"There's a hard-core cult of true believers who grew up coming to
the fair and wouldn't miss it," said Dick Molpus, who hasn't
skipped one in his 59 years.

Huh. I wonder if he's any relation to Rod Waurtsouz.

TFA: "PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (AP) -- Out on the cabin porches where fairgoers have gathered for decades, it's old home week.

There's gossip, how's-your-mama banter, ice-cold sweet tea and, if you know where to look in this mostly dry county, a little hooch."

This is not a planet I am familiar with.

I agree Myrtle Beach has a lot of rednecks, but think that a true Redneck Riviera should be so bad it doesn't even have a beach.

Then there's the petit Redneck Riveria, which is toobing down the Guad in New Braunfels.

You guys obviously haven't seen my cousin's new above ground pool. Seven dogs reside underneath it and there's a bud light tap tied to the spoiler. There's a partially submerged El Camino on cinder blocks right beside the life sized ear wax sculpture of Dale Earnhardt. The algae is cut short in front to create the mulletesque allure.

This, at least, is absolutely true.

FTFA: "...the narrow cabin sites on Founders Square sell for $150,000 to $200,000. People sink another $100,000 or more into tearing down and fixing up the structures..."

Say what you will about Rednecks, I sure can't afford that kind of money for a place I'd use one week a year.

I've not been there during the busy season but just driving through after a trip to the nearby casinos.......yeah, there's two of them in podunk Philadephia, MS ohhh, and a golf course.

It's like condo meets Willy Wonka, the colors and jumble of buildings is something to see.

Mini-Redneck Riveara's are all over the place.

Where I grew up it was a converted gravel pit.

Apparently by putting sand and detritus around the fallow cess-pool it becomes a recreational hot-spot.

The upside was an underage kid could go make sweet love on its banks. The downside is everyone was losing their virginity on the mosquito infested fetid banks OF A FREAKING GRAVEL PIT.

As silly as it sounds, a lot of the old gravel pits in my area got bought up for subdivisions. When they stopped the pumps, the pits filled up and became lakes, people paid big money to get houses there.

You are unfamiliar with a planet where people hang out, talk, and drink various beverages?

This place sounds like a good time.

That doesn't sound silly in the least. Who has time to think about cancer and water quality degredation when they're waterskiing in a 30-foot concentric cicle?

Golf course? there was a golf course?? Neshoba County is an interesting place to be sure. Home of 'Mississippi Burning', and still trying to live it down after all these decades.

It can be pretty, but there isn't a whole lot to see. I never went to the Res (casinos), but I lived there for about four months do do reconstruction work in the region after Katrina. Saw a lot of things I wouldn't mind seeing again, if only because it's so unique; there are few places in America with as well-preserved an antiques base as North Central MS.

God only knows why the hell they have the damned fair there in the dead-heat of frakking summer. It was a hot hell in autumn, so I can't imagine it now. Lots of automobile graveyards, and lots of abandoned Coke machines if you know where to look :)

Place looks like money up and left the place a loooong time ago, and I'm sure that had nothing to do with the Mal*Wart or casinos. Not that the Choctaw are exactly wealthy yet. If you had a lot of money and wanted to hide, Neshoba County would surely be the perfect place to do it. Lots of great places to hide bodies around Philadelphia as well.

Oh, and as far as I can tell, the local sport of choice among the young was "toilet papering". Seriously, TP must be cheap there, because the kids use it liberally on everything they can roll. Kinda funny in a sad way.

Florida's got some great folk music festivals that have been going on for many years. Very rustic "old Florida," and very cool. The one in White Springs is great, as is the Gamble Rogers festival in St Augustine.

As a 4-year resident of Panama City Beach, FL, I have to admit, this is certainly Florida's "Redneck Riviera."

That being said, it sure beats the hell out of Miami or anything the state of Alabama has to offer.

In a discussion about said Riviera, some friends and I commented upon the vast differences that can be found a mere 42 miles from one another: Destin is filled with affluent, well-dressed, family oriented people.

About an hour east, all jean-short hell breaks loose.

THIS. I can remember when the Pensacola Symphony came to town a couple years ago. The local Chamber of Commerce really pushed it as a sign that the area was beginning to shed it "Redneck" roots. I went, just to get a taste of some class that I had been missing since I moved here. Sadly, I sat next to a local resident who decided it would be ok to show up in a t-shirt and red, sweatpant cut-offs.

If you're not military or addicted to meth, it's hard to fit in around here.

Myrtle Beach doesn't have a beach per se, just a place where the land stops and the water starts.

You have apparently not been informed of the esteemed Wausau Funday and Possum Festival, a 40-year-old tradition. It is being held this weekend. Better hurry or you'll miss it. I'll be there, and will save you a seat near the stage for the possum auction.

Yeah, it's called The Mississippi River.... they didn't know it was there because the electric companies gave them power just last week.

Thank you! I'll be here all week!

They have nothing on the Grange Fair Link (new window)

Families and friends flock to this thing every August, live in tents with furniture, real furniture brought from home. Some families have been attending for generations, occupying the same space. It's kind of strange to walk down a 'street' and see people sitting in their tents with couches, lazy boys, dining tables and all manner of household stuff. It has been going on for over a 130 years, and if any of you Farkers are in the area during that time, it's worth it to stop and look around. Be warned, there is some religious stuff going on, but the emphasis of the Grange Fair is on livestock and farming. I enjoy looking at the antique tractors and watching tractor pulls, and love watching when they give out the prizes to the farm kids for their goats, chickens etc.
