I'm pissed I went last night and it was scrubbed with like ten minutes left. The weather WAS crap though...they say it is 60% unlikely to launch today as well.

Why do they always launch in Florida? It seems the weather is ALWAYS crappy when talking about launching.

Here I thought Florida was all sunshine.

It's not so much that....I don't get why they launch at that time. Typical Florida summer weather = hot and sunny till 3ish, thunderstorms till 5, back to normal.

Ok, find us a new launch site. You have to be able to launch east without overflying populated areas for 1000 miles, and you have to be close to the equator. You also have to get your launch vehicles to the launch site from wherever they are built.

Any suggestions?

Can we just all make predictions as to why it won't launch this time then feel good about ourselves for getting it right?

But NASA already has the Reps and Senators from TX. Gotta spread out your assets to get the most support.

+1 for a sweet "The Right Stuff" reference

EwokHunter: Why do they always launch in Florida?

Florida has the southernmost contiguous land owned by the US. The closer to the equator the launchpoint, the greater the assist the Earth gives in getting the vehicle up to orbital speeds.

Seeing the shuttle launches from where I live is the only redeeming thing for me about living in Florida, still not tired of them after 6 years.

They go east AND north (depending on orbital inclination). Launching from TX would put the shuttle (and all other vehicles) on a path over Texas, Louisana, Kentucky, the eastern Midwest and Canada. Launching from Florida means that they're ALWAYS launching over the atlantic ocean. Besides, I fail to see how Texas' weather is much better than Florida's.

To wanna take you, to wanna hold you
I wanna give me all, all to you
I want you to completely understand
Just where I'm at and where I am
Oh yeah, oh yeah
I'm your boogie man, boogie man
Turn me on

Do what you want
I'm your boogie man, boogie man
Turn me on

I was on the Cape Canaveral beach on the 11th with my fingers crossed that they were just joking that they'd scrubbed the launch. Then secretly they would rocket it up and I could see it. Yes I know it wasn't really gonna happen.

The Air Force has a nearly completed shuttle launch facility at Vandenberg A.F.B. in California (just north of Lompoc). They were supposed to get the Endeavour for "Air Force Use" until we lost Challenger. The facility has been mothballed since.

Corpus is relatively arid, certainly compared to Houston, with this summer being a (miserable) exception.

Also, it's a city called "Body of Christ".

Yeah, the problem with that is when they jettison those solid rocket boosters. I don't think the offshore oil platforms and gulf port traffic would be happy with several tons of equipment landing on them.

Today has been hot and sunny all day so far.
A late afternoon summer shower qualifies for crappy weather?

I will be on the roof of my friend's condo with my 600mm lens with a clear shot of the launchpad. If it goes today I will post pix.
