Arxane: You call that offensive? Pah!

Down here in Florida, as I was driving up Orange Blossom Trail, I saw a billboard that had a clear picture of the World Trade Center being struck by an airplane. The short, non-offensive message accompanying this non-political image?

"Don't elect a Democrat."

Florida is the only place I've visited in the South (and I'm from the South and have traveled all over its trash expanse) that had racist bumper stickers, T-shirts, mugs, etc for sale.

the_sidewinder You know what I don't get about the God billboards? All these quotes, I don't remember ever seeing them in a bible as a quote from God, so doesn't that then violate 2 of the 10 commandments? Wrongful use and bearing false witness?

Their rules don't apply to themselves (who does that sound like?) 'Do as I say, not as I do.'

They make up whatever they want to suit themselves. It's flexible so they can apply it to whatever or whoever they they are against at the time. It's just a matter of time when they start making billboards about gays and eventually people of color.

They wont know where to draw the line because imaginary beliefs have no bounds.

A billboard with a pic of an uncircumcized penis that said "Imagine a world with no religion" would be pretty funny and provoke just as rational of a discussion too.

/I have a better idea. Imagine a world where no one discusses religion.

//What a wonderful world it would be.

Religion is all bullshiat, and religion (superstition in general actually) has motivated people to do all kinds of atrocities. But the religious also do things like feed the homeless and starving at home and abroad, and look after people who are otherwise farked. I'm an atheist, and I don't do any of these things.
Can anyone really say with any certainty that the religious or atheists are, on the whole, any more bad or good than the other? I can't.

Didn't someone write a book about the "backlash industry" Basically no one is really upset about these things they just act that way so they have an excuse to ask for more money. Megachurches aren't going to build themselves you know.

Now now, dead people still have lungs before they've decayed too much. What the dead actually lack are the electrical impulses which cause the diaphragm to expand and contract, pulling air into and forcing air out of the lungs.

What people on this thread lack are the brains to realize a troll when they see it - though some may just be meta-trolling.

Next is the Southern Baptists, because there is no way the god they worship is the same god that fathered Jesus AND was the wrathful smiter in the OT.

It's like God respec'd Holy after being Shadow to level.

Submitted for your approval, the thought that without god/religion keeping them in line, (under the fear of eternal damnation) the hordes of people who would have previously been believers (as there is "now" nothing for them to believe in. Would turn into amoral monsters killing everything in sight.

So, can we not conclude that there are some of the faithful that therefore consider some other members of the "faithful" one crisis of faith away form being serial murders?

There are literally tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of billboards that are religious in nature throughout the US. Guess what? NO ONE COMPLAINS ABOUT THEM. It's only the Jesus freaks who can't handle a contrary viewpoint.

Wagnerian Omnibus: Sabyen91: Nobody is sanctimonious/condescending here. We have these billboards in Wisconsin. I am assuming most of the country have these hell billboards and assuming most people have seen them. I apologize if that is not the case.

To hopefully clear this up, I was never talking specifically about the "hell" billboards; as I said, I'd tend to agree with you if that's the comparison. I'm just saying that I can't equate the sentiment in "Imagine No Religion" with that of some of the more benign "God" billboards I've seen.

I guess what it comes down to is that I'm basically calling this "free-thinking" gang a bunch of schmucks who are just as bad as the drafters of the "hell" billboards, and worse than those who design the preachy but not attack-y billboards.

/sorry for making up my own words

You say you weren't saying a certain thing and then come out and say that these "free-thinkers" are just as bad as the hell creeps. I don't understand that. What these guys had on the billboards is hardly offensive. Only the professionally offended like muck4doo would spaz out about this.

Not even as a child religion made sense, still doesn't, I don't understand how people claim their is a god because we don't understand stuff.

So basically they're saying that god exists because the universe (or world) is very complex. So the existence of complex things (well, to our simian brain) means there is a god, okay...

And as time passes and we make new discoveries the Church is predictable in it's statements. At first it's like "No that's wrong, and you're wrong" then "Don't believe them, it's just a test from God" and ultimately "Yes, god made it that way because he wanted us to learn it's beauty"
