(Straits Times)   Chinese mad about Command and Conquer game because it portrays China as a terrorist base. In other news, French pissed about pretty much every war simulation game made   ( divider line

Although the game is not in stores in China, pirated copies have reached its shores. Players can also download it from the Internet.

And yet, I still haven't found it on Kazaa. Damn people and their renamed files!

You should file a grievance with the Kazaa Standards and Ethics Committee, Quick1!

I think that, generally, you don't have much right to biatch about the things you have stolen.

My favorite quote:
"The image of Tiananmen Square cannot be sullied."

Because after all, the world's image of Tiananmen is just so positive.

why is this a stupid tag? Alot of dumb 15 years old gamers will take it for real unconsciously. Game is their only source of educated information.
2003-02-26 02:58:28 PM
As if that game didn't have network/multiplayer issues already, now the Chinese are going to hack the sh!t out of it. I'm staying offline.

"We will not allow foreigners to treat this as a joke!"

Um. Ok. Try and stop me. :p
2003-02-26 02:59:30 PM
In what way is this stupid? Don't you think americans would be biatching at the top of their lungs if america was portrayed in a non-flattering way?
2003-02-26 02:59:45 PM
you mean
2003-02-26 02:59:46 PM
In the game, a group of international terrorists set up base in China where they purchase tanks, planes and missiles in order to form the 'Global People's Liberation Army'.

Well, it's the last place I'd look for a liberation army...

Best title of the day! (so far)
2003-02-26 03:00:16 PM
I agree with Chiner...a video game will just ruin Tiananmen Square.

Dear Sirs:

How dare you?! I am shocked and offended. If this continues, I will be forced to discontinue stealing your products.

2003-02-26 03:00:33 PM
There's medal of Honor Underground...And the French are shown doing something substantial in WWII in that game, as well.
2003-02-26 03:00:38 PM
Oh i have the french version of that game its called "submit and surrender"
2003-02-26 03:01:57 PM
The image of Tiananmen Square cannot be sullied. We will not allow foreigners to treat this as a joke!

I smell a photoshop contest.
2003-02-26 03:01:58 PM
I would make a french role playing game, all your weapons would be differnt sizes of white flags, visible from different distances, possibly even different shades, like eggshell (sorry ouef), pastry, and bread.

Hmmmm, I think I'll go with the 4 X 6 oatmeal to ward off the Germans
2003-02-26 03:02:17 PM
Hee...they steal the game and then complain about it. That made me laugh for exactly 1.65 seconds.
2003-02-26 03:02:33 PM
You couldn't make a game like this with the French in it anyway. Unless of course you allied them with the GLA... hehehehe
2003-02-26 03:02:57 PM
With karate I'll kick your ass from here to Tiananmen Square.
Oh yeah motherfarker gonna kick your derierre oh yeah e yea ah.

2003-02-26 03:03:15 PM
Silly. C&C Generals pokes fun at the stereotypes of all 3 sides equally.
2003-02-26 03:03:36 PM
When did we stop calling them Red China? It should be Red China and Yellow France.
2003-02-26 03:03:48 PM

HAHAHAHA! Best laugh I had all morning!
2003-02-26 03:04:09 PM
Would they be happier if the game portrayed them as gigantic abusers of human rights?
2003-02-26 03:04:10 PM
Lay down your arms and run like little girls.
2003-02-26 03:05:35 PM
Alot of games poke fun at stereotypes, look at GTA for instance. Also doesn't the statue of liberty gets blown in one of the C&C series?
2003-02-26 03:05:40 PM
My friend just downloaded FreeLancer and now he is biatching cause he can't get past one mission cause he killed an important character or something and I quote "Goddamnit I can't control my ship stupid piece of shiat I'm gonna write a letter to them saying I'm glad I didn't buy your game and pirated it instead cause it doesn't even work!"

