I'm fairly certain that no matter what your hours of sleep are per night, you're going to die.

Great now I have to stay awake forever, this have something to do with the Nightmares on Elm street?

Huh. Last thing I heard was getting LESS than that did. So HAHA I'm going to live longer than you.

weird, and here I thought we had a 100% chance of dying no matter what we do.

under 5 hours=high stress job and/or insomnia/anxiety/other mental/physical sickness and/or cocaine/partying which leads to high blood pressure, ulcers, mania, depression etc.

6/7/8 hours=normal cycle

sleep much more than 8 hours= maybe depression and/or mental/physical sickness and/or addiction to sedative drugs?

I have also heard studies that say less sleep=weight problems.

Isn't it obvious moderation is the key and anything out of the norm probably isn't good for you?

Sleeping too long allows time for the clown to eat you.

What if you sleep exactly 5 hours per night? 'Cause that's what I do.

JuicyJ: I have also heard studies that say less sleep=weight problems.

I think that's a reverse correlation. I know that if I'm lazy all day I have a hard time getting to sleep, but if I do a lot of physical exertion I sleep like a baby.

So maybe fatties aren't doing much and therefore aren't tired enough to sleep more than four hours a night.

Also, as someone who's about to have a baby, I'm getting a kick out of these replies. Some of you talk about not sleeping much at night, but you really don't know what you're talking about.

That's why I do things in moderation.....5 days a week, I get about 4-5 hours of sleep, and then balance it out on the weekends with about 12 per night.

/wut?

What if I wake up at 7am but don't get out of bed until three in the afternoon?

I mean, I have this friend, who hypothetically doesn't get up until three....

I'll try 7 hours for a week. I normally get at least 10 hours.

How could so many people stick so well to a sleep schedule in such a regular fashion and maintain such a similar lifestyle, that they could make the connection that it was the sleep that made the difference?

If I don't sleep 10-12 hours a night, I feel drained and unable to do anything. Is that bad?

TehNacho: How could so many people stick so well to a sleep schedule in such a regular fashion and maintain such a similar lifestyle, that they could make the connection that it was the sleep that made the difference?

that's what I was wondering. since the death results resemble the normal population, isn't this more of a correlation? so if you die of a heart attack, car accident, etc - do your sleep patterns have something to do with it? Odd.

/less than 9 hrs and I fall asleep during the day

Maybe it has to with the fact that people who are able to sleep a long portion of the day may be unemployed, the unemployed tend to lack health insurance, and those without health insurance may be more likely to die of untreated illness.

2009-07-11 11:10:40 AM
I would imagine that people with chronic illnesses would tend to sleep more than healthy people.

Yeah, there is no way this was a controlled study. Everyone I know who sleeps longer than 8 hours is out of shape and probably depressed with some chronic illness.

It took 22 years to input and analyze the data? Too bad there isn't some sort of electronic device to help analyze that data!

So, now we've been told that more sleep is better, AND less sleep is better. Let me go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe people have different metabolisms, and perhaps need different amounts of sleep, and that perhaps over 22 years of "data entry" the data became so munged that the results are pretty much meaningless.

It seems more likely that government funds were applied to this study, which went nowhere, and then somebody figured out that nothing came of the "public" money. Memos flew, and "results" were CREATED to cover somebody's ass.

Kumana Wanalaia: I would imagine that people with chronic illnesses would tend to sleep more than healthy people.

Bingo. When I was healthy, I slept 5-6 hours a night and had energy to burn. Now, I could sleep 24 hours a day if I wanted to. 5-Hour Energy is quickly becoming my best friend.

Everyone is different. Some people only NEED 4 or five hours of sleep a night. Some people need 8 or more. The best way to determine what you need is to go to sleep when you have the next day off and wake up when your body tells you it's time to get your arse outta bed. And yes, lack of sleep can cause health issues. Immune defeciancies, heart issues, weight issues. And older people still need their 8 hours a night. Sorry, sleep geek here, I've done the research for work.

King Arthur: [about the inscription on the rock] What does it say, Brother Maynard?
Brother Maynard: It reads, "Here may be found the last words of Joseph of Aramathia. He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the holy grail in the Castle of Aaauuuggghhh... "
King Arthur: What?
Brother Maynard: "The Castle of Aaaauuuggghhhh"
Sir Bedevere: What is that?
Brother Maynard: He must have died while carving it.
King Arthur: Oh come on!
Brother Maynard: Well, that's what it says.
King Arthur: Look, if he was dying, he wouldn't have bothered to carve 'Aaaauuuggghhhh'. He'd just say it.
Sir Galahad: Maybe he was dictating it.
King Arthur: Oh shut up!
Sir Robin: Well does it say anything else?
Brother Maynard: No, just "Aaaaauuuugggghhh".
[knights making groaning sounds]
Sir Bedevere: Do you think he could have mean, 'Camaaaauuuuggghhhh'?
Sir Galahad: Where's that?
Sir Bedevere: France, I think.
Sir Lancelot: Isn't there a Saint "Aaaaavvvveeeesss" in Cornwall?
King Arthur: No that's Saint "Ives".
Sir Lancelot: Oh, yes. "Iiiiiivvvveeessss"!
[All knights saying, "Iiiiiivvvveeessss"]
Sir Bedevere: Whooooouuuuaaa!
Sir Lancelot: No no no, it's "Aaaaauuuugggghhhh" from the back of the throat.
Sir Bedevere: No I mean, "Whoooouuuuaaa!" as in surprise and alarm.
Sir Lancelot: Oh, you mean like, "AAAHH!"
Sir Bedevere: Yes, that's it. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Not sure what you mean by 'reverse correlation' since what you say after it backs up the less sleep=weight problems conclusion.
Correlated = two things happen together,
uncorrelated = two things who's occurrences are unrelated,
inversely related = one precludes the other.
What is reverse correlation?

My experience is less sleep = weight problems since your body can substitute food for sleep for short periods of time. That doesn't make food less fattening.

Only two kinds of adults get 8 or more hours of sleep per night: those who are depressed or those who are just farkin' lazy. It's not hard to imagine why either would have higher death rates.

2009-07-11 03:48:56 PM
lilbjorn,
Yes, those two types do get more than 8 hours of sleep a night. But some people do NEED more than 8 hours a night. I work a full time job lifting heay objects a lot and by no means can anyone call me lazy except on maybe my days off. I have to get 9 hours a night to feel functional. Every human being is different.
