Weaver95: why is this any sort of issue?

I'm pretty sure that the admins are simply green lighting at random today. Perhaps it's a social experiment or something.

2009-07-31 03:10:36 PM
He estimated he has close to 20, including pistols, shotguns, rifles and machine guns.

20?

Bwahahahahah!

/no machine guns.
//got to fire a Tommy and a Swiss sub last weekend.
///fun stuff

I thought the ATF is a lot less likely to issue a "kitchen table" FFL these days. I'd heard they want a storefront.

I personally don't care where the 4473 is filled out, and neither should this municipality. But code enforcement agencies can be a fickle lot.

So what?

2009-07-31 04:43:44 PM
DeSteph added a 17-by-10 foot concrete vault to the home to store firearms.

Oooh, I'd really like one of those too. Perhaps then I could get all of mine out onto racks so I could have a really good idea of what I have.

DeSteph wasn't sure how many guns he owns.

"Honestly, I'd have to count," he said.

He estimated he has close to 20....

Bwahahahaha - 20?

I've got friends who've got more safes than that (never married rich farker).

I've got more rifles than that in each of three different calibers (7.62x39, 7.62x54 & 8mm), close to that in .22s & I honestly don't know how many total there are (I haven't had them all out in a while, or counted all the bolts that are kept in the safe). When you buy them in multiples of three (3 kids to pass along to eventually) they do tend to accumulate quickly.

/20 *snort - probably the funniest thing I'll hear all weekend

2009-07-31 04:49:56 PM
Only 20?

2009-07-31 05:24:21 PM
OK.......and?

This.

As others before me have said...

And this is any sort of issue why?

JesseL's guideline for determining the minimally acceptable (there is no such thing as enough) number of firearms in a gun nut's collection:

The number of guns must be greater-than-or-equal-to your age in years, with a ten year grace period:
1. from the time when you become legally eligible to start purchasing them or,
2. from the time when a legally eligible non-gun owner purchases their first gun.

2009-07-31 05:39:40 PM
If you can sell Amway or Tupperware from your home then you should be able to sell guns from your home as long as you comply with other legal requirements.

AnthraxRipple: I thought the ATF is a lot less likely to issue a "kitchen table" FFL these days. I'd heard they want a storefront.

I briefly looked into getting an FFL1 once. The premises requirements virtually require a storefront, but with some remodeling you can get a house to meet those requirements. It's just a pain in the ass.

2009-07-31 05:44:28 PM
I sell guns from the back of my van. I encourage gun safety, especially to the children who buy them. I don't see any problems.

Am I supposed to be outraged? I don't get it.

Yeah? Good for him.

CrankMyBlueSax: Am I supposed to be outraged? I don't get it.

You haven't been paying attention. This guy wants to sell GUNS. From inside his HOUSE. And he's ELECTED. We can't have this kind of shenanigans to continue in Real AmericaTM

2009-07-31 05:54:31 PM
This wouldn't be an issue if stupid politicians would stop using gun control to garner votes from frightened, gutless Liberals. Police can't be everywhere all the time and anyone who thinks that needs a swift kick of reality. When seconds count, the cops are minutes away.

We need more FFL's in this country regardless of whether they're in a storefront, house or at the local 7-11 ! We'll eventually end up like the Brits where defending your home and property will land you in jail and the crooks go free !

2009-07-31 05:55:11 PM
Guns are made of compressed murder and the screams of innocent dying children!

2009-07-31 05:56:12 PM
How many farkers have some sort of FFL?

/Type 03 C&R

2009-07-31 05:57:59 PM
JesseL: C&R

I requested the paperwork for a C&R but never got it. I'll try again sometime soon, after I moved my new mailman now delivers my mail instead of throwing it away.

Even when everything goes right it can take several months just for BATF to mail out the forms.

When you try again, order multiples in case for when you screw up the first one.

What, no hero tag?

//at least he's not selling them to the contras, i guess..

2009-07-31 06:12:06 PM
A city councilman worth his salt should be able to rezone his house for commercial use, buy display cases and a cash register, slap down a parking lot and be in business.

/doing it Amway style is just lame

2009-07-31 06:13:33 PM
I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.

I can see reasonable reasons to either allow or deny this depending on the specific kind of gun dealer this guy wants to be. If he wants to be a wholesaler type, selling low-mid range stuff, cheap Raven .38s and crap like that, IE stuff he would need a large inventory on hand that seems to me like maybe a stupid business to run out of ones home. If he want to be a specialist dealer, high end firearms, collectors pieces, form plus function stuff(thinking fowling pieces ect here) that would probably be a more reasonable kind of business to run out of ones home.

2009-07-31 06:16:33 PM
I want to open up a gun store that looks like a giant rusty panel van, specializing in politically incorrect guns.

Maybe a nicer, more conventional one called "The Weapons Shop of Isher" too.

Noticeably F.A.T.: :(

Slacker huh? Be glad there are no penalties.

Keep in mind, it is also permissible to bulk out your collection with cheap guns (milsurp preferred, but HiPoint level stuff acceptable), until you can afford to upgrade them.

Some will argue that it's better just to save and have a few really nice pieces, but where's the instant gratification in that?

The article says that he owns and plans to sell a lot of pre-86 machine guns. This would put him in the high end category, not the $5 saturday night special category.

Eh, then I can see why he wouldn't want to rent out commercial space for it then, but would he really need a 'gun shop' for that? Considering the prices most of those weapons go for these days hes goona be lucky to sell more than 1-2 pieces a year, if that. Assuming he wants a FFL license so that he can handle the paperwork instead of having to go through a third party, it doesn't really strike me as a matter of needing commercial zoning, you ain't getting walk-in business for weapons that are going to cost upwards of 10 grand a piece.

The way I understand it, it's not up to the ATF. If you
meet all the requirements and pay the fees, they have to
give you the dealer license.

What the ATF does, is after you go through all the hassle
and pay the fees for a dealer license, they contact the city
government where you live and pressure the city into using
zoning ordnances to deny you a home business permit.

ATF Agent: "So you say the city denied the home business
permit? What a shame. Of course, you do know that all
the fees you paid to the ATF are non-refundable..."

1. Why is this news?
2. Why is this Fark?
3. Where is baka-san? His gun collection would make this guy curl up and cry like a little girl with envy and shame for being such a poser.

Even cheap guns cost money. Money that I don't have.

Some will argue that it's better just to save and have a few really nice pieces, but where's the instant gratification in that?

I'll argue for that. I'll take a few nice guns that I enjoy having and shooting over a dozen junkers any day of the week. I don't have a lot of guns (no more that a dozen and a half at the moment), but the ones I have I really like.

2009-07-31 08:09:48 PM
Hey, can you blame a guy for proactively trying to control the population at the community level?

That's what I did, and it kept me in plenty of guns for nothing. The only thing is you have to watch out and be as cheap as possible

I must have overlooked something, like where he went on a bloody rampage, sold M-16s to children, shot puppies in front of a kindergarten class, etc. If not, why is this news?

That's funny. I buy exactly one gun per year, no more, no less. I've done so since my first purchase in 2005. I think I'm about to break my 1 per year rule...

Twenty-some years ago, here in Des Moines, we had a long time city councilman who sold guns out of his house.

RIP, Russ Lavine.
