I wonder if this was allowed by his union contract.

2009-06-30 11:15:29 PM
Brass balls indeed.

2009-06-30 11:16:12 PM
Wow, 'ginomous' brass ones is no understatement.

2009-06-30 11:16:21 PM
That doesn't even look like a safe harness they made for him..

Huge gonads that guy must have..

2009-06-30 11:16:47 PM
Kudos to the worker and the life jacket

Low head dams are no joke peeps. That's a good way to drown in a hurry.

That guy is great.

2009-06-30 11:23:23 PM
Oh... brass BALLS. I was wondering how he'd do that with brass tiddies.

2009-06-30 11:24:17 PM
Anyone in IA available to send a case of beer to that construction crew?

2009-06-30 11:24:35 PM
Cool guy. Gives props to his crane operator and other workers first. Very cool.

Don't try to steal this construction worker's thunder, Mr. Manly Man.

2009-06-30 11:27:19 PM
is it even possible to swim out of that situation? Like if you swim along the bottom. I've heard of kayakers drowning in damns half the size of that one

monthos: That doesn't even look like a safe harness they made for him..

Yah, it just looks like a piece of webbing that he's sitting in. Wow.

Greek: Anyone in IA available to send a case of beer to that construction crew?

Hell, I'd chip in to get them Westvleteren.

What exactly is there to point out?

Hero is right. What a brave man.

I'm always surprised by people who don't want to wear life preservers on rivers and lakes. I'm a great swimmer, but that won't save me in really bad weather or against a strong enough current... or a dam.

2009-06-30 11:29:33 PM
Now I see your follow-up... :)

FTFM.

"I happened to have the harness on. That's all I've got to say." I love this man. I'm in Northern Missouri -- contributions for me to take him and the crew a case of beer?

Welcome to Iowa.

This is how we roll.

Or why people smoke, drive without a seatbelt, binge drink, pay attention to politics.

That's a great human being right there. He wouldn't take credit. He's brave for rigging up and getting in there. The crane operator deserves credit for the precision with which he ran the boom. Props to you guys all around.

Unfortunately, OSHA is here with a $10,000 fine for unauthorized riders on the crane.

I'd read that too. But you may have just caused me to wake the baby...

Well played!! :)

Johnny Swank: Low head dams are no joke peeps. That's a good way to drown in a hurry.

I wonder if this one had two or three "DAM AHEAD: MANDATORY PORTAGE/EXTREME DROWNING HAZARD" like most of the ones I see do.

Either way, that construction worker is my new hero.

2009-06-30 11:42:03 PM
I'm sure the crane was really there for his balls.

Vohnkar: is it even possible to swim out of that situation? Like if you swim along the bottom. I've heard of kayakers drowning in damns half the size of that one

There's always a chance, due to unknown factors like a tree over the dam, or a break in the dam itself, which could cause either an eddy or a strong downstream flow, but lowhead dams are known as "drowning machines" in the boating community for a reason. We've got one around here that gets one every now and then, and it's not a bad one. The one in TFA is a nasty, nasty one.

socodog: Unfortunately, OSHA is here with a $10,000 fine for unauthorized riders on the crane.

OSHA has no great human beings. They are leeches. They are the union organizers who couldn't get into a union shop. They are the lawyers who give other lawyers a bad name. They are the pigs that explain why Islam and Judaism forbid pork. They are the STD's of regulation. They are the onions in the chocolate.

Could someone send this guy to SC to help save our asses from our obviously gone-over-the-edge governor?

Humble guy. He should never have to buy his own beer again.
