This is important everyone

Supplies were already very low before this.
Give blood. If you can't give blood, go down there and see if you can help out another way.

Giving blood is simple and relatively painless. Take this opportunity to donate blood, I do it every 56 days (the minimum period between donations).

Unless you are in the New York area,It may be wise to wait. The blood will be land locked until air travel is allowed again. So waiting and not flooding the blood centers would be the best, wait a day or two.

2001-09-11 01:27:21 PM
Be sure to load up on liquids and eat something before you go...

2001-09-11 01:34:22 PM
Captian T. good point, plus my local blood bank is currently packed....but they are waiving the 56 day rule down to 30.

2001-09-11 01:38:13 PM
They wont take mine. I have tried before.

2001-09-11 01:38:29 PM
I gave yesterday. I truely hope it helps someone out.

2001-09-11 01:41:17 PM
Captain T. - Blood banks might be packed, but get in there and give... even by truck my blood here in Kansas can get to NYC or DC in 36-48hrs. The local blood supply there is rapidly being depleted, and needs to be replenished. As I well know, you can go through a lot of blood in the hospital.

If you live in the D.C area please try your hardest to donate, for some reason I made an appointement yesterday to donate, kinda crazy

2001-09-11 02:02:37 PM
I used to donate blood every 56 days.
Haven't done it in about 2 years.
Last Tue, there was a blood drive where I work.
I just happened to pass by and decided to stop in and bleed.
Hope it helps someone.

Portland Oregon blood donor center is overwhelmed; try to space out your donations over the next few days and into next week. At least in Portland you can call for appointments to make donations. I suggest you do so.

Just got back from the center in Fort Wayne, IN. There's a six hour wait. I made an apointment for tomorrow morning. Our Red Cross is located next to the busiest street in the city; I left my bike leaning up against a tree for an hour, unlocked, in plain view, and nobody stole it. People are parking on the curbs down the side street near our Red Cross here about as far as I could see, it's unbeleivable. I had no idea we still had it in us. I never would have said this before today, but right now, and probably for a long time, I'm pretty damn proud to be an American.

There isn't even a bank set up near me... i have to wait a few days...

Go Type O...

Too bad they don't want my potsmoker's blood... It's great blood otherwise..

Sure nobody would mind a little THC in their system if they needed a transfusion...

oh well!

We went down to our local office, and though they aren't taking blood today, they are doing drives the rest of the week.

I also asked about requirements (I'm diabetic, and they don't usually like our blood) and they're lowering their restrictions.

Even if you've been turned back before, at least call and ask!!

2001-09-11 03:17:45 PM
I just called and scheduled to donate. The biggest thing they informed of is that blood has a shelf life of between 40-42 days. So donating today is great, but after a while it will do no good. They are trying to stagger the donations out over the next 3 weeks.

2001-09-11 03:23:25 PM
After the Oklahoma city tragedy, too many people gave blood in the first 2 days and not nearly enough in the weeks to follow. Burn victims need blood over an extended period of time, not just immediately. It is wonderful that so many people want to help, but please remember those victims over the next few weeks - not just today.

For those in St. Louis - you can also give blood in the donor room at St. John's Mercy Medical Center. Blood given will most likely be used at St. John's - but it will decrease the amount we need from Gateway Community Blood service freeing them up to give more to the victims in New York.

I'm planning on donating anyways, but out of curiousity, would donating in Canada help the US?

2001-09-11 04:43:11 PM
I gave blood today. The wait was over three hours and the Red Cross was turning people away. Only they wouldn't leave.

2001-09-11 04:43:56 PM
If you haven't donated yet, I think it's safe to say that most places are booked up for today. Donating any time in the next month, and then consistently every few months after that, will do the most good, I'd say.

2001-09-11 05:30:31 PM
this is the EXACT reason to donate blood REGULARLY.......

shame to wait until it is needed desperatly to donate...

2001-09-11 05:32:56 PM
My advice, don't go donate today. Blood only keeps for about 40 days. Stagger donations over the course of the next few weeks. Everyone and their brother will donate today, but the blood will still be needed over a longer period of time.

Everyone, go out next week and donate. Keep the blood flowing that's so desperately needed.

That's it. Veganism has stopped me before, but from now on, i'm eating a head of lettuce every day until my skin is dripping iron.

Substrate:
Not for my, I farkin hate needles and blood and such. I always have to lay down for a while after I get blood drawn.
I'm still planning on going in next week and giving though. And force myself to keep going in every 56 days to give more.

2001-09-12 03:55:36 PM
my = me.
d'oh!
