I love the voice-breaking cry of "DAD!!" from the kid, as if he's watching his father being dragged away by a shark à la Quint's death in Jaws.

Ya, I'm cheering for the turtle here too. I kinda wish the kid HAD been dragged off to his watery doom--that would have made me laugh.

I saw a snapping turtle's face up close and its the scariest face ever created. Static malevolence. Their neck is as long as a man's arm too, which is always a surprise.

Well, to be fair, they were trying to help it. It had a fishhook in its mouth, which is why they were asking for pliers. They wanted to help it out & let it go.

Kid was freakin' annoying, though.

Whenever I think of a turtle's face I think of Alien Resurrection. That creature at the end. That malevolence you speak of.

I catch turtle all of the time fishing in the rivers and lakes in WV. They stand on your line and eat your bait.

So they're nasty little pests to anyone who fishes in this state.

Fish with dynamite. It's way easier, too.

NOOBS! They should have cut the line and tossed it back into the not so briny deep.

Snapping turtles are the most devious creatures. I swear they exist solely to remove the fingers of idiots and unwary children.

My dad caught one 20 years ago that was a solid 2 feet across the shell. It would snap a 3" tree limb in half in a blink.

We transported it to a fenced off quarry that had flooded years earlier, was stocked but was too dangerous to leave open for swimmers (underwater hazards) As far as I know, it still lives there. Probably eats anyone that climbs the fence to go swimming.

Just had the same thing happen to us on the weekend

Snappers will fark you up if you're not careful. Came face-to-face with one once while snorkeling, but luckily that's where they're least likely to mess with you, and he didn't. On land (or just out of the water) is a different story. Heard that in the old days, a chain was put on their shell and they were used to find drowning victims.

Wow. (Even 40 pounders are awesome)

Odds are they had to kill the turtle to get it to let go. Those bastards don't open their mouth once they clamp down. If they don't take a off chunk of flesh, you kill them and pry the dead jaws loose. Sad, but true.

Yup, he enjoyed his 15 minutes of internet fame for that random "Ed style" of ed edd eddy thought. Somewhere out there is a follow-up news article explaining the origin of the statement. Apparently a turtle exhibit at the fair really impressed him. I swear it's the makeup that put him over the top.
