Seems reasonable. The first thing women did when they got the vote was get Prohibition passed. We should have taken their vote away the moment they did that.

cchris_39: Antonio_Talibanderas: Not when one of her biggest problems as a national candidate was that she was still a little green and needed more experience governing. I recall Pat Buchanan lecturing Chris Matthews on this - something like: "she needs to go back to Alaska, continue to govern with tremendous popularity and support and come back in 2012 with a record of successful conservative leadership."

Ya know, 20 years ago I would have agreed with you - well ok 2 years ago. But things have changed. Obama was just as green, probably even worse. But despite what the press says, ideology IS important. Obama is an ideologue, so is Palin, so was Reagan. That's why the Dem's fear her, they know she is the mirror to Obama.

Stop taking drugs. It's affecting your reasoning. NOBODY in the Democratic party is afraid of this idiot.

CanisNoir - yelmrog: This is a woman who, when asked about which magazines she was fond of, could not name one. Not one. Couldn't even throw one out there and fake it. I mean, what was the deal there?

You know, I don't read a single damn magazine; not a one. I read the internet and watch some cable, but Magazines, couldn't be bothered. So given the same question, under the same pressure, I'd probably bumble that one too.

You're not qualified to be VP or POTUS either.

This is precisely the problem. People think she's not dumb because to them, she seems as smart as they are. I don't say this for the sake of insulting you, but if you don't see how dumb Sarah Palin is, the odds are pretty good that it's because you're on or below the same rung of the ladder.

To be a bit blunt in explaining what I'm talking about, do you think retarded people know how dumb they are? I mean, it's probably so extreme that they realize there's a fundamental difference in the way they think and the way everyone else thinks... but they don't have the intellect to grasp the difference. They don't understand what they can't understand.

They believe the things they believe are right just like everyone else... otherwise they wouldn't believe them. The problem is they're using a faulty or less efficient apparatus to arrive at their beliefs. They're less capable of properly implementing reason and logic and perception. No matter how hard they try or how much they work at it, they simply will not ever have an apparatus capable of grasping trigonometry. They're as physically incapable of it as I am physically incapable of throwing a 100 MPH fastball or levitating a pencil with my mind.

Moreover, do you think they know how dumb other retarded people are? Being unable to grasp their own limitations, they are unable to see those same limitations in others of comparable intellect... because they're operating on the same intellectual level.

I can SEE how dumb Sarah Palin is with the very same clarity with which you can see how dumb retarded people are... or even the real-life equivalents of Forrest Gump or Karl Lee from Sling Blade... people where there are no physical indicators, but the deficit is clearly visible just the same. I can see it and hear it because I'm a lot smarter than she is. I can see and hear it in the language she uses and the way she conveys ideas and perceives the things around her. I and a lot of other people can see it as clear as day.

When someone says they can't see it, I'm forced to conclude that they're operating at a comparable level.

"She's just as smart as me" doesn't mean much when you're not that smart.

The fact is that there are some people who can think circles around you. There are people that can comprehend things that won't even fit in my brain. It's like a dog whistle... just because you can't hear it doesn't mean it's not there.

Nearly everyone thinks they're smart, but 50% of people are of below average intelligence. Contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe, you can't run out and become a world champion boxer just because you want it bad enough and you can't be the bestest leader of the free world ever just because you're convinced that you're as smart as anyone else... because you're simply not as anyone else. Neither am I... and I'm pretty goddamn smart.

technicolor-misfit: "She's just as smart as me" doesn't mean much when you're not that smart.

My difficulty isn't so much that. There are many different types of smarts, though they do have one thing in common: the knack of paying attention. My problem, with Palin, is that I very often cannot understand a single damned thing she's trying to say.

I had to watch the resignation gush three times before I could parse the godawful monotone screech into something with rhetorical meaning. She is the most appalling communicator. It's as if someone had taken the text of Finnegan's Wake, painted it red white & blue, ran it through a shredder and then stapled individual fragments to the foreheads of the True Believers with a nailgun.

The people she's talking to want to believe the wisdom of the words that come out of her mouth, even though it's utter garbage--illogical, self-contradictory, unsubstantiated, poor and dishonest and everything else awful. But they want to believe it's fine stuff, so they suspend their disbelief and do so. Because of the team and abortion and Jesus and all those things.

The issue isn't her (or their) intelligence. It's belief and the need to believe that if you close your eyes and wish real hard and knock the heels of your shoes together three times that Sarah will come good and there won't be any corruption and there won't be any vindictiveness and that abstinence-only does work and ... everything else.

Sarah Palin is not just a woman in Alaska. She is a compelling story, once you invest in her. What is fascinating is that she is such an inutterably poor and compromised candidate that you really do have to be in a kind of fugue-state to deny all the horror she contains.

She is a tale, told of an idiot.

2009-07-04 05:24:28 PM
Palin was picked for the VP slot when Hillary was not Obama's pick.

