This is good news ... for Newark.

2009-07-23 02:21:55 PM
TFA: ....employees at some big agencies, like the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are being encouraged to host meetings in more buttoned-down places such as St. Louis, Milwaukee or Denver.

Slam!!!

/Of course, my hometown isn't exactly the Mecca of fun...

Fun is where you make it.

UberDave: the Mecca of fun...

Ironically enough, I don't think I could imagine a place less fun.

Ha ha! St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Denver Farkers, your city just called out by the gubment as being boring!

/St. Louis easily the most boring of those three

2009-07-23 03:29:12 PM
I think they are kind of missing the point here. The point isn't that they are going to "fun" cities, it's the fact that they don't need to go at all.

So your job at social security is stressful, so is mine. Do you know when I can expect a company trip to relieve that stress? Maybe not when hell freezes over, but I bet that would show up on the calendar for the month. I would get laughed at if I suggested it now.

Mesa, Arizona could start marketing itself to government agencies as topping the Forbes Most Boring Cities list.

I've never had any fun in Vegas, myself.

/never been

Dancin_In_Anson: Fun is where you make it.

You just need to take along one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings.

So, Detroit is going to be expecting more conventions?

Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

What happens in Altoona...well, nothing really happens in Altoona.

2009-07-23 05:29:59 PM
Yes, Denver is boring. Nothing to do here. The weather is awful. The population is overflowing. The Rocky Mountains aren't scenic or nearby. If you have to move, try St. Louis/Milwaukeee/etc. instead.

/Lives in Denver.

I'd have to agree St. Louis is absolutely no fun. However, if you read further down Chicago is listed as a no-fun city so, I'll just shut up.

2009-07-23 05:31:27 PM
I heard Glenn Beck railing about this because apparently in his world the public sector is 60% of the economy, (it's actually less than 1%) and thus, the evil government was going to cripple the tourism industry in these cities.

I can't believe anyone takes this man seriously.

This is the 21st century. Why the hell do the need to go anywhere? Try some technology fellas.

Great. Hurt the cities whose economies are based on tourism and conventions, like New Orleans. Obama hates black people.

2009-07-23 05:33:49 PM
You forgot the 5 feet of snow in downtown Denver, even in July.

How about Des Moines? The only nighttime entertainment is walking the tube farms.

SLC is a fun city. You just diss it because it was founded by the LDS.
/Seriously there are bars in SLC

I agree, a city like Milwaukee can be "fun"... if you love to go on brewery tours.

But, those are not all centrally located and easy to get to.

Las Vegas, Orlando, New Orleans are considered "fun" because you can get hotels in the middle of all the fun, and the fun is fairly compressed in the area and/or has excellent transportation to get you to the "fun".

2009-07-23 05:36:42 PM
SeamusFerrell: However, if you read further down Chicago is listed as a no-fun city so, I'll just shut up.

Well, that's just lunacy.

In fairness, there are far more boring cities than St. Louis. Oh, and I consider Milwaukee kind of fun, really. Except in the winter. Never again.

2009-07-23 05:37:17 PM
I'd rather go to Chicago than Vegas. At least Chicago is cool. Vegas is a lot of things, but cool is not one of them.

2009-07-23 05:37:47 PM
The irony is that "fun" cities are dirt cheap to have gatherings at and raises moral. Gee can't have that ... can we?

/going to a convention in Vegas next week - paying for it myself since the company won't cover it - total cost for 4 nights at the Wynn and round trip flight from six states away: $510

Amusement parks are fun, but they are not cool. Nothing designed for tourists is ever cool.

"Do you want to take everyone to Fargo in the middle of winter?" said the Department of Agriculture employee. "Just because they're federal employees you don't need to mistreat them."

Heh, this was on the front page of the paper today.

media.jsonline.com

Seems our paper has gained a sense of humor as of late. There were 3 joke headlines on the front page of the local section today alone.

Hell, last year during hurricane season there was one on the front page "Hurricane Ike Messes with Texas".

/seriously, has to be a farker working there...

Resort locations aren't banned, "but you have to provide robust justification" to supervisors for approval to hold an event there, the employee said.

So yeah, they're banned.

Putting that aside, what is there not to like about drinking and gambling 24 hours a day, not to mention that you can legally wager on college sports? (Much to the dismay of John McCain.)

GET OFF HIS PHONE! Facts and reason are really intrusive on his reality. But more to the point, why does he care where the public sector holds meetings? Does that have anything to do with its size?

Never mind, we ARE talking Glenn Beck here.

for a midwestern city with 1:00 bar closings, omaha's not that bad.
