krupintupple: oh, i heard this one last weekend, at my dad's place. you should probably get ready to LOL out loud!
Algore = Igor.
Rushbaugh had some old clips back in the day where clinton would rattle off something, and then they'd have "Algore" act like igor.
/dad was tittering like a drunken schoolgirl when he told me this, i explained that while it was almost a decade old, and maybe the original skit was funny, but otherwise it's not really ha ha funny.

Wow, so that's it. Thanks for the info.

DarkLancelot: Wouldn't we hear more about all this undigested meat from coroners if it were true? I've looked it up and there doesn't seem to be any proof to it.

From Elvis Presley's autopsy:

The colon is approximately five to seven feet in length in a person Elvis's size and should have been about two inches in diameter ... however, Elvis's colon was at least three and a half inches in diameter in some places and as large as four and half to five inches in diameter in others ... [T]he megacolon was jam-packed from the base of the descending colon all the way up and halfway across the transverse colon. It was filled with white, chalklike fecal material.

So yeah, you CAN have impacted fecal material clogging you up, but only if you take lots of drugs and eat peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches daily.

Reading the article, I don't think that anyone is advocating 'junk science'. Anyone who takes the word of some blogger over their doctor is an idiot anyways. But for a lot of people, a good cleanse can improve overall well-being. I did one about a month and a half ago, and it definitely brought up my energy levels and had me feeling about as clean and clear as I have in years. The problem, of course, is that most people go right back to their old ways and end up right where they started. Gotta get away from the processed crap and all the meat, eat organic when you can. You'll live longer.

First time I noticed people doing that was years ago on anti-Scientology sites where L. Ron Hubbard was often referred to as "Elron." I didn't get it then and I don't get it now. Elron sounds the name of a bad science fiction writer's galactic overlord, I guess, but if that's why, it's still farking stupid.

The people who write "Algore" don't even know why they do it, which makes it the sign of a thoroughly stupid person.

Maybe *you* will. Blanket statements about dietary needs don't take genetic history into account. If I did as you demanded, I'd likely die of starvation.

I'm get-offa-mah-lawn-aged, 6'0", 140 lbs, and eat a diet that makes "Super-Size Me" look healthy -- almost all fatty meats and carbohydrates.

My cholesterol is fine. A colonoscopy a few years ago (investigating a loss of appetite) showed fresh pink tissue all the way up. (It also showed that I was born without an appendix, but that's another tale of genetic superiority....)

It's likely because my family spent over 350 years in Appalachia as subsistence farmers, cooking nearly everything in fat from the animals they raised themselves.

Science has shown that among the Amish, likely due to their lifestyle, there is a gene that leads to more effective fat processing. They've also shown low incidence of heart disease in cultures that survive with fat as a primary food (like Eskimo cultures).

Our dietary needs are as diverse as our cultures and the foods they found. It only takes a few hundred years to bring the genes out.

Not long ago, I was at a spa reading over some stuff on colonic cleansing. The brochure made the point that we take in so many pounds of food per day, but only eliminate a lesser amount -- so the excess has to be stuck inside, right? I turned to the people around me and said "and that's why we all gain a pound every day and now weigh over 2,000 pounds." Blank stares. But I think it would have gone over well as a Fark headline.

I think you greatly overestimate how many calories you burn jogging a mile. You get that many calories eating a spoonful of frosting or so. And my point wasn't about the sheer number of calories - it's the highly processed nature of foods, the preservatives and chemicals that make them bad. That, and the high cholesterol and carbohydrate content associated with the things that taste really good because they were supposed to be rarities...Take potatoes, for example, those were things that you would eat one of in a great while, made for building up bulk whenever fresh greens were scarce and meat was hard to find, are now in almost every effing dish we eat.

I believe it's supposed to be pronounced similar to Igor. As I understand it, it was started by Limbaugh back when Clinton was in office. The implication was that Clinton was Dr Frankenstein and Gore was his assistant.

It was a lame joke then and it's a lame joke now.

I agree with your assessment. Cake frosting is a great food to take with you if you're hiking the Appalachian Trail or The Rockies (you need supplements to avoid scurvy of course) because you're burning 5000 calories a day or more.

I'm just saying that generally speaking people are too concerned with 'processed foods' and 'persevatives' over basic exercise considering our evolutionary stock.

Totally agree. A lardass eating a tub of 'organic' ice cream every day isn't doing themselves any favors. It's not good for you, just comparatively less bad, if that makes sense. Still gotta stick with the low fat food groups and exercise is definitely important. I'm on a kick right now trying to run at least 100 miles a month, it's great to be that active. But it would be pointless if I kept eating hamburgers, fries, and wings every night while guzzling 300 calorie dark beers.

Thanks for the advice. My husband went through it a couple of weeks ago (the joys of turning 50 together) so at least I have some clue. DarnoKonrad: Greenspan, Paulson, and Bernanke have all weighed in. Hands off didn't work out so hot.

And then they put their hands in just as all of those failures of businesses were about to fail and said, "We'll try to save you unimaginative failures because we need your failure!! We might even make some money!!"

Just when the market was going to correct itself, the government stepped in and said that the market failed to protect everyone from getting hurt, except people get hurt anyway, we won't likely make any money, and if we do, it's not the government's job to try and fix it anyway (in my opinion).

Guess what, if we made it a habit of giving convicted felons money, a pat on the back, a stern "Don't do that again, OK?", and told them we'd garnish their wages until they'd pay us back, do you think they would go back to being productive members of society? Or do you think they'd run away with their money in-hand? I know what I'd do...

Anyway, the point is that my belief is that the government is here to make sure that people uphold their ends of contracts. Regulations exist to make sure that they are doing what they can do have the ability to fulfill their contracts (ie must keep a certain amount of reserves for banks or insurance). I think that this approach is a much better way to start.

We can't stop all felons from committing crimes (in fact, by definition we can't stop any), but we can actually punish them after they do.

As someone who has experienced an undrugged colonoscopy, I saw the squeeky clean inside of my colon and lost a pound at most after the nuclear laxative and double enema prep. This 10lb business is complete horseshiat promoted by people who just get off on enemas. (NTTAWWT) I would also point out that I eat a very meat heavy diet. Speaking of colons, my cousin kept having these terrible stomach cramps. After a few doctors and tests, she decided to go to a natural healer, who proceeded to tell her that she was allergic to meat. So she went vegetarian, which worked for awhile because of the placebo, but then her pain came back. Finally she went to another doctor who suggested that maybe she had a slow digestive tract and that drinking laxatives everyday would help. She hasn't had pain since.

Also, the phrase anti-science is very vague. I prefer the term anti-empiricism.

It doesn't help that the whole Woo Movement is just another extension of anti-intellectualism disguised with an unhealthy dose of anti-corporatism. They can scream Big Pharma all they want, but their methods of misusing the word 'organic' and demonizing 'frankenfood' is almost the same as demonizing 'liberal' and 'the Left.' A case could be made here for the whole extremists being of both sides, but let's keep in mind that anti-intellectualism is a main Right Wing cause and the Woo Movement, at its heart, believes in misinformation so much that it's hard to call it liberal, progressive, or anything near the true extreme left-wing.
