That's not cool. The kid got a heel in between his facemask, and you can tell that as soon as Norris Jr. realizes what happened, he feels bad.

Kid martial arts are good and all that but this looks like a pretty serious accident.

Holy f*ck!

2009-07-14 01:14:37 AM
For the record, that was a back spin kick (or spin heel kick), not a roundhouse.

Whew, that's gotta hurt.

Anyone know how his opponent was after he woke up?

/He did wake up, right?

He probably had a headache and felt groggy for a few days

They both feel like a heel.

That is a spinning back kick, pefectly legal. Keep your hands up.

You had a good Sifu. I used to get the same advice from my sah bum nim. You gotta take a few of those kicks to the head to learn the hard way (at least I did).

Yah he's the real deal. Tough as nails and utterly unrelenting when he's teaching. Told us a story yesterday about kumite when someone stepped on his foot to keep him close and throw him off balance. Ended up ripping open the side of his foot on the carpet....twice.

Needless to say he learned a new lesson in block and counter.

Headso: where were that kids hands when that slow moving foot was spinning around his entire body?

His hands were down, however, he was also half-heartedly going in for a roundhouse kick, but he didn't commit to it. All he did was move his momentum and body weight forward just enough that he couldn't respond in time to get out of the way of the spin hook kick his opponent had been baiting him with for at least 10 secs before he threw it.

Well I'm sure after that kid wakes up he'll experience all the benefits of martial arts -

anger management
inner peace
self esteem
focus...

come on kid. focus. how many fingers?

Dwiit (back) dolyeo (spinning/roundhouse) chagi (kick) in phonetic Korean was how I learned it.

And it's a dangerous kick to throw - all someone has to do is block it with a knifehand, two inches above the heel, and your achilles tendon is snapped, possibly beyond repair. Have fun with three months in a solid cast watching your calf atrophy to a toothpick.

Or, anyone with decent reflexes would do a leg sweep as soon as you start that kick, because you're completely committed to it and completely blind.

not completely blind if you throw it correctly, AND this guy couldn't sweep because 1)it's a WTF TKD match and sweeping isn't allowed and 2) as I stated above, his momentum and body weight were moving forward just enough that he couldn't respond in time to get out of the way, let alone attempt a sweep. Still, you are correct that had the kicker thrown the same kick offensively, rather than defensively as he did here, there is a good chance he would have been hurt instead...

The important thing to remember is that this version of TKD is a sport, not a martial art. It is a full contact sport where people can get hurt and occassionally die in the ring (new window)

Not an accident and totally legal. WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation) rules are knockout rules, standing eights and knockouts.

Subby is wrong. This is not a roundhouse kick, it is a spin heel or spin whip kick.

How did you reach that conclusion? I saw nothing that showed that he was concerned about the guy on the ground. Not say he wasn't concerned - but if he was, I certain saw no evidence of it.

full contact sport, with knockout rules, based on a martial art...what part of this is hard to understand

The guy dancing around the mat after the kick didn't exactly seem concerned about the well-being of his opponent. The guy in the crowd filming it certainly didn't sound worried, either.

It is clearly WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Fed.) and the kick is called a "hook kick" or "spinning hook kick".

Sheesh. After 50 comments I thought one of you guys would get it right?

Oh, and you strike with the flat part of your foot, not the heel. You can hit with the heel, and usually do, but it hurts like a MF!
