The thing I can't get over about conan is that he puts absolutely no effort into his stand-up at the beginning of the show. None of the jokes are remotely funny and almost all of them end with the audience saying something like "I LOVE YOU CONAN!" and then he touches his nipples or swings his thighs and a big round of applause.

The only thing I really do enjoy about Conan's show is his pre-prepared clips. He does very well with them, but why even have the stand-up and guest interviews if he's going to half-ass them?

"Arnocorps Crom (strong On His Mountain) lyrics"

Ringtones Send "Crom (strong On His Mountain)" Ringtone to your Cell Ringtones

A standard or symbol, perhaps on a shield
Two snakes together, facing each other

Crush your enemies seen driven before you!
Hear the lamentation of their women!

Crom! Strong! On! His Mountain!
Crom! Strong! On! His Mountain!
(repeat)

My father died for the riddle of steel
From gods of the sky, darkness of chaos

Crush your enemies seen driven before you!
Hear the lamentation of their women!

(chorus)

He laughs at your winds, he laughs from his mountain
I seldom pray, he doesn't listen

Crush your enemies seen driven before you!
Hear the lamentation of their women!

(chorus x2)

[OH Conan O'Brien... who the fark cares]

His monologues really are crap. IMHO, they go like this:
1) Lousy, predictable joke (Bill Clinton likes sex?! I totally didn't see that punchline coming!)
2) Joke bombs.
3) Conan improvs around how crappy joke was. I laugh.
Either they're doing steps 1 and 2 strictly for the purpose of causing step 3 or they need to fire Leno's writers, who apparently came with the timeslot.

But yes, his out-and-about interactions with real people are hilarious.

Since my opinion of both Letterman and O'Brien are well known
let's get to the real meat of the article:

(ABC's "Nightline" beat them both.)

There it is.

Both these crappy guys are beat out by a POS 'news' program.

Considering how terrible Nightline is it really says something about how poorly people preceive 'The Late Tonight Show'

I tried to watch an episode of Conan's Tonight Show... with the important word being "tried".

The tempo was wrong.
The atmosphere of the show was wrong for the time slot.
The jokes were lame.

I remember thinking to myself how much I miss Johnny Carson's version of the show. I didn't feel this way after Leno took over, but Conan has pretty much destroyed the show.

I hope NBC is happy. I find myself watching Letterman more and more, and I was never a big Letterman fan in the past.

I don't know what you mean about the first thing there, the show goes at the same tempo, with the same set-up as every other network late night show for the last several decades: Monologue, comedy bit, interviews, music guest. The atmosphere of the show is wrong for the time slot? What the fark does that even mean? God forbid it isn't the same exact atmosphere as Carson 40 years ago, you old fart. And as far as the third thing you said there, I think you should lead with that because that's the only opinion you expressed that isn't downright stupid.

Michael Jackson death week is not an effective week to use for ratings comparison. Letterman was beating Conan about half the time during the week before Michael's death.

The Jackson coverage is more likely to appeal to older people who remember Michael as the pop star and not the child molester and that takes away from Letterman more than Conan.

/all the old people I know hate Conan
//likes 'em both, watches Colbert, puts Letterman on the DVR, and watches Conan on teh Hulu

I would disagree with you entirely. Letterman isn't the least bit funny on monologues and the only time he IS funny is scripted bits where other people write his stuff- like the top 10 lists.

Eh, none of them are as funny as Craig Ferguson, not by a mile.

I love his attitude and style, very genuine and less "professional" and more like how real people joke around about things rather than processed and focus grouped "jokes"

Conan is a close second because he gets a lot of that as well, but he doesn't pull it off quite as well, except, as some else pointed out, in the non monologue segments before the interviews start.

I'm at least old enough to remember Carson. He was a comedic genius. Despite that, his monologues sucked every bit as much. It's not the jokes, it's how you deliver them. And Conan is definitely comparable to Carson (and head & shoulders above Leno and Letterman) in that regard.

I'm glad Conan and Dave are going head to head: Dave's a little out of practice from having to compete with Leno the Unfunny for years so he didn't have to try hard to be better.

With Conan, you get a younger and slightly more insane Dave. And I hope this makes the both of them better comedians. If they improve themselves and make some damn fine comedy that the both of them are very capable of doing, then all of us with benefit.

No, that is followed by him saying "I love you too, sir." Every freaking night for the past two weeks. And yes, I'm fully aware they were in reruns this past week.

Conan is enjoyable, but has way too many prepared bits, and is more or less just there to keep me awake until Ferguson comes on.

Actually, that may be a bit unfair. I think a few nights (in a row), he made a comment about the audience applause going from enthusiastic to scary.

I don't think you actually want to see that graph, because I'm pretty sure it would make you look like an idiot. Conan seems to be popular with the college intellectual crowd these days. Maybe not to the extent of Jon Stewart, but I think Conan probably skews fairly young and educated.

The first few nights of the show had audio issues. It sounded like they mic'd the in studio speakers rather than recording directly from the mic on Conan.

Goldeneye007: The thing I can't get over about conan is that he puts absolutely no effort into his stand-up at the beginning of the show.

Are you sure you weren't watching Jimmy Fallon? It's like he sprints through the jokes with poor timing and to make up for it gives the cue cards away. The improvised joke worked once or twice but he does it on every show now.
