It *was* pretty boring. I'm used to black people on my TV running really fast or dancing a little jig. Maybe an old timey negro spiritual song.

There were some funny parts, particularly near the end.

This. His crack about the doctor following him around 24-7 made me laugh.

It's like he has two settings.

MLK in front of the Lincoln memorial

or

Bob from accounting talking about last month's TPS report.

FTA: Elsewhere, just days after he was released from prison, Michael Vick said he had nothing to do with the death of the Taco Bell Chihuahua.

What did Michael Vick ever do to deserve this type of.... Oh, that. Yeah.

I thought it was funny when he was using an example for Lynn Sweet's question about Dr. Gates. "If I were seen jimmying the door of my house...oh wait--I live here now. If I tried that here, I'd probably get shot."

Jon Stewart did this joke a few days ago already, Andy. It wasn't all that good when he did it, and you just sound like a moron ripping it off.

Well, they can't all be winners. And health care is boring topic to begin with.

So did I understand correctly that the third questioner from the end just stood up and tried to take the other guy's opening? On the one hand it's pretty shiatty. On the other hand, if Obama knew what question Lynn Sweet was packing, he probably would have taken a bit longer in his answer to the usurper.

"Well, sorry Lynn. All out of time."

Yeah that was the second funny comment that I was blanking on, I give him a +1 on that.

Knew it.

Watched Obama make perfect sense, and say a bunch of accurate and truthful things.

Knew the response would be "Too Boring! Where are the flashing lights!"

...at least that's what I heard.

BTW, I thought it was amazing how he managed to give long, detailed answers to press questions while reading from a teleprompter. I guess his speechwriter must have had the questions in advance.

It's a press conference on Health Care... exactly what were people expecting? Chris Rock?

I'm a supporter of a politician giving us nitty-gritty details about his policy, but I don't think that's Obama's best use of his own persona in this case. People seem to like him best when he's inspiring and putting a human touch on abstract issues rather than when he's explaining them in detail. I'd like to see him inject some more emotion into his appearances to graphically make the case that the status quo is unacceptable. There are certainly enough horror stories to go around in healthcare, and he could simply highlight some of the more egregious instances of insurance companies screwing people over.

Obama needs to remember that his behind the scenes job (helping put together a policy reform) is very different from his public job (selling the public on why the reform is necessary).

Because it's hard to predict incoming questions for these things? I assume the writer owns a TV, that's more than enough to provide notes enough on any likely question for Obama to fill in with no real problems.

And, yeah, press conferences are typically at least 4/5 scripted.

God forbid Obama chooses his words carefully when he's facing off against a gaggle of retards who repeat the same, often-discredited talking points over and over again.

Remember, we're going to die in the lines waiting for medical care, the same way thousands every year starve to death waiting to get their licenses renewed.

600 more points and he'll have recovered back to where it was when he took the job.

Not being snarky, its what my friend and i figure he'll have to get at to reasonably claim the economy has recovered to some degree, sicne unemployment lags like crazy.

The Dow closed at ~7949 on January 20th. It's currently at ~9,060. What 600 points? Or are you saying Obama is responsible for stock market declined that happened before he was actually in office? To a degree, that's true, if the market was pricing his election in earlier. But I think it's pretty obvious to anyone with a brain that Obama was not the cause of the declines in the stock market last fall.

Ah, thats right. I think we'd determined it'd be a stronger statement if it was based off of when he was elected, not sworn in, since there was a steep sell-off right after his election.

Not saying its his fault, but people can easily see it that way, y'know? I'm not disparaging the man, i'm a big fan. It will jsut be a much easier push to say "i got this back to where it was the day I was elected." I dunno.

winterwhile: to the news that the Farked up plan will not go anywhere?

It's going to happen, so get used to it. Obama and the Democrats have too much riding on this to not pass anything, and they do have a much stronger position than the Republicans (who, according to polls, have a massive credibility gap with the public when compared to Obama on who people trust to reform healthcare). The only question is how far it goes in the details, and how much of the reforms the corporate lobbyists can stop in Congress.

2009-07-23 01:17:48 PM
can we start blaming Obama for a 2464.44 rise in the Dow since March 5th yet

I thought it was good too. Except that just yesterday (or the day before?), Farkers were bemoaning this very point. You would also think that, being in the press, the questioner would know this little fact. Is there another issue I am missing?

We should start blaming him for the sharp dropoff in the growth of jobless claims, too.

/ "why do you hate growth, Barack Obama?"

He can just say "the stock market is xxxx points higher than when I entered office", and no one who that statement is aimed at will know or care about the details.

I follow the stock market closely, and even I don't care very much about the Dow. It's not really that useful an indicator of the economy as a whole these days, mainly because it's too small and focused solely on huge companies.

And I just don't buy that people will blame Obama for the stock market declines that happened before he took office. It's obvious to most people that that was caused by the greedy bankers on Wall Street and the real estate crisis, not Obama.
