Way to buckle down on motorists...

2009-06-30 10:00:31 PM
Perfect example of the slippery slope. It got passed, with the assurance that it would be a secondary offense. With a little time, it gets chipped away.

2009-06-30 10:03:31 PM
Yep, NYS did the same thing.

2009-06-30 10:12:01 PM
Click it or you will get a ticket. Casselberry police proved it Tuesday morning. More than 100 drivers and their passengers were caught on the road without a seatbelt and drove away with a $100 ticket.

Strapped for cash?

2009-06-30 10:13:13 PM
Minnesota just passed that seat belt law recently too.

2009-06-30 10:13:58 PM
I really honestly thought this had passed the first time they tried it over 10 years ago. Funny.

2009-06-30 10:15:57 PM
Arkansas is doing the same thing. It's been probably 15 years since it became a secondary offense.

I think it's pretty stupid too, backed up by completely made up numbers.

It's more about revenue than anything.

2009-06-30 10:16:19 PM
And personal injury compensation for those too stupid to wear a seatbelt should be paid out for what reason exactly?

We've had similar rules in Australia for years now - no seatbelt will earn you demerit points. The death toll plummetted, and its now at the point where most people feel strange not wearing a seat belt when in a car.

I hate a hell of a lot of the traffic laws in this country, but the law against seatbelts is not one of them.

2009-06-30 10:17:07 PM
Just put the damn belt on and we wouldn't have these farking laws.

If you're going to permanently injure yourself or your passengers, then the public who is going to end up footing the bill for your care has a stronger financial self-interest than you interest in keeping your belly free-jiggling.

And as everyone is keen to point out, STATES RIGHTS!!! STATES RIGHTS1!!! MAJORITY RULES!!! NO INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS WHICH CAN SUBORDINATE THE WILL OF THE MAJORITY!!! STATES RIGHTS!!!

phlegmmo: Strapped for cash?

If they don't issue these tickets their budget could buckle under the strain.

2009-06-30 10:18:12 PM
I wonder how much insurance companies had to pay to get the provision in. But then again, those are the best investments for them, getting 1000 times the return.

2009-06-30 10:18:39 PM
Minnesota is our new favorite state. At least none of their Senators wear diapers.

/Franken, FTW

2009-06-30 10:19:12 PM
it's been a primary in Georgia here for years. Cops here love the excuse it gives them to stop cars and get a quick peek inside...

2009-06-30 10:19:25 PM
Seriously, if you're not smart enough to wear one, Darwin should get you by forfeit.

2009-06-30 10:19:57 PM
They made it a big point in my drivers ed class to point out that "troopers rarely have to unbuckle a dead body"

/used to drive a jeep. Seat belts are NOT optional when you can fall out.

2009-06-30 10:22:20 PM
That particular revenue enhancement has been in MI for years now.
Safety my ass. They want to improve safety they should go after the old farks doing 55 in a 70 in the left lane.

2009-06-30 10:22:46 PM
Here is an idea, follow the law. More so because it's a simple law. I'm all for complaining about Pot and other freedom based things. But, when it comes to this it's pretty simple. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT.

/the end.

Feh, Jersey did that years ago. They got the original law passed by promising it would never be a primary, then 5 years later upped it to primary.
Then the handheld cell phone ban.
Now they want a law making it illegal to touch a GPS unit while driving.

So I now have to just rely on teenage drivers and motorcyclists for my new organs? Haven't the politicians heard about the waiting time on organ donor lists?

B...b...but the slippery slope is a logical fallacy! It can't possibly be of any predictive value when dealing with illogical governments!

The underlined part is the only thing you needed to say. The rest is merely extraneous rationalization.

Meh I'm so use to wearing a seat belt that this wouldn't have any sort of repercussion on me if I lived in Florida.

Ya know those pesky red light cams? Meet Seatbelt Cam.

2009-06-30 10:30:01 PM
Meh. I started wearing a seat-belt a couple of decades ago when it became mandatory on military bases (I was stationed at Fort Gordon, GA).
It got to be a habit.

Those who don't are like folks who ride motorcycles without helmets: Future organ donors.

2009-06-30 10:31:27 PM
Remember to paint the silver part of the seat belt with a neutral non-reflective thin layer of paint. That should prevent it from flashing visibly in the sun.

2009-06-30 10:31:55 PM
I personally know 3 people that would have died had they been wearing a seatbelt and one the I'm positive died because she was wearing one. I'm neutral on the issue. I don't wear one, it's not law in GA if you drive a truck (yet). But when my mom flipped her Blazer in a curve that a dump truck lost half a load of gravel, I'm pretty sure her wearing the seatbelt allowed her to walk away with only a few aches and bruises. My beef is Gov cramming more laws into my life and claiming it's not about revenue, it's about saving lives. Hockey Pucks!

