Lando Lincoln: Killer Cars: Not taking a dump on Clinton, but I think any former President could've gotten them out.

Maybe, but I would have been a hell of a lot more nervous if we had sent George W. Bush over there to sort things out.

Somehow I think you could have gotten them out. This was negotiated well before Bubba even got on the plane.

He just get's the special "Mile High thank you" on the trip back.

Wow, really? I think I'd like some of whatever you're smoking, because over here in reality, the answers have been pretty clear and concise.

So, because we don't have normalized relations, we should send Bill Freaking Clinton? Like he won't set off bells and whistles all around? His wife is the Secretary of State for chrissake's. He's a former President. This was anything but an on the sly trip. If they wanted to get these women home without negotiating, there are ways.

What people here are saying is that it's ok to negotiate with a crazy person who could have nuclear weapons as long as it's not official.

Right? Pity it didn't work...

Probably closer to NK doesn't recognize women as people who can hold positions of power.

Just say it. You love your party more than your country. A victory for Americans that is a victory for Obama or Clinton is not something you can back.

Just man up and say it.

Weaver95: 2. Why was *BILL* doing this? He's not a member of the US government. He holds no official position. He is not empowered to negotiate on behalf of the US government. How did he get involved in this and why was he permitted to go and negotiate for the release of these hostages?

I suspect Bill went so in the event that the prisoners weren't released, it wouldn't reflect as poorly on the Obama administration. If Hillary had been sent and been denied, it would have ruined any credibility she had with the rest of the world.

Bill getting rejected would be easily explained away as "North Korea not negotiating with non governmental officials" or something. But, as we all know, Bill never gets rejected.

Or it could have been Obama saying "Get this done for me, and you're our next ambassador to the UN" or something.

Weaver95: So Hillary is weak and only Bill can do her job?

Don't be willfully obtuse. Hillary is on the US gov payroll and is a high-ranking member of the current administration. Bill Clinton is a former president. Sending secretary of state Clinton would mean the US government is negotiating with NK. Sending former president Clinton on a "personal errand" means only that a former president is asking NK to do something (officially)

It's a stupid game we're all playing, but it works out on paper.

No. Hillary Clinton could not have done it because she is the Secretary of State. This particular negotiation could NOT have been done by her because of her job.

If she HAD gone, would you be happy with that or complain that she's entering into bilateral talks with the NKs when the position of the US has always been to have 6 way talks?

I don't know. I have a feeling it wasn't much. And Bill wasn't doing anything special, aside from bothering the shiat out of Hillary.

"Hey, watcha doin?"

"Go away, Bill, I'm busy with things."

"Yeah? Anything I can help with?"

"No. Did you water the plants like I asked you to?"

"Twice. And I took out the trash and walked the dog. Come on! Give me somethin' ta do!"

"Oh, for Christ's sake...here...someone's got to go over and pick up these two reporters from North Korea. I've been meaning to get over there this week, but I've been too busy."

"All right! Now that sounds like a pretty sweet job! Don't worry about nothin', darlin'. I'll get those two Asian girls back home! And I promise not to sleep with either of 'em!"

"Yeah, whatever."

My apologies to the Clintons. I'm proud of Bill for this.

Why the hell are you people dumping on the two asian women who were just freed? From what I remember reading when they were captured they were in China taking pictures of North Korea(across the river). The NK guards saw them, traveled over the nearby bridge into China, basically kidnapped the journalists and broughtthem back over the bridge into NK.

The journalists were NOT breaking NK laws, they wern't even in NK until the NK guards kidnapped them.

/someone please correct me if I am wrong about this.

If the US Government sent an official diplomat to N. Korea it would be considered officially recognizing the regime.

Bill Clinton/Al Gore/Carter/Powell/etc can act unofficially. Thereby eliminating the whole issue.

Weaver95: North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has pardoned two jailed American journalists and ordered their release following an unannounced meeting with former President Bill Clinton, the North's state media said early Wednesday.

hmm...

two things come to mind:

1. What sort of bribe did we pay to get those two reporters released?
2. Why was *BILL* doing this? He's not a member of the US government. He holds no official position. He is not empowered to negotiate on behalf of the US government. How did he get involved in this and why was he permitted to go and negotiate for the release of these hostages?

exactly..... my reasoning goes: maybe the Obama administration felt that they need to do something w/o being officially connected to the actual negotiations in such politically tense situations. Bill still has a lot of political pull...the fact that journalists worked for Al Gore (indirectly)--Bill's vice pres...or maybe Al gore just decided to call in favor from the Pimp himself.

/Jesus, i sound like a conspiracy nut job.

Corvus: stvdallas: Good of Bill to do this....however a few questions here...

Why was he doing this, and not someone official from our government such as Hillary? To me, this is more of a failure of Hillary than a success of Bill. Is Hillary so incompetent that she still needs to rely on Bill to do the real work?

Hillary is our Secretary of State, for gods sake...

The reason you don't send the Secretary of State or any real official is because then the country with hostages will start asking for something in return.

When you send someone not part of the administration they don't have the ability to officially speak for the Admin and thereby not pressured into making a deal for people's return.

Yes. It's sort of amazing how many people don't get how diplomacy (or unofficial "this is not the government acting" diplomacy) works. Going full cock out is not the answer to every situation in the world.
