NewportBarGuy: Are we back to using the DJIA as an economic indicator again? Oh goody, I thought we might have actually learned something from doing that before. Thank god.

Best face palm pic ever.

Senescent Dawn: I may one day find happiness when people stop talking about the DOW as if it were:

A) A barometer of the entire country's economic health
B) A verdict on the economic policies of the current administration

Remember that the DOW reached its height under Bush.

14 THOUSAND points to be precise.

When it hits 11,000 (where it was last November) then get back to us.

Seriously, how is an index that only includes 30 companies, which has a bizarre weighting system that only financial analysts could love, a decent measure of the stock market's performance?

Me: Hey I found $10?
schnarff: pff, why didn't you find $20? Ten bucks is nothing

Dude, you're doing it wrong.
You should be renting hot soccer moms trying to make ends meet.

If the Dowe goes too high that all comes to and end.

Also, can you tell me where you are finding hookers without teeth?

Alacritous: Drastic erratic shifts in the DOW are not a good thing, it's up almost a thousand points in 14 days. There's gonna be some profit taking this afternoon I'll bet.

It does seem unsustainable, though I'm willing to say that they might wait until tomorrow to yank the rug out.

Bad news for me. I took small profit and shuffled to a government bond fund after realizing the market was more irrational than usual. News that Parker Brothers (Scrabble boards) beating expections should not move the market.

It's the European, socialized version of the Dow, and the fact that it's getting stronger under Obama's watch is why it's such bad news for him.

It'll come and go (maybe today, maybe in a week or 3), but the history of this recovery is that the Dow makes big jumps, people profit take, it drops down a bit. The dow was in the high 8000s and then dipped to the high 7's/low-8's and laid there oscillating for a while, now it's going to to beyond 9000, drop down to the high 8s for a while. The recovery will be jumpy, but progress on the Dow (which is a shiat indicator) is still being made.

DOW: How can I help you, young man?

Investor: I got a hundred-dollar check from my grandma and my dad said I need to put it in the bank so it can grow over the years.

DOW: Well that's fantastic. A really smart decision, young man. We can put that check in a money market mutual fund, then we'll re-invest the earnings into foreign currency accounts with compounding interest aaaand it's gone.

because the zionist banking conspiracy acting in concert with Borak "the Secret Muslin" Obama WHO WASN'T EVEN BORN IN AMERICA is trying to artifically control the media and let the illegal homosexual terrorist immigrators who smoke bongpipes into America to make America weaker and give comfort and aid to the enemy and not portect the troops in the Iraq and Afhganistan and the Middle East and take our guns and teach homsexualism in schools and make everyone get abortion forever and bankrupt the America. Also kick baby puppies right in their doggie faces.

Senescent Dawn: Remember that the DOW reached its height under Bush.

-Stock is a measure of how much people THINK a company is worth.

-As such, stock is not a measure of economic health, but a measure of perceived health.

-That's how you get Enron, which had sky-high stock (also when Bush was President), suddenly collapsing because they were, in reality, a shell company in spite of their high perceived value.

-Thus, the Dow(e) numbers during the Bush years were pretty meaningless, since the economic reality was more rocky than the Dow indicated.

Good. At this point it is reassuring to know we are in a common recession.

I was always under the belief that people thought the dow was the most important because it was the largest of the US indexes combined with the fact that people are stupid.
