RE: Fred Durst... yeah, I found it amusing that we're getting messages of peace and love from the guy who wrote this song and incited riots at Woodstock 90-whatever. There's someone to rally behind.

Avril lost due to the sole fact that she's canadian and americans are freakin' xenophobes. Americans only like Celine Dion because she is a slap in the face to the more talented canadian artists.

DISCLAIMER I am not supporting Avril. I am merely pointing out that no canadian artist ever won a Grammy do to the xenophobes outright fear and hatred of foriegners. If Shania Twain won a grammy, it's due to her singing Nascar-loving, alcoholic, roadkill-eating, shotgun-owning, incest-and-inbreeding, "Make you squeal like a pig.", Godforsaken COUNTRY. Like Celine, that too is an insult.

I am constantly amazed that people think music is worth arguing over. I also think that Bluwater is a dork for being so picky.

Adam And His Package were robbed!!!

Coldplay is ok. But once Radiohead's new album of more standard, mainstream music comes out, everyone will forget about them, just like they forgot about Travis.

that's what the said amnesiac would be... so don't get your hopes up. whatever it is, it will be good, but i'm not expecting a return to the bends, even if it was a classic.

at this point radiohead is operating on a higher plane of existence than mere mortals, so i'm not sure what to expect.

2003-02-24 12:06:38 PM
Travis will be back...

At least I hope they will be. I like 'em more than Coldplay.

But I like Ben Folds even more than that. Not that he has anything to do with Britpop (or I guess I should say U.K.pop since Travis = Scotsmen).

Long comments list........dunno if this has been said but.....I could have sworn her big song was not written by her..

Random replies:
I'm not saying I dislike Travis. They write great catchy songs and they did an amazing, hilarious live version of Britney's Hit me baby one more time! I'm just saying that they don't have the flashiness (read: arrogance) to be huge pop stars. That's ok with me!

Ben Folds will always have his cult fans. Not to worry. Plus, he's producing WILLIAM SHATNER'S album this year! Get fvckin' ready, people! I don't know whether to laugh or cry, but I know I'll be buying it!

From what I've heard, Radiohead's newest IS going to be sort of a return to the basics. No computers or strange noises, just guitar. But who really knows what's floating around in Thom Yorke's oddly misshapen head

Amazed and stunned that Jesse Harris, who wrote Norah Jones' song beat out the Boss for song of the year. Those who know Jesse, know that this is a much deserved award. Same for Norah Jones. Everybody who is biatching about "real" musicians getting overlooked in favor of industry creations like Norah Jones have it backwards. Until VERY recently she and Jesse were playing for tips and beer downtown. As real as it gets, folks...

Nora Jones plays the piano pretty well.

She can't sing for SH*IT and you people KNOW it or else you all are friggin' tone deaf!

And WTF was with that 16 yr old kid playing before James Taylor? Was he playing the same song he was SINGING? If that's what you call SINGING?

Bring back awesome bands like Great White, who can REALLY SET THE HOUSE ON FIRE!!!

maybe it will go to prove that the music industry has starved us all for good music. seeing as she won perhaps the pendulm will swing the other way.

alot of good music won this year. except bruce springsteen. call me stupid but like bob dylan he should write songs and not play them.

alot of talent won this year like michelle branch and santana, john mayer, sherl crow, india.arie.bruce springsteen, dixie chicks people with real talent

I am glad the all looks no talent hacks (britney, nsync, backstreet shiats )didnt make a whimper this year.

maybe album will pick up now

Counting Crows....

That's all that needs to be said. Pure musical genius and talent.

Counting Crows are NO-TALENT ASSCLOWNS.

Jeebus, get some taste!

Nice try with the flamebait...not in the mood for a flame war today.

To each their own...unless it's April Lavig-nay.

2003-02-24 01:01:36 PM
Avril didn't win because she's Canadian? I don't think so. I mean, didn't Alanis Morisette win a boatload of grammies for her first album?

And Norah Jones' music is good for winding down. It's relaxing.

Ok so the chick wins a shiatload of Grammy's in one night.

What I can't stand is hearing all over the news today that she comes by her talent naturally, because her father was/is? some guru sitar player.

