Yay- Bill delivers.
I still wonder why Al Gore didn't do this. I guess NK wanted the "Big Dog"

What part of "no normalized diplomatic relations therefore no official negotiation" do you guys not understand? Jeez, it's not that tough a concept.

That doesn't make sense... So the on-again / off-again multilateral talks that we have been conducting over the last few years somehow manage to get around an "official normalizing of relations," but a one-off meeting between a govt official and NK's gov't would... i see now.

Lots of that here.

Aarontology: I suspect Bill went so in the event that the prisoners weren't released, it wouldn't reflect as poorly on the Obama administration. If Hillary had been sent and been denied, it would have ruined any credibility she had with the rest of the world.

Bill getting rejected would be easily explained away as "North Korea not negotiating with non governmental officials" or something. But, as we all know, Bill never gets rejected.

Or it could have been Obama saying "Get this done for me, and you're our next ambassador to the UN" or something.

The first understandable explanation I've read. Thanks

Thunderpipes: I am mostly conservative, but you know what? I always liked Clinton.

The dude gets a bad rap. I hated some of his legislation but he's one of the best speakers in the history of the office and he's whip-smart. I personally think that's part of why Bush looked like such a buffoon - the dude he was following was one of the smoothest operators of all time. I'm not one of those that thinks Bush had a 70 IQ but I'm pretty sure which one of them would finish the Sunday crossword first. Wait - that's not completely accurate - there's no way in hell Bush could finish the Sunday crossword.

More than 9/11 happened.

Do you remember Bush's approval ratings before he went partisan? When everybody got behind him cause it was the right thing for the country?

The Bush tax cuts helped out most tax paying Americans but are attacked as being for the rich only.

My point is you are claiming that he was never attacked is not true but no matter what I point to you will claim that it was not good for the country due to your political view points. There are million in Iraq who will disagree about how bad things are there and their GDP is 30% higher now and lots of women who once lived under Taliban rule will disagree in Afghanistan as will Bob Geldof praising Mr Bush's efforts over Aids and malaria in Africa; or to Manmohan Singh, the prime minister of India, who told him last week: "The people of India deeply love you."

Did he do a lot of crap, sure did. Congress does it constantly. I am not saying that what Clinton did is not great and should not be celebrated but rather the criticisms seen here are the same things we saw before. That no matter what happens good or bad someone will turn it into a political talking point about how bad the administration or person is. Obama policies could turn the economy around and someone will say it was Bush policies taking effect that fixed it all.

I get the feeling this was a way for Kim to send a message to the US about the future of his country. Obviously he's not doing well health wise. He probably wanted 5 minutes to talk to Bill about how he wants the US to deal with his son after he dies.

Clearly Bill will tell Obama every word they said. I'm sure there was lots of diplomatic subtleties in what went on.

Nobody wants Al Gore if they can hang out with Bill Clinton.

That man is so charismatic he can make ladies melt at 50 yards just by briefly glancing at them and acknowledging their presence. Find me a hetero woman between 15 and 90 who wouldn't.

He is so unbelievably magnetic that people forget the major mistakes he made in office. Except the gays. The gays remember... everyone else is all, "Wow! This guy is amazing!" Of course, 8 years of Bush makes even Nixon look AMAZING in comparison.

The power of Clinton.

got it. thanks!

She did do her job. Which in this case was to set her ego aside and do the right thing instead of making this all about her and putting herself in the limelight. There was NO good reason for her to be involved with this publicly, only behind the scenes. She has an official position, Bill does not. We were able to get the hostages back without giving up as much face. Trying to send in the SoS no matter who they were, would have put us in a weaker position.

Kinda hard to have a meaningful dialog with someone who did a lot of immature name calling. For all we know Bill may have let them know he wasn't impressed with the off color remarks about his wife.

So, among those who are not relieved that the journalists are being freed and the situation has resolved peacefully, there appears to be two schools of thought:

1. Bill is no longer in office, therefore the Obama administration is weak and ineffective.

2. Bill was acting in cooperation with the Obama administration, therefore the Obama administration is negotiating with NK.

Gosh, it's almost as if critics of the Obama administration are finding fault for the sake of finding fault.

As I said earlier, it worked, and good for Bill.

For those of you saying that this was unofficial, perhaps it could be considered as such. I think North Korea might view that differently based on what was discussed.

However, this is from the CNN article:

Clinton expressed words of sincere apology to Kim Jong Il for the hostile acts committed by the two American journalists against the DPRK after illegally intruding into it," the news agency reported. "Clinton courteously conveyed to Kim Jong Il an earnest request of the U.S. government to leniently pardon them and send them back home from a humanitarian point of view.

"The meetings had candid and in-depth discussions on the pending issues between the DPRK and the U.S. in a sincere atmosphere and reached a consensus of views on seeking a negotiated settlement of them."

To me, this doesn't look to be the work of a private citizen, but someone that was acting on behalf of the U.S. goverment to negotiate.

Again, this is something our Secretary of State should be doing. If Bill was over there just to seek the release of the two journalists, then that should be all he addressed. It wasn't.
