was responding to the insult.

My point when I brought that up is that too many people these days on Fark dismiss the other side rather than listening to what might be a valid point. People these days talk about critical thinking, but don't actually do it.

Yes, Hillary stuck with her man. She also was cheated on. If my wife cheated on me, I likely would leave her. This is where trsut comes in. Hillary stuck with Bill, not because she loved him...but because she wanted to be close to the power.

Which brings me back to my original point. Hillary had 5 months to try to resolve this and couldn't. Essentially, she had to bring in Bill to "mow the lawn" for her because she is incompetent.

Tea_tempest_Cup: Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: jst3p: I wont go so far as to say they are stupid, but they did a pretty stupid thing.

I disagree. I think they were very brave. They tried to do their jobs and were busted by a reactionary, psychotic regime.

Brave vs. Stupid:

If there is a sign that says "Do not taunt the Dynamite Monkey" and I see that sign, understand the sign, and still decide to go ahead and taunt the Dynamite Monkey, would you call me brave or stupid?

I guess it depends on if you're job is to taunt monkeys or not. If nobody is employing you to taunt monkeys and your personal integrity isn't based on taunting monkeys, then it would be pretty stupid.

But if you get paid to taunt monkeys, and other people depend on you to taunt them well, accurately and honestly, then I suppose you would be brave.

Weeell, I dunno. I mean, it's one thing to talk about free press and the failings of a closed-down, despotic state. But we're talking about stones here.

I mean, if that doesn't prove these two underhanded women were part of a plot to take over North Korea piece by piece, I don't know what does.

I'm gonna have to go with the right-wingers on this one. Clearly, these two were part of a very, very, very, very slow process meant to take all of NK's land. One rock at a time.

So if these confessions were taken under duress, why has the United States publicly apologized for their crimes?

And FYI: POWs are quite different than criminals. POWs had no set sentence. If they had deliberately and knowingly broke laws of a country that they were in without being a part of an official invasion force, they are criminals, not prisoners of war.

Weaver thinks the Clintons had people killed.

I think it makes Bill look good. He always was a schmoozer, and it's part of his charm.

But, no...this doesn't make the Democrats look good. Again, they spent 5 months unable to find a resolution to this because Hillary is incompetent.

C'mon Say it...HILLARY IS INCOMPETENT! We know you can...

stvdallas: Yes, Hillary stuck with her man.

Secretaries of state have been sparring with that insane man (who I'm sure you may recall is part of the axis of evil)for a long time now. He says one thing, hits a few holes in one, then does something else crazy, promises to be good for a while and then shoots off a few missiles. We couldn't do this 'officially' and send the sec of state, not to mention she has other fish to fry right now. I won't pretend to know whether or not she actually loves her husband.

Here's the bottom of the article you may or may not have read all of...

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged North Korea last month to grant them amnesty, saying they were remorseful and their families were anguished by their detention.

The journalists' release followed weeks of quiet negotiations between the State Department and the North Korean mission to the United Nations, said Daniel Sneider, associate director of research at Stanford University's Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center.

Clinton "didn't go to negotiate this, he went to reap the fruits of the negotiation," Sneider said.

So, the fact is, State may or may not have been involved in negotiations and the fact is we'll probably never know. I think we do know that we should take what NK says happened with a grain of salt. I just don't get your insistence on sniping at Hilary with this particular issue - she or her minions may in fact have attained their release... or not worked on it at all. She'll be involved in plenty of other things later on and doubtless some of them will be controversial. I'd imagine it's a hard job that involves lots of compromise.

Dude. Really? NK has been a thorn in the side of reasonable people the world over for YEARS. That's like calling me a moron because I can't convince a retarded child that its poop isn't a toy.

The Weav's rationalization for his hatred of Clinton certainly is amusing...

Quick question: Are we still "at war" (and by "war" I mean "police action" but anyways) with North Korea and just continuing to hold an armistice/cease-fire? I was under the impression we were, but I figured the internet superheroes of Fark would be able to back it up with links.

Actually, hold on. It's really more like calling me a moron because I can't convince a retarded child not to hit other children when one of them steals his favorite rock.

You've convinced me. I mean except for those guys who got their heads cut off on video or were strung up in the town square or were never found, the last Sec/state got every single hostage home within 48 hours. So you're right - damn you Hilary clinton for making these journalists wait five months to come home from the insane man safely without an invasion or a single person being shot! Damn you!!!!!

Secretary of State Clinton said the reporters have expressed "great remorse for this incident" and called on the North to allow Laura Ling and Euna Lee to quickly return home to their families.

"Everyone is very sorry that it happened," Clinton said.

The request for amnesty is a shift from previous U.S. calls for the women to be released on humanitarian grounds. It follows comments from Ling's family that Ling had acknowledged breaking North Korean law during a recent phone call. Ling also reportedly told her family that she and Lee need the U.S. government's help.

The women were working for U.S.-based Current TV. The North said they documented their journey into North Korea, even pocketing a stone to commemorate the illicit trip across the frozen Tumen River from China.

"This is a regrettable incident," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters later Friday.

"North Korea announced that these two journalists had been convicted, legal process. Accepting that, we simply have called for their release, and we hope that happens as soon as possible," he said.

Translation: "We know they committed a crime, but could you let them come home, please? We are all really sorry that they broke the law."

Lessee...Bill Clinton does something good. This is good for Bill.

For Obama, it means squat. Obama is spending the country into a hole it will probably never get out of and you're probably cheering him all the way. I didn't agree with much of Bush's spending, I definately didn't agree with the bailouts of the banks and auto industries and I was most definately against this insane budget that has been proposed.

THAT is what's going to matter in 2012, not whether 2 journalists got freed by an ex-president. Unfortunately, it's not going to help the Libertarian party, and the Republicans AND Democrats are going to continue to run this country in to the ground.

ratdog99: Bill was one of the greatest Presidents ever. My list:

1. George (who refused to be King of America - no small thing to turn down, IMHO)
2. Abe
3. FDR
4. Tom Jefferson (who was better at things other than being President, but the man could write)
5. TR
6. Ronald Reagan (and although I am an unabashed liberal - I have to give him his due. I always thought his wife was wacky, but he was the right guy at the right time (especially after Carter)).
7. Bill
8. DDE (another right guy at the right time)
9. HST (nothing like a sign on your desk that says the buck stops here)
10. Maybe Polk - but I am not that old and don't know all that much about him.

I call shenanigans. Hunter S. Thompson was never President!