Then I hear that she was raised in Texas by her single mother.

WTF?? Sounds to me like Mom needs some credit here.

Still don't get how she came away with FIVE. Yeesh.

For those who biatched about Norah Jones winning when she didn't even write her own material, I just bought the CD. She wrote two of the songs including the title track, and co-wrote one.

I just started listening to the disc, and it's a refreshing change from the stuff that's popular with the kiddie-poos today. I nearly gagged when my ten year old niece asked me to download some Eminem stuff for her.

I only bought one new release in 2002...Sheryl Crow's "C'mon C'mon" (pretty good). This'll probably be the only for 2003.

Remy Shand kicks ass! I had the opportunity to see him live last year here in LA during the summer. Glad to finally be on the ground floor of an artist that HAS talent. I think the awards just start to make less and less sense. Can't wait for his next cd.

The same awards people that didn't give the beatles, elvis and award.

And the same people that never gave Marvin Gaye an award for What's Going On(if an album ever deserved a grammy it was THAT one).

*bleah*

Bye.

Total_spaceship_guy,

When you grow up and grow some balls, maybe you'll respect what alternative music is and maybe goive some props to that grand-daddy's of alternative, R.E.M.

Last I checked, I don't hear any "Flaming lips" on the alternative stations I listen to. Maybe they're alternative to your world, but not here on Earth.

2003-02-24 01:55:50 PM
Oh by the way, Coldplay deserved the grammys. Damn good group.

2003-02-24 01:58:18 PM
I've been listening to John Mayer for a little over a year now, and I'm glad to see that he won a Grammy. It's too bad that they casterated his performance by making him sing an abbreviated version of "Your Body is a Wonderland". Not my favorite song, but if it'll increase the chances of him showing up on radio in San Antonio, I'm all for it. At least he got to groove a bit.

In hindsight, I'm glad he didn't get "Best New Artist". At least now he won't disappear.

2003-02-24 01:58:32 PM
In the meantime, I was happy to see Pat Metheny win his umpteenth jazz album grammy... a musician's musician if there ever was one.

*disappears back into the crowd*

In summary of the above posts:

Who the hell is Nora Jones
Coldplay is alternative?
The Grammys don't like Canadia!
Remember that crappy Flaming Lips song from 1994?

Dave Matthews Band did get a nomination, but I can't remember what it was for.

He did win, except he won it as "John Mayer".

Yeah. They're "alternative music" for people who can't tell the difference.

Here. Here. PSCOOTER.

Heres to hoping the pendulum swings.

Pandering bubble gum: Old and Busted.
Exceptionalism: Brand new hotness.

Now if jazz could only get more DRAMATIC all would be swell.

Does anybody read this far down?

2003-02-24 02:25:05 PM
Norah Jones is overrated. I guess it's alright to rip off Carole King, because most of Norah's fans are too young to remember.

John Mayer? I think someone already said his "Wonderland" song was better when it was "Crash Into Me."

Vanessa Carleton? She's been lip syncing to Tori Amos in front of the mirror since puberty hit a month ago.

Avril Levigne wouldn't know punk rock if Joe Strummer rose from his grave and whacked her in the head with his guitar.

/rant from bitter old hag who stopped listening to "new" music after Cobain died

2003-02-24 02:26:30 PM
see, I thought The User's "Symphony #2 for Dot Matrix Printers" might win something.

Or maybe that Brokeback album.

But then I realized that these awards are predicated solely on record sales. Too bad that most of America is sucking Nelly's asshole, because y'all are missing out on the good stuff.

2003-02-24 02:27:55 PM
As far as Big Orange Cat goes, Carole King sucks, Live sucks, Tori Amos sucks, Kur(d)t Cobain sucks, Joe Strummer is all right.

Kurt would take exception to that statement had his wife not shot him in the face he not killed himself.

2003-02-24 02:31:37 PM
Halfzware_Shag, Actually "Crash into Me" was Dave Matthews -- who also sucks.

2003-02-24 02:34:27 PM
Halfzware_Shag, So then if you think all the old-timers suck, you must think the new-timers who ripped them off suck too?

