North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has pardoned two jailed American journalists and ordered their release following an unannounced meeting with former President Bill Clinton, the North's state media said early Wednesday.

hmm...

two things come to mind:

1. What sort of bribe did we pay to get those two reporters released?
2. Why was *BILL* doing this? He's not a member of the US government. He holds no official position. He is not empowered to negotiate on behalf of the US government. How did he get involved in this and why was he permitted to go and negotiate for the release of these hostages?

Mongo cut wood: Obama probably sent him over with billions of our money or traded nuke missile technology to get them back.

Your shiat gets staler by the day.

It's a shame that Bill Clinton can never be discussed again without a horde of unoriginal retards zooming in screaming dick and fart jokes over everyone.

CraicBaby: In the picture accompanying the article, Kim looks awfully thin compared to older photos. It certainly lends credibility to the stories about him being deathly ill.

FTFY.

Behold the power of the Clenis!

"We are so grateful to our government: President Obama, Secretary Clinton and the U.S. State Department for their dedication to and hard work on behalf of American citizens. We especially want to thank President Bill Clinton for taking on such an arduous mission and Vice President Al Gore for his tireless efforts to bring Laura and Euna home," the families said in a joint statement. "We must also thank all the people who have supported our families through this ordeal, it has meant the world to us. We are counting the seconds to hold Laura and Euna in our arms."

What?

2009-08-04 04:49:52 PM
I think Al Gore shuld have gone and got them back. They were his empoyees, after all.

She is. We don't have normalized relations with North Korea, on account of the fact that they be crazy.

So we send Bill? Why didn't we just send in a SEAL team to get her? This was about diplomacy, and should have been done by Bill's wife, as that's her job.

This isn't 'nam, there are rules.

Maybe, but I would have been a hell of a lot more nervous if we had sent George W. Bush over there to sort things out.

Been asking this since the start of the thread.

The answers have been:

Something something official recognition something something Hillary has a vagoo something something Bill's a pimp something something Just Cause something something.

Sigh. Attention whore dictator got the attention he wanted again. What a piece of theater.

The release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee was a sign of North Korea's "humanitarian and peace-loving policy," the Korean Central News Agency reported.

Comedy gold!

Uh-huh. Howabout "A sign of using humans as pawns to get what you want", dickheads.

And yes, for those wondering why Bill instead of Hillary, 5 other posters already pointed out we don't have normalized relations, so we have to send someone theoretrically uninvolved 'on the sly' but it's so obvious that it hurts.

If people wouldn't play so dangerously close to the North Korean border just to get a shot for a video, we wouldn't have to play to NK's theatrics to get them out of there.

You can get your shot 10 miles back, you don't have to go into the grey area where the NK millitary patrol. Thanks Al Gore, for bankrolling these moron journalists.

Yes, the subject they were covering (smuggling and sales of NK women) is very serious and worthy of coverage, but you don't have to put your ass right on the line for it, risking an international incident.

Since this trip was unannounced, it was probably Bill doing some sort of sex tourism thing.

Kim had probably sold the asian chicks to a brothel. Bill requests the 'freshest catch' from the madam. He walks into the room, the girls recognize him, and he comes up with the whole 'humanitarian rescue' thing to cover his ass.

The real shiat is gonna hit the fan when he gets home. He told Hillary he was hiking the Appalachian trail, and gets caught with both hands full of hot yellow poontang.

The bribe of some sort of attention from the USA.

2. Why was *BILL* doing this? He's not a member of the US government. He holds no official position. He is not empowered to negotiate on behalf of the US government. How did he get involved in this and why was he permitted to go and negotiate for the release of these hostages?

He's proven to be an excellent negotiator, and he can be sent as a representative of US interests without directly involving the government per se, which would have been Kim's real feather in the cap. We denied him that.

Because he is not a member of the US government. He holds no official position. He is not empowered to negotiate etc, etc, etc.

What the NKs got was a visit from a celebrity who has at least the halo of authority. Kept the US from appearing to entertain the idea of bilateral talks wheil still gwetting your journalists back.

I think you answered your own #2 question there. Sending Bill allows the US to send somebody with some credibility who isn't part of the government to go and meet with the NK government.

1. Not all nations will accept a woman representative.
2. This wasn't an official act by the US government.
3. Bill Clinton could have been acting on behalf of Gore.
4. It's not called a bribe here, it'd be a ransom.

It was a success for America but you can't back it cause there is a CLinton involved. Congrats, you've devolved back into a partisan idiot.

And that's exactly why he went instead of Hillary. He's just a citizen on a humanitarian mission, not a representative of the evil capitalist empire or a pinko librul Obamabot negotiating with turrist dictators.

I'm glad about that, but the "story" they're trying to sell is ridiculous. There is simply no way this could have occurred without major staging. Even the NK citizens probably realize that it's more Dear Leader gov't bullshiat.

So, because we don't have normalized relations, we should send Bill Freaking Clinton? Like he won't set off bells and whistles all around? His wife is the Secretary of State for chrissake's. He's a former President. This was anything but an on the sly trip. If they wanted to get these women home without negotiating, there are ways.

What people here are saying is that it's ok to negotiate with a crazy person who could have nuclear weapons as long as it's not official.
