But the fact that there are digital cameras that don't make a shutter click sound is of the utmost importance, right Congressman?

A very quick google shows that 18% of the people in NY state are uninsured. Are you sure you want to run with that, Pete?

No, that's the perfectly healthy 18% that doesn't want the gub'ment interfering with their choice to not have insurance.

Only those lazy freeloaders who get sick or suffer injuries worry about health care! The rest of us can get by on bootstraps and flag lapel pins!

2009-08-03 06:20:26 PM
Considering I just mailed my COBRA paperwork in after getting laid off, and that the 65% subsidy included in Obama's stimulus package is what makes continuing my health care actually affordable while I look for a job, I beg to differ.

Anecdote doesn't equal data, of course, but...every political poll I've ever read has asked the first question in an open-ended fashion -- that is, the person being asked is not given any options to choose from and the person gets to respond without being pushed in any particular direction.

The first question is usually "What issue is most important to you and your family?" and overwhelmingly the open-ended answer is a variation on "paying for health care/medicine."

This is the same guy who went on TV enumerating the many reasons why France sucks back before America started the occupation of Iraq when France was the only voice of reason. He sounded like an ignorant dumbfark hick American vomiting the party line.

This might just be the stupidest thing any elected official says all day.

Want free healthcare? And Welfare? And Food stamps? Pay no taxes?

Take a drug test, or STFU.

I believe last weeks comment of "why should we read the bill" was stupider.

Mr. King, I beg to differ. And so does America.

As someone who lives in his district, I can take an educated guess that the percent of uninsured in our district is pretty well lower than the state average.

Still an incredibly stupid thing to say.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Pay no taxes?

It is impossible not to pay taxes. While it may be possible to not pay income tax, it is impossible to avoid paying all taxes all together.

I really can't disagree either. But I'm of the mind that Congress members should undergo testing before they're allowed to legislate it to anyone.

Yes, line all of the uninsured children up and make them take a piss test.

2009-08-03 06:40:41 PM
I'm a grad student who makes about 10k a year, is too old for his parents' insurance, and is underinsured.

My insurance doesn't cover doctor's visits, so I can either pay for it out of pocket, or wait and hope that it doesn't get worse or go to an emergency room when it does.

I had a friend who died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She was uninsured, so she waited months to go to a doctor even when she was having pretty severe symptoms. She was in her early 30s.

Congressman Dickwad can go DIAF.

It isn't one of my big concerns.

2009-08-03 06:45:22 PM
To the point of the article, I mean...if healthcare was really such a big deal, why aren't there people out there making a big scene about it?

I'll tell you why. Because the people who want to see real reform were disheartened and depressed from the get-go about Obama's Republican health care bill. If you're a single payer advocate, why would you be out there cheering for something even he said is off the table?

This is just as guess, but many people who know how to "work" the system can probably figure out how to pass a UA.

That's keeping in mind that UAs are really more about catching Cannabis users than users of heavy drugs, since most of the really "bad" drugs no longer detectable via the urinary system within a few days of discontinuing the use of those substances.

Of course, under the current system they can be abusing the hell out of alcohol, tobacco and OTC drugs (not to mention stuffing their faces with fast food) and pass any "drug test" anyway.

I would be certainly more open to the whole idea if there was a single person on the face of this miserable rock that has actually read the entire bill.

Fear. Uncertainty. Complacency. Vocal minority opposition.

Health care benefits definitely suffers from the "devil you know" thing.

Obama farked up.

And I said as much back when his office sent out an email to go shill for an unknown. It's miserable on account of the Administration. He thinks it's 1992.

Not to diminish the severity of sexual crimes, King is one of those people that goes into hysterics about it. He sees pedophiles around ever corner.

2009-08-03 06:49:55 PM
"I think the last poll showed 14 percent see health care reform as being a major issue," said the New York Republican...

King's polling reference was to an NBC/Wall Street Journal survey released last week that showed health care was the third highest priority for the public. Job creation was the top priority of 38 percent of the public; the deficit, 17 percent; and health care 14 percent.

What an asshole.

If I'm being attacked by a shark, my main priority is not dying. My next priority is not being paralyzed. My third priority is keeping all my limbs. That doesn't make dismemberment a minor issue.

Slightly less than half of America still thinks that the Republican Party is still the better choice. A third of this country supports Palin as a potential presidential candidate.

Either the Republicans have become masters of catering to the middle class while truly only serving the needs of the wealthy, or this country is going full retard.

I'm afraid it's more of the latter. Was watching clips today of people at town halls yelling and screaming over Democratic representatives trying to discuss healthcare issues. Waving Bibles in the air and yelling over any attempt at reasonable discourse. This is how fanaticism grows out of hand, people.

Want the fire department to respond when your house is on fire? Want police protection? Want to drive on a road?

Take a drug test, or STFU.

Precedents are a dangerous thing...if you say it's ok to drug test people who receive certain benefits, you open the door for drug testing for any other benefits. You may think I'm being stupid, but 30 years ago, roadchecks of any kind were illegal. Then they said they could have them to look for DUIs. Now they stop you to see if your seatbelt is fastened, your inspection is expired, or whatever else they can find since they have you stopped. Government never stops when they get a precedent established for something reasonable, it always progresses into the unreasonable.

health care reform is only important to those who go to the doctor. I don't. It isn't important to me. I'm also not addicted to painkillers. If I were, then I would be desperate for free drugs, err, free health care.
