That's why kids with popular names change them to unpopular ones in college.

What the fark is subby talking about? Having an unpopular name is not the issue here. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, unpopular is not the preferred nomenclature. Old School, please.

Not ironic. Coincidental. There, I said it.

Being named Darren (seriously), I'm getting a kick out of this. Although I think my brother, Kyle, is more likely the future jailbird between the two of us.

But what if the popular names are stupid?

It's all those Aidens, Braydens, and Cadens that I'm worried about.

The only bummer about my name (Ian) is that I was never able to find the state license plate keychains with my name on them in tourist shops as a kid.

Of course Walter is going to check out the likelihood of his own name within the study

The ironic part is that no one has pointed out that it's not ironic yet, amirite

So the dude reads Freakonomics, and on a slow news day decides to rehash it missing most of the point (post hoc ergo propter hoc).

Careful Walter, you're on watch for our next Florida tag.

This research was already done a decade ago.

Your name has zero impact on your life. The factors that DO impact your life also impact what you are likely to be named.

Don't worry about them, with a name as lame as that they'll just be the sissy kids that get rocks thrown at them.

seanwlambert: You mean names like Jamarkus and Lashika?

No. Africoinage names don't get made fun of because the kids mostly go to de facto segregated schools where everybody is named Qu'niqu'é or Xykromosome. Or if they don't, they're automatically considered to be badass.

Nsmes that get made fun of are either gender inappropriate, unintentionally funny, or handed down from relatives born in the 1930s.

Try to read 'Freakonomics', a great book on the economics of unusual topics (drugdealers,...). They have a chapter on names and what your name tells about yourself (based on population statistics). They say that there are typical 'afro-american'* and 'caucasian'* names and since afro-americans significantly more than average choose strange names (and spellings) and end up in prison more easy, you can draw your own conclusions.

/did not RTFA

What about people who shorten their unpopular names to a more "acceptable" nickname like WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLT TTTTTTTTTTT?

2009-07-03 10:07:03 AM
Didn't someone do a study once of the names of people on death row and concluded that if your name is a variant of Duane Lee then you are doomed to be a lifer, especially if you have no middle name?

2009-07-03 10:08:58 AM
MAJOR generalizations ahead:

In my opinion, the real story here is that many parents (mothers, primarily) who come from low-income, uneducated backgrounds tend to think names like Misty, Cheyanne, Destiny, Charity, Brogan, Tristen, Dalton, Sierra, and Fancy are cute and awesome.

They also tend to raise their children in squalid and desperate conditions, with little parental supervision. What interaction they do have with their children includes smoking, drinking, swearing, and fighting, and the children learn their social behavior from this.

I knew a guy named Garland Hooker. How unfortunate....

that said, if you're name includes and apostrophe and is a bastardised spelling of an actual name, you're pretty much doomed for life and no one will expect any more of you other than to drink malt liquor out of a brown bag.