This from a man who bought his logitech keyboard cause he wanted a keyboard "with lots of buttons on it" I had to show him how to enable his function keys on it cause he had them locked out and didn't know, and couldn't get to anything that required an F key. God I hate stupid people that go around pretending they are smart.
2003-02-26 03:08:29 PM
I guess bloodstains don't count as "sullying"...?
2003-02-26 03:08:46 PM
When american landmarks blow up in movies (ID4 for example) we all cheer.
2003-02-26 03:09:13 PM
Reggae, you should have hooked all his F keys to "show desktop" or "start another Outlook Express window" .. he'd probably have shot himself within a few hours.

Having html troubles today.....

The problem with playing a game that has Chinese characters in it is that after you finish the game, an hour later you want to play the game again.
2003-02-26 03:11:02 PM
Um.. correct me if i'm wrong, but don't all of the Command and Conquer games very clearly take place in alternate universes? I haven't tried this "generals" thing, but the C&C games i have played all made it extremely clear that the political situation in their games is so totally different from reality that nothing that happens can be construed an actual statement on any existing world government.

So what are the chinese complaining about? Can anyone who has played the game tell me if this is even remotely reasonable?

As far as blowing up Tiannamen square goes, um, didn't the earlier C&C games have you destroying most of europe? So how is blowing up Tiannamen any more disrespectful to anyone? Maybe if we send them a copy of "Mars Attacks" and they can see american entertainment destroying every non-chinese landmark on earth they'll feel better.
2003-02-26 03:11:12 PM
It is an insult to China for players to be able to bomb Tiananmen Square at the press of a button.

Hate to break it to ya' Mao, but there's probably a US and a Russian nuke aimed at almost every city in your overpopulated country. Don't take it personal.

We will stand still for your American sullying tactics no longer!!

Yep. And one of the missions takes place in NY where you can blow up the WTC.
2003-02-26 03:12:35 PM
Just like someone from AnnArbor to cheer...

2003-02-26 03:13:18 PM
oh yeah..../sarcasm
2003-02-26 03:14:17 PM
Okay, I'm Chinese, and I don't even take Chinese "slurs" that seriously.

These guys need to lighten up...but having grown up with stereotypical Asians, I can say that they sure do enjoy getting worked up.

But on the flip side, when is EA Pacific going to get car bombed by the terrori---err GLA supporters?
2003-02-26 03:14:17 PM
One word:

2003-02-26 03:15:49 PM

You are correct about that. I mean the U.S. public is about as ignorant of other nations as they are rich. And to paint another country bad just because they do things differently is as ignorant as you can get.

They're not like me so they must be bad.

Plus you ever notice that first the U.S. paints a country bad then in about twenty years ends up going after them militarily (if thats a word). 50's-80's paint Russia bad using movies, 80's go after Russia, 70's-2000's paint Arabs bad using movies and video games, present day go after Arabs. But I guess it's all coincidence. Next is probably Cuba and Africa because I saw some movies and video games about killing Latinos. and Africa because of that new Bruce Willis flick.

I would like anyone out there to prove me wrong to say that what I just said never happened.

Let the unconscious programming continue courtesy of U.S. military, entertainment industry, and the education system.
2003-02-26 03:17:09 PM
It's funny you should mention Mars Attacks and films. They get like 8 films there a year (aside from the ones ripped off the internet) for official release, once they've been approved.
2003-02-26 03:22:37 PM
Quadruplator -- I don't recall boycotts of "Enemy of the State", and aside from Muslim activists, not too many people protested "The Siege" either. "Bulworth" mocked American political culture, while Michael Moore mocks everybody. Meanwhile, late-night hosts get away with lampooning politicians and celebrities for just about anything. Basically, the US is frequently OK with self-deprecation, so long as it isn't *just* to be offensive to beliefs.
2003-02-26 03:23:17 PM

You sure you haven't got that idea backwards? You seriously think that the cold war didn't start until 1980? That we never fought China in Korea? Or Cuba at the Bay of Pigs? Or nearly fought Russia during the Missile Crisis? I think the history of international relations is a little more complicated than 50 years of the U.S. government saying "Hollywood made me do it."

I wouldn't want to live in your world, but it sure would be interesting to visit for a day or two.
2003-02-26 03:23:27 PM

While I have no real opinion on your statement, it should be pointed out correlation is not proof of casuality.
