I'll take winning ugly. Hell, if I could manage to get permission to sing the national anthem at Busch Stadium or wherever and weave a curse in there that says 'you don't win a World Series until we do', I'd do it in a heartbeat. That'd be a fun one to inflict.

Diehard Cards fan here, and I couldn't believe the 2006 season either. When Wainwright threw that final strike against the Tigers, I was like "Well, the Cards won the World Series but man, this feels flat."

As a Mets fan, I'm still bitter. I felt like 2006 was our year and while I know a lot of Mets fans disagree, losing that year actually bothers me more than the collapses of the past 2 years or the injury-ravaged clusterfark this year has been. Yeah, anything can happen in the playoffs, but still.

But good for the Cubs. That division is real interesting.

Except it took the Cubs playing shiat teams to make it to first while the Cards played the Phillies. Sure if you want to feel special go ahead. You beat up shiat teams and got first place whatever goes you the happy feeling that you've finally got first place.

Deadhouseplants: Kevin Gregg was traded/sent down to Iowa/died? No? Um, you might want to hold off on hope there Obama.

Except Kevin Gregg has been decent since his god-awful April. Since then, he's blown 3 saves (2 officially) and has a 2.92 ERA and 2 of 10 inherited runner scored. He's not great but he's adequate.

It's just that blowing a four-run lead once is more memorable than a scoreless frame, so retarded Cubs fans and haters end up thinking he's another Antonio Alfonseca.

Obviously she wasn't watching the same Brewer team I have. I mean they were one of the best teams in baseball through April and most of May but most of the last two months have been extremely painful.

Thankfully the NL Central sucks so bad that we still have a chance.

The Cubs had to play Philly, too, but I've been saying the same thing. Sweeps over the Natinals and the Reds are what you are supposed to do and then play the good teams tough and you'll usually come out okay. Imo, the Cards are still the team to beat in the Central with acquiring DeRosa and Holliday...not to mention He-Who-Is-Not-Human.

If you want to break down the post-AS break schedules so far:

Both played at Philly.

The Cards played the Astros, the Cubs played the Reds, practically a wash. (Not that the standings agree, since the Cardinals were swept by the Astros and the Cubs swept the Reds, but the teams are about the same.)

Cards played one at Washington and three against Arizona. The Cubs played four at Washington.

So your point is that the Cubs played three against the Nationals while the Cards had to play the powerhouse Diamondbacks?

Cubs have played five fewer games than the Cardinals, and are in first by half a game. They are the worst first place team in baseball at the moment. But hey, go ahead and celebrate. I suppose you've earned it with a century of sucking.

As a Cubs fan, I am pleased with this relatively new trend of breaking my heart in September or October, instead of folding like a card table in June and July. It's much more exciting this way.

The worst first place team gets a seat at the playoff table. The second-best second place team, though they may have a better record, is cryin' on the outside.

I dunno, I'd rather have a seat at the table. Wouldn't you?

Except the Cards were playing Philly when the cubs were playing the Nats. Yes you can say that the Reds and Astros are teams that are alike, but the Astros still have something that resembles an offense. The Astros have put up just as many runs as the Cubs have. The team that's comparable to the Astros is the Cubs except the Cubs have a slight edge in the starting staff. Both their bullpens suck a big fat one.

God, the Cards need to do something about Wellemeyer. He's been absolutely terrible for a while now. I watched the game today and the announcers were saying stuff like "at least he's not walking anybody" to try to say something nice. Yeah, no walks is good, but 450 feet to Ryan Howard is bad enough to make up for it.

Holliday and DeRosa are nice, but the Cards still needs some freaking pitching. I just don't see 'em getting it though, unless it's some sort of scrap heap deal after the trade deadline or something. That's worked in the past (Piniero, Weaver, Woody Williams, etc) but they've got to do something to get Wellemeyer out of that rotation. And the answer ain't anybody in Memphis.

On the Cubs side, I have faith that they'll fall flat. They always do. They're still a pretty beat up team and they don't have a lot of off days the rest of the year (2 in August, 2 in September). The team that I'd expect to really turn it up is Houston, which has historically been a second half team. They've already moved up into striking distance for the division, and if Berkman can get and stay healthy down there, they're very dangerous.

I think the Cubs are going to be fine, even if they don't pull off a move. The pitching is a lot better than people think. It's another bat that they'll be targeting this week. I think they will go to the Blue Jays, not for Halladay, but for Marco Scutaro. If they can swing it to get Halladay too, that would be an incredible bonus, but they really don't need him that badly, and the reason they would get him is to prevent him from going to the Dodgers or the Phillies or the Brewers...

The Cubs were playing the Reds actually. Not that it matters.

The Cubs played the Phillies while the Cards played the Astros. The Cardinals could have added two games to their lead and this thread wouldn't exist yet. Instead, they got swept.
