Thats awesome. Fleet week in san fran tends to rock as well with the navy aviators cruising through the city below the roof lines of the buildings there:

I know lots of Farkers like to make fun of Detroit, but I never expected the US Navy to mach the city like that.

I'm not a pilot but from that picture I doubt "I'm sure the pilot waved at me."

I saw 3 fighter jets fly VERY close to my building downtown Toronto this weekend - I assume it had to do with the Indy race going on...

It was very cool seeing them so close. They must have had a lot of cleared airspace because they dropped the hammer and circled directly through the island airport's landing and takeoff routes.

I came extremely close to going that career route when I was younger...so it brought back some good memories.

That's an awesome picture. The guy standing on his balcony just got his mind blown.

Reminds me of when the Blue Angels were performing by our house on the base once. They flew so close to our home that the whole joint rattled, and a window jarred loose, slammed shut and shattered. My parents did NOT believe me when they got home and I told them that the Blue Angels did it.

2009-07-13 11:07:59 AM
Oh man. I once had three F-16s fly right over my head, about 30 above me, and it was the LOUDEST thing I've ever heard. Like temporarily stunned for a few seconds loud. If that F-18 is as close to the building as it looks, it's easily able to break dishes and windows, and probably kill sensitive pets, like birds, with the sound alone. I wonder if those people were warned that the planes would be that close (I was not in the incident above).

Yeah, I think most F15's are mothballed or in about a million pieces already, so they're not moving very fast anymore.

You're thinking of the F-14, which has been retired. F-15s are still in service and being built for export.

15 years ago I was living on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Every so often, the local blood bank would call me in for my rare blood type, and I was on the way over to donate blood. It turned out to be the time the Blue Angels were practicing for the Hydro races and air show on Lake Washington.

I heard the rumbling first. I then looked up at the tallest building in the area. 15-20 stories and I was right in front of it. Suddenly, two of the jets flying below the roofline straight at the building broke off to either side. While I was jumping clean out of both my socks and shoes... I could see a figure in the uppermost floor-to-ceiling window dive for cover.

We go to the WPAFB July 4th event every year. This year they added something new: just as the parachutist with the flag landed, two F-16's snuck up from behind the crowd, low and loud. Fighter jets put a shiat-eating grin on my face.

2009-07-13 11:24:12 AM
I would reason that the jet is a minimum of 50 feet from that guy.

I would also reason that if not before, that guy is now completely deaf.

2009-07-13 11:24:27 AM
I saw some jets buzzing the city on my way out of town to go up north for the weekend. It was pretty awesome to see them that low. They should have dropped some bombs on the abandoned buildings in the city. Now that would be cool, and it would save the city on demolition costs.

Iran still flies F-14's.

We shredded most of ours, out of concern that Iran might get spare parts for their remaining 13 airworthy F-14's.

I saw them too, but I was at the Beach, so no close up for me.

When I was a kid we used to go to the end of the runway at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque and watch the Phantoms and Eagles take off - full afterburner about 50' overhead. Wow.

Can't do that anymore.

Marshall Willenholly: Yeah, I think most F15's are mothballed or in about a million pieces already, so they're not moving very fast anymore.

Not even close. You're about 16 years too early to start making such pronouncements. Even after 2025, the Air Force still plans to have 178 F-15Cs (with new AESA radars) and 224 F-15Es in service.

That's not counting any decisions to assess some airframes for foreign sales, turning over to NASA for flight test modifications, repurposing as dedicated Air Guard interceptors, etc.

Not quite. They're alive and relatively)well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-15#Future
And the F-22 which they're planning on replacing them with is on the chopping block...

2009-07-13 11:32:06 AM
That's an amazing photo. The wingspan of the jet is 40'5"... the three floors+ of the building in front of it are probably about 30'.

2009-07-13 11:32:34 AM
I think everyone within a mile radius of that plane had their bodies turned inside out from the sheer force of awesomeness of that plane. Not to mention the earth cracking open and clouds splitting down the middle. It probably caused a few tornadoes in it's wake too. And then everyone's inside out heads asplode ear drums first.

I think the circle was making a point in the article I stole the pic from. I don't remember the details.
