cameroncrazy1984: The_Six_Fingered_Man: Huh. Here I thought the OTHER Clinton was SecState.

She is. We don't have normalized relations with North Korea, on account of the fact that they be crazy.

So we send Bill? Why didn't we just send in a SEAL team to get her? This was about diplomacy, and should have been done by Bill's wife, as that's her job.

FTFA - It's only the second visit to Pyongyang by a former U.S. leader. Jimmy Carter traveled to North Korea for talks with Kim's father, Kim Il Sung, in 1994 in a groundbreaking meeting during a time of similar tensions.

Baby steps, folks. Sometimes progress happens in baby steps. Maybe the current Kim will kick off soon and his 20-something son might be more open to the rest of the world. That's my hope, anyway.

/Literally cheered when I read the news.
//Will be WAY happier when they're back on American soil.

brainiac-dumdum 2009-08-04 03:27:13 PM Damn, how long was Clinton over there?
=================================

Not long. The reuters article that announced he was over there was (released) at 3:13pm. The article that announced that the journalists were free? 3:23pm.

I found that hilarious.

Killer Cars: Not taking a dump on Clinton, but I think any former President could've gotten them out. NK got their name in the paper, which is all they wanted.

Perhaps any high-profile American. Samuel L Jackson, anybody.

Perhaps all NK wanted was US-based newspaper headlines stating that the US will sometimes bend to another's countries will? Making Sam say "Uncle" can be more valuable than aid.

stvdallas: Good of Bill to do this....however a few questions here...

Why was he doing this, and not someone official from our government such as Hillary? To me, this is more of a failure of Hillary than a success of Bill. Is Hillary so incompetent that she still needs to rely on Bill to do the real work?

Hillary is our Secretary of State, for gods sake...

Wow, didn't think of that at first, but
THIS

I wonder if he got the USS Pueblo back too?

2009-08-04 04:43:05 PM
Well, I do suppose that Clinton can confirm if he actually *met* with Kim Jong-il.

Given all the stories about the man being deathly ill, I was wondering if Kim'd show up, period, or would he send a spokesman.

So it's not the US bargaining with the tinpot despot of a bullshiat little country. As a former president, Bill can give 'lil Kim his ego stroke without having to formally involve the government.

Shrewd. And good on Mr. Clinton for getting the job done.

The reason you don't send the Secretary of State or any real official is because then the country with hostages will start asking for something in return.

When you send someone not part of the administration they don't have the ability to officially speak for the Admin and thereby not pressured into making a deal for people's return.

He did. Kim Jong Il promptly ate them.

2009-08-04 04:45:17 PM

cameroncrazy1984: lincoln65: WAY TO GO, CLINTON- that's all we needed! Let's give North Korea the legitimacy of governmental contact with the US.

And which branch of the government does Bill work for?

Probably the Department of Law. Barely heard of it not too long ago.

2009-08-04 04:45:27 PM
Since these two ladies apparently admitted they were in the wrong, shouldn't they be brought up on charges in the USA for contributing to an international incident?

Their damn decisions got them in that position in the first place!

They get caught, and we have to come a-running? Where is the accountability for these two idiots?

2009-08-04 04:45:47 PM
Way better than my headline.

2009-08-04 04:45:50 PM

stvdallas: Why was he doing this, and not someone official from our government such as Hillary?

Because of this:

2009-08-04 04:45:51 PM
For those asking what Kim got out of it, he got time in the sun and a domestic PR victory from the way things panned out. At first we were wanting their release "on humanitarian grounds," in other words, we wanted NK to admit they blew it out of proportion. We ended up apologizing for these women's "hostile acts" and they received clemency; in plain English we granted that they were misbehaving and doing whatever NK said they did.

Yeah, nobody outside of NK believes that we had a couple female journalists planning to start shiat so it isn't like the US's rep is going to suffer irreparable harm, but in a sense our nation did go groveling for the freedom of these two. We gave up face for their freedom. NBD to our everyday lives, but I hope these chicks have to prove they can read a farking map before we let them out of our borders again.

Isn't this pretty much the same headline from an earlier greenlight?

Anyway, he done good.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Do you honestly believe ol' George W. Crackhead, Mr. "Axis of Evil" himself could have done that?

Hell, that drunkard probably can't even find N.K. on a map, let alone try any diplomatic skills.

2009-08-04 04:47:23 PM

Country_Goodness and Green_Peaness: Of course he'll release them. This is exactly what he wanted. You get some ailing crackpot with 0 international credibility, he pulls a stunt to shanghai 2 journalists under a Stalinist trumped-up charge of espionage, then you have an ex-president of the United States come hat-in-hand in front of international media to ask for their return.

The guy's a one trick pony. This is the exact same ploy as getting something for free from the U.N. to halt nuclear testing, renegging on your pledge to stop, and then forcing even more from the International Community to stop again - this time for realz!

Not an ex-president. A cabinet member maybe. Should've sent Hillary, but not the ex-president. This is like a warlord entertaining a plea of leniency from an ex-emperor.

Not to defend L'il Kim in any way, but those two journalists are not exactly the brightest light bulbs.

What did they think would happen in a Stalinist, paranoid, repressive, and dirt poor country?

In the picture accompanying the article, Kim looks awfully thin compared to older photos. It certainly lends credibility to the stories about him being deathly ill.

First Black President Birr Krintong to Dear Leader: "Where's da Chinaman womens at?"

Heck I wonder if the Algore-employed "journalists" getting captured was just a part of the ruse.

/Why yes, those are quotes from random Freepers...
//I had to go check in and see how they'd try to spin this.
/They're as insane as you'd expect.
//I'm very happy to hear that these two will be coming back home.
