Hehe, I wish I were that lucky... me and my friend sold somethings we found for Diablo II in a few hours for a gross profit of 63 bucks. Nothing great though, only ended up with about 23 dollars for each of us. Oh well, it's essentially free money isn't it?

2001-09-11 12:04:33 AM
63/2 = 23? Um...

2001-09-11 12:08:33 AM
well, net profit was 63 - 17 = 46 dollars after ebay and paypal fees.

2001-09-11 12:11:19 AM
thats just twisted.

bucks for a bunch of pixels?

how very very strange...

2001-09-11 12:14:26 AM
Friend of mine made a few grand selling this stuff, but I can't ever seem to find the good stuff to sell.

2001-09-11 12:18:57 AM
What sad bastard would part with his money for this?

-um, baby, I'd love to take you out but I just spent a grand on the Vizier Sword of Eternal Stupidity so I'm a little short..

2001-09-11 12:31:01 AM
oops
sorry, forgot that the kind of person who would be doing this would be unlikely to have a girl, hence the eternal gaming.

What sad moronicans."I manly man,I haev teh level 3 genital piercings of teh devli!I paid 5000$ fro tehm!" said investment banker Gerald Kipp,AKA HomoeroticPaladinMan73215.

This isn't as weird as the guy in the seventies who marketed
Pet Rocks.

the real money is in everquest characters. my friend was being offered $15,000 for his level 99 (or whatever) priest. but sony had just made it illegal to buy or sell EQ stuff, and the threat of having his 14 hours/day of EQ taken away from him was enough to keep him on the right side of the law.

2001-09-11 12:40:54 AM
14 hours a day?
wtf?!!!!!!!
sounds like it would have been the best thing for him to have sold his character and try to get on with his life.
how old is he?

2001-09-11 12:46:19 AM
b_f: yeah, huh? And turn a nice profit at the same time...

2001-09-11 12:46:51 AM
I make $$$ selling my Everquest stuff. EQ is a killer game and i play so much i figured i might as well make some money.

put that in yer pipe n' smoke it.

2001-09-11 12:50:23 AM
oh, yeah... my GF and i play together.

Sad? perhaps.

i may be a dork but i make boucoup money programming and my GF is fine.

EQ!!

2001-09-11 01:02:10 AM
GF? is that some kinda SF thing?

2001-09-11 01:05:11 AM
Sydstyk
no offence man. if it works for you and your girl and you make bucks then sweet!
14 hrs a day just sounded like danger Will Robinson.
Guess its the difference between recreational drug taking and being a junkie...
I have a friend who literally is lost to gaming.
If you want to talk to him you need to get online and send him mail or messages.
He works at an internet cafe thing and was so zoned the ther day went I went to see him that I had to e-mail him saying 'dude, i'm sitting next to you'
scary stuff.

2001-09-11 01:12:11 AM
whoa. i know what u mean. sometimes she has to drag me out of the house. we live by a giant park with a lake...

i'm like "i HAVE to kill that stupid dragon! i need revenge for when he killed me yesterday!"

she just looks at me and rolls her eyes.

picnics with her by the lake is just about the only thing that can drag me away from EQ.

*le sigh*

'Puter ganes are fun.

I am hurt and shamed.

This is in my experiences as a farker, my first encounter with a typo in the little blurb beside the link.

I don't really give a sh1t but i'm surprised no one else has already pointed it out.

2001-09-11 01:33:07 AM
Dialbo?

2001-09-11 01:55:15 AM
yeah, we lost contact with that guy for quite a while there. he had three computers in his room and three EQ accounts that he would play simultaneously. it got to the point where he quit answering his house phone and his cell phone, never responded to email or icq, and his mother quit delivering him messages. (does it surprise anyone to learn that he does, in fact, live in his mother's basement?) an intervention was planned, but he emerged from his room in time to prevent massive hardware theft/destruction.

what's the moral of this story? there is no moral, it's just a bunch of stuff that happened. now, get me a beer.

God, what losers!

Now I've got to get back to finding an anonymizer so I can Fark from work....

This is some really cool shiat. I can't believe no one's commented that William Gibson's Cyberspace is one step closer because of this. I can't believe that Blizzard sarariman said they don't want to create professional item sellers either. Back when Diablo first came out, I predicted this, but the system wasn't secure enough then, probably still isn't now, as Funvill pointed out, but the hardcore otaku is apparantly willing to pay. In another 20 years, when virtual reality goes beyond gaming technology, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this. The kids can make money designing webpages and hunting items in MMRPGs -- in the future, you'll be paying someone called HomoeroticPaladinMan73215 to design your virtual estate, which will be connected to everything else in the well.

Augie Ben Doggie: I think you're mistaken....BF is more of an SF thing than GF.

Dutch: As soon as I finished reading the article, all I could think of is William Gibson's books. I mean, c'mon....the main trade in his future was INFORMATION. If this, on top of the Internet going GUI, isn't reason enough for non-Gibson readers to pick up, and Gibson readers to take another look at, Gibson's books, then what is?

What in the hell? How sad can people get? I've yet to have more than 5 bucks worth of fun playing any of those online RPG's.

Then again, I've made a few grand painting and selling wargaming miniatures, so I tend to like the folks with that kind of money to burn.

2001-09-11 04:24:53 AM
gaddamn it how come no one told me about this!! I coulda made 10 to 20 bucks by now!

2001-09-11 04:27:48 AM
All very well about paying people to design virtual spaces in a cyberworld, but I don't think I'd trust anyone with the name HomoeroticPaladinMan73215 to do something like that.

"LOL!!1!I puts teh lava on teh walls!" or some such shenanigans of shiat.

Sorry Sdystyk, but you are quite possibly the saddest human being I have ever known of.

This stuff really is as bad in Korea as they say it is. The Korean mafia is really big in this.

I heard one story about a guy who asked his friend to take over his character for a few days. One of the guy's rivals paid the friend $3,000 to delete the character. Afterwards the I hear the police got involved.

ahahaha

2001-09-11 08:40:05 AM
This is as sad as something I heard when I was at school... a tagger went around vandalising property with his "tag" and then sold the tag to some loser for 200 bucks, so this guy could say he did it and get all the credit... how pathetic
