The UK and to a lesser extent the US are quickly becoming East Germany. Before long we'll all be terrorists spying on each other.

Reminds me of Salem around 1692.

ScottHimself: Are you offering a different explanation, or are you under the impression that beer is the same as meth?

I know they're different. However even if legalized, I doubt people would start doing meth for the hell of it.Most people already know what it does. It's definitely not popular or looked upon as okay anywhere I know of.
Some of them are using illicit drugs, and being a criminal does not preclude one from working a job.

So would trespassing on private property with paramilitary weaponry without a warrant.

Why hasn't anyone discovered the facebook page and linked to it??!!!

Anyway, even assuming the cops were right to shut down the BBQ before it started on the risk it would be an out of control x-fueled rave, how about doing it this way:

Scene: A grassy bit with a blue awning to protect the food and such.

A police car drives up slowly, it's emergency lights and siren off.

The driver leans out the window to talk to some Bald Guy with Badass Tattoos:

Cop: "Ai, mate, come here for a minute. Sorry to do this to you, but my superintendent ordered me to come up here and shut down your rave. So you will all to move along. Sorry mate, wish I could let you have your party.

BGwBAT: It's my birthday. We're just having a party. It's only about 15 of me mates. So, fark off.

Cop: Don't bloody talk to me like that. I asked you nicely we'll call in the SWAT team if you even think about having a burger.

BGwBAT: Awright, mate. I'm going to have a beer and have my friend light the barbecue now. Go do some real work.

Cop: (on the radio): Boss? Superintendent? They say it's just a birthday party. They're going to have burgers and not cause any trouble.

Super: Bloody 'ell. Do your job or it's your ass.

Cop: How about calling in SWAT?

Super: Don't make jokes like that on the radio. People have scanners. You could get fired.

Definition of aggressive sociopaths: AGGRESSIVE SOCIOPATHS derive strong, yet nonperverse gratification from harming others. They like to hurt, frighten, tyrannize, bully, and manipulate. They do it for a sense of power and control, and will often only drop subtle hints about what they are up to. They polish their aggressive, domineering manner in such a way to disguise any intimidation others might feel. They seek out positions of power, such as parent, teacher, bureaucrat, supervisor, or police officer. Their style is one of passive aggression as they systematically go about sabotaging the ideas of others to get their ideas in place. In their spare time, they like to hunt or occasionally do sadistic things like find stray dogs and cut them up. They are usually effective at getting their way, and are especially vindictive if resisted or crossed. They don't follow the social norm of reciprocity like others do.

One is used by criminals because it's illegal. That's some very circular logic "It's bad because it's illegal, it's illegal because it's bad".
And some of the working population probably uses illicit drugs too.

Yeah, thought so.

/England

WHAT?

How does this even make sense? Cops in riot gear and a chopper raid a bbq with 15 people and you've made the leap to drug policy? Wow you're an idiot.

In fairness the Rave act and it's follow-ups (which are what allows the English police to break up these parties) was targeted at the early nineties raves, and the main goals of the legislation were preventing property damage (from breaking into warehouses) and cracking down on drugs (which in rampant use at the raves). It's not insane to see the connection if you know about the history of this sort of thing over there...

So the helicopter hovering over a grill is a good idea? Ok. Sounds like they have a hammer for every job.

/btw was breaking and entering and possession of drugs illegal prior to the rave/ bbq enforement act? just curious...

To be clear, the rave act is retarded, I'm not defending it, I was just pointing out why an Englishman might've made the leap to drugs from BBQ's.

The stated "need" for the new laws was that the parties were forming and dissolving too quickly for the police to catch the perps if they waited for the rave to happen, so the law gave them ability to break it up preemptively. That would never pass muster over here (due process and all), but they've got no Bill of Rights...

To restate, not a supporter, just an explainer

plausdeny: This is why the militarization of the police force is a bad thing. Once you've spent all that money to equip them with armored personnel carriers, anti-materiel rifles, and infantrymen (SWAT teams), they're constantly on the lookout for opportunities to use those capabilities to prove it wasn't a waste of money. This is why you see more and more SWAT raids for more and more petty crimes.

It may be necessary in a few very very rare occasions, but most of the time you can accomplish the same thing with old fashioned policework, like detaining the drug dealers as they leave to make deals and then searching the house when it is empty. It doesn't require a freaking invasion of Grenada re-enactment.

But the cops want to play Navy SEAL, how can they feel macho and badass when they cant play like they are some elite military force?

greenapple2step: The reason this happened is because people as a whole have not been acting responsibly and it has now become necessary for the police/government to step in and think for the majority of dumbas brain dead dim wits out there.

Also If you don't want to attract attention from police, don't advertise on facebook about your party!

If you are doing nothing wrong there is nothing to fear right? Dont tell anyone you know that you are having a cook out, because the cops always will come break it up.

No, it's where we bash the fact that cops are being turned into paramilitary organizations who see their citizens "as the enemy", are motivated by greed more than virtue, and are incompetent and dangerous to the people who they're supposed to protect.

OTOH, it would be good if we could actually hear an actual sane reason for an aggressive stance on drugs.

Motivated by greed more than virtue? Sorry, last time I checked your police are here to Serve and Protect, not Steal and Lie. Check your facts before you sling mud, Hipster. As for the illegality of narcotics I think a picture of a school would be an appropriate response. Why don't you go GIS that for your 'sane reason'.

I've got an idea for that: The President, in his role as the Commander in Chief of the militia of the United States of America, could nationalize them and send them to closest properly equipped US Army facility to play OPFOR in MOUT training.

Why not? There's precedent.

Also, what's the difference between a modern SWAT team and infantry?

That doesn't make it any less absurd, and it doesn't change the fact that the dispatched officers watched the people eating before raiding. Still not good enough. They could have sent an officer to investigate instead of going all paramilitary. That would have been cheaper, too.
