Doc Daneeka: The 0-100 range in the Fahrenheit scale is a remarkably good fit for the range of atmospheric temperatures commonly experienced by people throughout the habitable climates on Earth. Temperatures close to 100 feel hot, temperatures close to 0 feel cold, and temperatures around 50 feel cool and pleasant. It's pretty darn intuitive and user-friendly. Sure, in some places it occasionally gets below 0 F or above 100 F, but these are rarer and regarded as extreme temperatures, at which people should not spend much time outdoors.

Obviously, Celsius is a better system for scientific and industrial applications. But I feel that Fahrenheit is naturally better-suited to reporting and describing the weather, in everyday experience.

1. 0F is not "extreme" nor "should not spend much time outdoors". Dress warm and it's fine.

2. It's much the same for Celsius. -30C is cold, 0C is freezing, 10C is cool, 20C is warm, 30C is hot, 40C is very hot.

I would love it if we would switch to metric. As much as I like to say I am 6' tall rather than 1.8288 m, it would be a hell of a lot easier.

When I am filling out the equation for medication for one of my patients, it's just one more step I have to do. Yeah, it doesn't take much to divide by 2.2, but me and math already have a tenuous relationship and when seconds count I do not want to deal with yet another set of numbers to screw me up.

gm: The biggest problem with converting would be having to retool the entire country and organizations that currently use the metric system would have to reengineer all of their things, and for the most part that is everyone and everything made in America. Even NASA would have to reengineer all of their stuff.

But in the process, a) you can now sell your stuff around the world without worrying about making a second line of goods, b) you can now buy stuff from all around the world without making them make a second line of goods.

bmb_789: Hardest part about converting to metric is that nobody has any concept of the measurements. If I say something is 680 mm long, to get a picture of that length, you have to convert it back to inches. And if I say something weighs 25 Newtons, well, everybody's pretty much lost (including myself).

I would hope they are lost because it is pretty much nonsense. You are adding in a meaningless constant value - i.e. the gravitational constant (meaningless for general usage anyway, in space, analysing a car crash or fighter pilots or whatever the assumption breaks down). So ~2.5kg is a more appropriate way of describing the same weight (well, mass technically for the same reasons as in the previous aside).

/I think that is all correct, long time since doing much physics

Why? Everyone should know that 212F = boiling as much as 100C = boiling. The same thinking applies to both pertaining to elevation, impurities, flux, etc.

Nah, I have to say that, regardless of what I'm "used to," a 0-100 range (for describing everyday outdoor temperatures) seems more naturally intuitive than a -30 - +40 range.

Nothing wrong with Celsius. I use it all the time (except for, as I said, describing the weather).

The thing about temperature, is that the best argument for converting to metric (i.e. the ease of conversion between units as powers-of-ten) doesn't really apply to temperature. How often do people need to use kilo-degrees and milli-degrees?

In fact, you could probably make a better argument for the need to measure time in a metric, base-10 system (given the tendency of people to break units of time down into sub-units and sub-sub-units), than for the need to measure temperature in such a way. And yet I rarely see people arguing for metric time.

2009-07-01 07:13:17 PM
Frankly the unit of measure can be arbitrary so long as its accurate.
A rational person would probably not give a damn. They'll use whatever their familiar with and convert as needed. Both systems are taught in the US and many people found metric awkward in many situations.

...Obviously this means the government must MANDATE a change and spend millions of dollars in the process. At least until the next big fad in measurement comes along.
Then we'll have a fuss between English metric and Chinese metric or whatever, and we get to do this all over again.

Snarfangel: RminusQ: Snarfangel: There are better number bases than base 10 (I like balanced senary, but duodecimal is okay), and better base units than earth quadrants and volumes of water (I like Planck units).

Why not just leapfrog the French and come up with a cooler measurement system?

This quoted phrase has five google results. The first two are FARK comments by you (in fact, impressively, this one is the second), the third is your blog, and the last two are Digg. What in the hell IS balanced senary?

Senary is base-6. Balanced notation uses positive and negative values. The most common version is balanced ternary (base three), which uses -1, 0, and 1 instead of 0,1, and 2.

Balanced senary is a system that would use symbols for -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, and 3. One nice thing about it is that it makes truncation the same as rounding, and you can even make the rules so it uses banker's rounding (round half even, though there are other names).

/another nice feature is that merchants wouldn't keep making prices end in .99. I hate pennies.

Surely all balanced notations have the truncation/rounding property. So why senary particularly?