They looked around, made a bad choice in that they thought ANY woman would pick up the Hillary voters, and ended up with someone who was so far out of her league in every way that even her instant celebrity could not help the ticket.

They tried to bolster their chances by making Joe The Plumber the GOP hero.

Then, after Obama is elected they choose Michael Steele to head the GOP.

So many missteps it's hard to follow.

PartTimeBuddha: The issue isn't her (or their) intelligence.

Well.. I have to say I think it is, to a degree. Cruise thru Freepertown or HotAir and note all the comments that say Sarah makes perfect sense, while Obama is incoherent because you "can't understand what he's talking about half the time". Ummm, I have an alternate theory about that, kids...

However, that being said:

It's belief and the need to believe that if you close your eyes and wish real hard and knock the heels of your shoes together three times that Sarah will come good and there won't be any corruption and there won't be any vindictiveness and that abstinence-only does work and ... everything else.

Agreed times eleventy. Even if next week she's indicted, arrested, and then goes on Barbara Walters and outright confesses to some heinous crime, her true believers will still say it was the media and the libruls and that awful "Barry" who framed her, and we all know it. There will be no convincing them, ever. It's a waste of time to try.

But I don't have any particular desire to see her life destroyed. There are worse human beings on the planet than poor ignorant deluded Sarah. If she just goes away, makes a lovely living off speaking engagements for the rest of her life, and no longer has any governmental authority over the public ever again, I'm cool with that.

I keep wondering if it wasn't really as simple as that. They needed a woman, they needed someone who would complement the "mavrik"-y-ness of McCain's message. A nice pair of gams didn't hurt, and would appeal to a male-dominated party that hasn't had a looker to admire for a while. They needed someone with enough ambition to do whatever she had to do to get ahead, and not ask too many questions.

What they didn;t count on was her self-image and unshakable belief that she's running the show.

You're right. I should have been clearer. I ought to have said:

"The issue isn't her (or their) intelligence, but their willing suspension of that intelligence because..." (of their beliefs/need to believe).

I was trying to get across the point that some very bright people can be extremely dim, on times.

Here's what I see as possibilities.

1. She's going to be hit by some sort of scandal. Whatever it is, it's going to be the iceberg to her Titanic, and she's jumping ship now. When you consider the sorts of scandals people have survived politically in the past, this one should be a doozy if true.

2. Someone with clout told her to go away, now. Explains the sudden resignation and the taking it for the team metaphor but who could have that much clout?

3. She suddenly snapped at all the press with the Vanity Fair piece being the straw that broke the camel's back. It is not easy living any person's life with the whole world's attention focused on you ever but when you're the constant butt of everyone's jokes, it must be awful tempting to just say screw it, I'm going home, and let the world go elsewhere for its finger-pointing. I'd give her props if this one's true and we never see her again.

Heh. This, but with an important addition. It's impossible for you to Wield Terrifying Power when people cease to take you seriously.

Has she disappointed or been a significant liability to anyone, recently? Maybe someone with a bit of a temper, quite a lot of connections up on the Hill... someone not famous for forgiveness? Someone who has been exquisitely and extraordinarily quiet about things regarding her for several months?

A big issue for Palin is you never know what's lurking behind the scenes.

She took the VP slot on the family values ticket knowing her underage, unmarried daughter was pregnant.

She told the world that they would get married - and many doubted this would happen.

The minute her ticket lost, the boyfriend was wished into the cornfield.

It is amazing the level of "forgiveness" Palin gets from conservatives considering how full of BS she is.

She quits because she doesn't want to be a lame duck and just collect a paycheck. Um how about working at the job you were elected to do?

How about becase your poll numbers as Governor don't matter anymore, working your tail off making this right for you state, doing a great job and then running for President?

This is weird stuff here.

I agree. They just can't seem to let go.

I never much cared for Palin. When McCain chose her as her running mate, he lost almost the entire moderate base which is far more important than the religious right that he cemented with her. It was a stupid move. But that's in the past. The election is over and Palin should have disappeared into obscurity where she belongs, except the lefty moonbats need her to prove some point that isn't clear and probably isn't all that important.

OgreMagi: The election is over and Palin should have disappeared into obscurity where she belongs, except the lefty moonbats need her to prove some point that isn't clear and probably isn't all that important.

She gets coverage and likes it. No one forced her to call a press conference and resign in such a bizarre manner. (Unless she was forced by forcing forces, unknown.)

Because she's so unclear, much of the discussion is centred around 'what is she thinking?' and goes like this:

(i) Lefty: She's not thinking anything! She stupid, corrupt and gonna swing so high, massa!
(ii) Righty: She's GENIUS! Three whole years to arrange toy soldiers and turn the country into what we want it to be!

But it's her own actions -- the faux outrages and odd behaviour -- that provoke this. If she did sit down and shut up and get on with her job then I think much of this would die down. None of it comes from a vaccum.
