You should check out his running diary of the Grammys, which includes the following:

10:16 --You have to love the Grammys for moments like this:

-- Kevin James: "It's so great to be here tonight with my man Ja Rule!"

--Ja Rule: "Holla!"

". Like Pete Carroll, John Blutarski and -- trust me -- Dennis Erickson, Rick Pitino was meant to stay in college."

What!!?!?!?!? No Spurrier?!?!?!?!
2003-02-25 05:12:15 PM
And Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale says in unioson, "Tell me something I don't already know !"
2003-02-25 05:14:26 PM
No, Larry Bird is not walking thru that door.
2003-02-25 05:14:58 PM
At first my comment was going to be, "Who gives a fark", but that guy is a really good writer and I actually found the article interesting.
2003-02-25 05:15:20 PM
My theory: He failed with the Celtics because the team's loaded with crybabies who earn far more than they're worth. At least at the college level, the players are trying to get into the pros, and are willing to listen to someone bark orders. Once you reach the NBA, you have no bigger goal, and you get complacent.
2003-02-25 05:16:06 PM
"And Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale says in unioson,... "

"Um, waiter, could I have the spellcheck please ? Thank you."

when i was younger, i asked my grandpa about basketball, and he smiled and said "well ill show you instead" so we went down to the park and i walked on the court. and there on the free throw line were my parents having sex.

2003-02-25 05:16:32 PM
I think Boston would agree.

A five-day old link on a losing basketball coach?

I'm pretty sure two bombs ripped apart buildings in Caracas today. Oh well, it's not news its

In college basketball, the coach makes the rules. In pro basketball, the players make the rules.

I believe I knew what happened with pitino. He took the celtics and applied college methods. He made the team do pre-season practice in an army base, for God's sake. And you know, million-dollar prima-donnas don't like to be pushed around. The players shutted pitino down.

And I believe that's what pitino meant when he made that comment. He just isn't the diplomat a pro coach needs to be to be marginally successful.

NBA Sucks College B-Ball is better.

What were the Niners thinking?
2003-02-25 05:59:28 PM
Terry Meiners is a racist asshat.
2003-02-25 06:27:39 PM
Rick Pitino sucks and he stinks and he sucks.
2003-02-25 06:27:47 PM
If not racist, an idiot.
2003-02-25 06:33:10 PM
Bill Simmons is my hereo. Is this the first time one of his articles has been posted? I try and try to get TMQ and the Sports Guy on here, but to no luck.

How could the Grammy diary not make it? Comedy genius.

Amen to the Obvious Tag!
/very happy Cincinnati fan that hates Louisville more than anything... except taxes on beer

I like what Pitino did for Basketball in Kentucky. The man has a lot of energy, and likes a fast hot game. UK was forced to play a waiting game under Joe Hall. Players were afraid to shoot because he would bench anyone that missed a shot. Pitino encouraged guys to play their hearts out and have fun. It kinda sucked that UK always seemed to peak before tournament time... a lot of folks around here will turn on a coach that wins 30 games in a season but cant close on bringing home a NCAA title.
2003-02-25 07:53:04 PM
Sounds like the problems with Cincinnati and Huggins. But honestly, I think he's (Huggins) the John Cooper of basketball. Great coach, but can't win big games. The Midwest does want some immediate results now though. Puke and Maryland taking all the light away from the true basketball breeding ground.
2003-02-25 08:37:41 PM
No coach is shat upon by the boo-sters more than UCLA's coach du jour. Anything less than 10 straight NCAA titles won't cut the mustard, pal.
2003-02-25 08:38:02 PM
Matt Doherty in 3...2...1...
2003-02-25 08:45:11 PM
Damn straight. Red Auerbach made that team.

Sports Guy Archives

He interviewd Red Auerbach himself in a March '02 column.
2003-02-25 11:30:16 PM
no. he is totally a bad coach. look at the big UK losses - to duke, for example. Bad coaching. He is, however an excellent recruiter. Maybe one of the best. That can carry you very far in the college game.

what am i saying? i don't even watch sports.
2003-02-26 12:34:57 AM
Jjkarn0: Not really. Look at all the talent UNC has had over the years. They should have been NCAA champions for at least 6-8 years straight (between 76/78-84) but they only had 2 (maybe 3?). They had loads of talent, but the coach couldn't get it done.
2003-02-26 12:58:56 AM
He got hated here first:
2003-02-26 09:47:07 AM
Machtyn, you're clearly an idiot. I have no idea why you're talking about UNC suddenly instead of UK, but since you know nothing about college basketball anyway, I won't worry about it.
