(Some Guy)   Teacher hears rumors that she and some student she'd never even seen before had sex. "Howell said she went to the police station to take a polygraph test, but instead was arrested, and within days she was suspended and fired."   (wlwt.com) divider line 310

libel. And it's not libel, it's slander. Spoken or casual communications are slander, journalism or official stuff is libel.

My guess of what happened: she's a new teacher, kind of cute to high school boy standards. Football players playing FKM in the locker room, one dipwad, scared of being a virgin pariah, said he nailed her. Which in turn spread through the locker halls. She got caught up in it and got burned. Since she's now suing the student, the lawyers will make a plea deal for him to fess up, leaving the school shiatting fist imprinted poop for a year.

This

I teach high school. Every one of our young female teachers has been hit on by students. One even slipped a note into the pocket of a teacher's sweater when she was helping another student. The note had his cell phone number and asked if she wanted to go out sometime. Others have had male students show up at their front door. It gets more and more weird every year.

It is a tough environment these days for young, attractive female teachers. Don't envy them a bit.

I was a junior high school student in the 70's (yes, I'm farking old). There was a teacher in our school who was notorious for initiating inappropriate behavior with girls in his class. Older girls would tell us younger ones to avoid him.

The school administration knew all about it. They did nothing.

Yes, he tried it with me, and yes, I smacked him in the face.

The Dayton school administrators acted stupidly.

Sadly, they acted in a manner that has come to be expected with this sort of thing.

Happily, there are many strip clubs in the Dayton area which would hire this ex teacher at the drop of a hat, so to speak.

When taught high school, I had students who would find my unlisted number, call me at home, show up at my house, show up outside of the movie theatre that I liked to go to, stand next to my car and wait for me, send me greeting cards and one even called my parents' house (which was listed) to try to get in touch with me. NONE of them had legit reasons. It's creepy, and there's NOTHING that an individual teacher can do about it. The institutions live in fear of parents and parents live in fear of children (whether it's physical fear or the fear that if they actually try to be parents, their kids won't love them). All of that leads to a perfect shiatstorm where children are running schools.

If the police ask you to come in concerning some vague reason - don't go. They're fishing for something to hang you with. I went with the intent of helping out a "case" and ended up being grilled for over an hour by two detectives trying to make me confess to something I didn't do.

They use double edged questions that regardless of your answer, you implicate yourself. Like "If you took the cheeseburger would you have eaten it or put it in the fridge?" - the correct answer is "I didn't take the cheeseburger." Anything else admits that you took it.

If you are a teacher, you are GUILTY until proven innocent. Seen it happen too many times. Student cheats, gets caught then accuses teacher of racism, sexual harassement, etc... Teacher suspended or loses job regardless of true or not. Administration is so scared of getting sued by students. A lot of stupid decisions are made.

I've always been afraid of this happening. It really affects how you deal with the students in your class and how you maintain discipline for fear of petty retribution. You can't ever be alone with them. Even with the door wide open and the halls full of people walking by in plain sight can be misconstrued and become fodder for rumors. You can't ever pat them on the back or the shoulder. You have to be afraid of even shaking hands with them. God forbid you have any contact with a student outside of school for any reason.

i work as a tutor for younger kids, and things aren't that strict for us; we're allowed to shake hands. our training session included a talk on "no hugs" because apparently it freaks some parents out. even our bosses acknowledge that there's something sad about having to dodge a hug from a 6 year old, but you have to do everything possible to avoid a lawsuit.

The shiatty thing about public schools (well one of the shiatty things) is that even if it is well established that a child has made 21078470823078408 false accusations, the 21078470823078409th time will still end the same: the teacher can never work again.

I'm a kneejerk supporter of the police.
That said, police ought to get a black mark from the DA or superiors every time they press charges on a case without reasonable evidence. Similar penalties should be imposed on DA's who systematically fail in their duty to protect the public, which includes the wrongly accused. Serious cases should result in job loss. The Gates case was not a serious case.

My extensive experience watching Law and Order tells me that they're not admissible in court, but they are often used by investigators as a means of eliminating suspects.

Deadhouseplants: School administrative officials have always been known to overreact to anything of everything. Which is why a lot of school budgets are secretly drained and out of funds. You never hear about it, because of NDA settlements. If the D.A. can't prove her to be guilty, which it sounds like they can't, you might as well tell the parents to get use to 40 student class sizes.

My guess of what happened: she's a new teacher, kind of cute to high school boy standards. Witch hunt being used as a way for any half assed cop, politician, DA, or community group to get their names out there for personal gain, by using the "think of the children" card.

Now let me get this straight.
In Rhode Island, it's legal for 16 year olds to work as strippers.
It's legal for them to rip off their tops, and shake their tits in your face, yet if you have a picture of one on your hard drive, you go to prison for 12 years?

Which is just stupid. A polygraph is nothing more than a way to intimidate people during interrogations. They also have a high false positive rate. So basically, I can't see how it would EVER be to your benefit to voluntarily submit to one.

So this kid filed a false police report? Man, thats taking it pretty far if it isnt true. It just seems odd that a 16-year old kid would take a rumor that far. There must be something else to the story.

Regardless of what she did, the "there's no evidence" statement isnt exactly compelling. Sounds sort of like the "go ahead...test me!" response of all the 'roid users.

Did you go to school in St. Albans, WV by chance? Exactly the same thing in my jr high although there was also a vice-principal doing the same thing as a science teacher. The science teacher ended up marrying a student (29 yr age dif) after they had a kid when she was 16 and the vice principal got convicted 25 yrs later of abuse. Messed up situation, I can imagine the conversations in the teachers lounge.

steelpeg: While I understand your attempt at sensibility, what about those who did pass judgment - like the school who fired her?? I think that's what Weaver was talking about, and that's what I took most out of the article.

From that perspective, I agree. Unless there was some overwhelming evidence of her guilt, the school jumped the gun.

That's not what I got from the comments though. It appeared that everyone decided the accusation was unwarranted just based on her word.

I wonder though, where are the Farkers that always call for a cop's blood based on mere accusation? I guess hot teachers get the benefit of the doubt.

Perhaps you live and/or in a community where parents do their jobs.

I was not so lucky. When I called a parent to tell them that their child called me a biatch, 6 out of 10 times, the parents' response was to ask me what I did.

orbitalfreak: I have an uncle that was bit in the ass by a similar circumstance. He's an idiot, and meant no harm, but talked with a "14 year old girl" who wanted to be a model, and his computer crashed. He was then arrested for "soliciting sex from a minor" after he "planned to meet up with her," although no such words or even ideas were said.

Yeah, the computer "crashed". Yep. Uh huh.

That is the single most honest, potentially disturbing post I've ever read on Fark.

You need to relax, and date women you don't have to beg. Remember, as Kenny Rogers once said, "There's someone for everyone." Kenny was talking about Becky and Tommy AKA Yellow. When you find your Becky, you can become Tommy.

Teachers have to be farking careful...and that is not even enough when a student wants to screw you over.

With the lousy pay, the snowflakes, the helicopter parents, the BS , this stuff... there are a lot of good people not going into teaching who otherwise might.