2009-06-30 10:32:21 PM
If the radio ads are to be believed, a driver in MN can be ticketed if a passenger (even in the back) is unbuckled. What the crap is that?

Er. the first line in my post:

Just put the damn belt on and we wouldn't have these farking laws.

Personal responsibility includes choices about seat belts and food choices. If you want to be Fatty McPlumperson (and who doesn't) then buy your own health insurance. And as far as national health care, Arizona, the state that wants to make sure Arizonans have no option to purchase a federal insurance policy, offers insurance to small businesses and individual contractors. Arizona does this because no private insurance company would write policies. BTW, that was a Democratic governor who did that. And there are plenty of true-blue conservatives who buy their insurance via the State of Arizona.

2009-06-30 10:33:21 PM
Arkansas started this today. Before it was a secondary offense. Now moved up to primary. Still if you are over 21 you can ride a motorcycle without a helmet!!!

/never rides without full face helmet
//Im ugly enough already

2009-06-30 10:33:44 PM
As a Floridian who is an avid seatbelt user, I fully support advancing this traffic offense to the primary level.

Now, let's bring back mandatory helmet wear for those silly motorcyclists. I have no need of spare parts from those dumbass organ donors.

/We should have allowed kids under 18 to not wear helmets on motorcycles too.
//Their organs would be healthier and last far longer than those tub-o boomers.

You'd be surprised. The politicians in Oregon tried to pass a industry crippling tax on beer even though Oregon is home to a large number of very successful microbreweries. Its all about the money.

Florida allows motorcyclists to ride without a helmet. I've seen two bikers go down and bounce their unprotected melons off the curb. If they didn't die, they've probably got some serious head trauma. Stupid farks. Should need a law.
[dot dot dot]

Y'know, I actually heard a cogent explanation of that one time from a biker. His take was, approximately: "If you aren't wearing a helmet and you bite it at speed, you are going to die. If you _are_ wearing a helmet and you bite it at speed, you're going to end up paralyzed from the neck down. Shouldn't that really be a matter of individual choice?"

I had to admit he had a point.

I'm texting this from my motorcycle on Tamiami Trail without wearing a helmet (legally) so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Maybe we should just let Darwin sort it out.

You know, I think there's too much vodak in this drink.

Illinois is the same way but the seat belt law is still secondary, for now.

5Nickels: I personally know 3 people that would have died had they been wearing a seatbelt and one the I'm positive died because she was wearing one.

Anecodatal evidence is anecdotal.

I prefer raw statistics.

You're far more likely to get farked up NOT wearing a seat belt than you are when you are wearing a seat belt.

/whenever I see an accident report where three people in the car survive, and one dies, I wonder, "gee, was that person unlucky"?

Then I read the article and it's always the same phrase "$name was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle".

2009-06-30 10:36:19 PM
I actually don't feel right riding without a seatbelt, so meh.

See, I have a problem with your thinking. Please tell me how not wearing a seatbelt automatically makes one an organ donor?

You just made a very stupid post since many wrecks happen in rush hour at speeds less than 20 mph. And you said it was mandatory on base. Isn't base speed like 17 mph? No way in hell your getting that farked up even in a head on.

2009-06-30 10:38:01 PM
Meh.
The first time I drove my jeep without a top, I made an aggressive turn, and found myself hanging on to the steering wheel to stay inside.
Seat belts became a standard with me.
Now, it feels weird to drive without them.
I have to consciously decide not to put them on to move cars in the driveway.

/still wouldn't like a ticket because I didn't wear one.

2009-06-30 10:39:11 PM
I live in Florida and I disapprove of this on two grounds, Darwinism and libertarianism. I'll wear mine, but you should have the right to make your own choice. We need to thin the heard out somehow right?

Shoot, if you want to strap your baby seat on the roof and get on I-4, I could care less.

Obviously this is a money grab. This is the new state tax just like toll roads, the lottery, the increased "sin" taxes and tourism zone taxes.

2009-06-30 10:40:45 PM
TheShavingofOccam123: Just put the damn belt on and we wouldn't have these farking laws.

I do and so do most everyone else in the state yet we still have the laws. The point is that it is asinine to try and claim its about safety when everyone knows the point is more revenue. People will die more often if they don't wear seatbelts and everyone knows it. If they choose not to then what's it to you ? In the same respect.... People will die sooner if they eat cheeseburgers everyday....What's it to you ?

2009-06-30 10:42:35 PM
give me doughnuts: Those who don't are like folks who ride motorcycles without helmets: Future organ donors.

The organ donor problem is such an easy one to fix, it just requires a politician with an ounce of a backbone. Make everyone an organ donor by default, and then allow an opt-out system so people who have a problem with this can happily get out. The 4% of people who feel strongly about opting out will, the rest of us will be too lazy to care. Everyone wins.

Why isn't this happenning?