2003-02-24 02:40:42 PM
KnightShyfte You are forgetting the Sabberetes,Delta 9, Rob Gee,Lenny and Robby Gee,and Ron d. Core and any artist on the THUNDERDOME labels LETS go HARDCORE

2003-02-24 02:41:55 PM
the old-timers (by which I mean 1960s and 1970s) are mostly irrelevant. The "new-timers" who dominate awards shows and MTV suck, too. However, there's more good music coming out now than there ever has been.

2003-02-24 02:43:11 PM
I'd be worried about threadjacking if we weren't already a long ways off the beaten path, but:

On the subject of computer-enhanced pop-star voices:
Who came up with the idea of Lance Bass voicing Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts. Sadly when I heard Sephiroth speakin I thought "This guy's pretty badass", but then I saw the credits and exclaimed "DEAR GOD, NO! YOU GUYS TRICKED ME! THOSE ELECTRONICALLY-ENCHANCED DEMONIC VOICE AUGMENTATIONS MADE ME THINK HE WAS COOL!!!!"

IMHO, the 1991-1997 rock/alternative period would beg to differ.

2003-02-24 02:46:17 PM
i have no idea why the hell i came back to this thread.

Zulu_as_Kono:

Well, you've already shown your musical ignorance by praising Norah "Hype" Jones, but now you really did it.

care to copy/paste the post in which i praised her?

i try really, really hard to keep my personal taste in music to myself. not once did i say whether or not i actually like her.

2003-02-24 02:47:14 PM
if you heard it on the radio from 1991-1997, chances are it was a disposable product. Just like the crap that always emenates from Clear Channel radio stations.

I can think of maybe 4 or 5 decent mainstream bands from that time period

2003-02-24 02:50:19 PM
did "who let the dogs out" win any awards?

kthxbye

2003-02-24 02:58:54 PM
coldplay sang "hot in here" (for a bit) while in st. louis, so did the roots.... both times it was the highlight of the show for me. nelly is the shiat.

coldplay was also the most boring concert i have ever been too, it is a shame that guy is boinking gywneth. sigh, gywneth.

also, does anyone find the name "best performance" a bit of a misnomer? is it supposed to refer to all those times the radio has performed those songs for me? otherwise, i find it doubtful that what mayer did at teh grammys, while good, was the best performance of the year.....

I still think Gov't Mule got robbed.

Fred Durst can lick my dirty arse after an evening of curry and pints.

Agreeance?!

I think we're all in agreeance that you're a farking retard, Fred.

Nice worthless, half-assed antiwar statement. Jackass probably has no idea what's going on but just figured it would be cool to break the rules and protest a non-existent war that he knows nothing about.

Then he chickenshiats out of it and uses a dumb motherfarking non-word like "agreeance."

Stupidest. Person. Ever.

2003-02-24 03:08:19 PM
1. Johnny Cash is a national treasure.

2. There was a significant award given last night:

Best Contemporary Folk Album(Vocal or Instrumental.)
This Side
Nickel Creek
[Sugar Hill Records, Inc.]

Though, I'm still trying to figure out how they are "folk".

2003-02-24 03:14:59 PM
MajShakes, I couldn't agree more. "I think this war thing should just go away" Gee Fred, thanks for your intelligent contribution to the debate.

Kid Rock and Sheryl Crowe screwed up by not singing Picture

Kid Rock screwed up You're an Original big time (duh!). Where the hell was Lenny Kravitz?

you should hear fred ranting and threatening like a vengful god on taproot's answering machine tape when they rejected his offer to sign them to his lable, he thinks he is some punk god. But sadly his music is pathetic pop, pure and simple, pop, it happens to have yelling and distorted guitar but its still basic pop, he is a true blue hollywood poser to be sure

Um...you're comparing Pearl Jam/Nirvana/Eels/Green Day/Alice in Chains/Radiohead/Live/MxPx/Soundgarden/Flaming Lips/Mudhoney/Smashing Pumpkins/Tori Amos/Stone Temple Pilots/etc. etc. etc....

...to Clear Channel fodder?

Er...no. To enjoy the indie scene is one thing, but to dismiss any band that "makes it" is just wrong. Many of these bands have/had legitimate grass-roots followings.
