If local communities can't even afford to pay for a once a year fireworks display, you know it's just plain bad news all over the country. that's why I think we're in serious economic trouble. it's getting to the point where we can no longer even pretend that we're out of the woods yet.

I don't know, why don't you axe my butt? On second thought, no don't do that.

As long as Newport doesn't axe them this year, I'm good. It's my sister's wedding, we've been told where to watch the fireworks from at the reception.

\of course, my town's fireworks usually end up being in the middle of august sometime because of weather....

Now now, if there's a choice between fireworks that cheer people up or extra guards at the local elementary school to make sure one of those hoodlums isn't carrying a water pistol when they by god better place extra guards.

As a Loyalist, I celebrate Independence Day by reading aloud key moments from Parliament discussions regarding the colonists' repeated incursions against Indians and the French, causing His Majesty to deploy ever more sentries to keep the peace, all at the expense of the average Londoner. All this "taxation without representation" bosh would have been unnecessary had the colonies simply abided by His Majesty's request to stop the expansive incursions into new territory. But no. Instead, we Loyalists had to stand by while the rebels continued their pillage of His Majesty's purse.

This July 4, I will wear my red coat and tri-corner hat, wave the Union Jack and denounce all those ersatz patriots as they drink awful beer and set off playtime explosives like unmanaged children.

/bloody Yanks!

One of those mush mouth black broads at McDonalds the other day:

"I'm surry for the wait"
"You're what"
"Surry for the wait"
"Do you mean sorry?"
"That's what I said sir"

/Not racist, one of the most well spoken broads I know is black
//Why do we have to explain that we're not racists for things like this?

Criticizing the Yanks for aggressive expansionism, and mistreating native populations? Pot, meet kettle.

I'll worry about the economy when people stop crossing over the border into Indiana to buy the illegal fireworks.

I cannot believe that things are so bad that they can continue to throw money away with things like chipsealing roads yet they cannot afford a 10 minute display. I suspect there's a tremendous amount of embezzlement and outright theft going on right now that's being blamed on "the economy".

Vancouver, WA couldn't get a corporate sponsor this year. They normally put on the biggest show west of the Mississippi every year. Despite the grand public show, the whole town normally sets off enough personal fireworks to blow up a medium-sized nation...so this year they're probably going to "up the ante" on the personal fireworks to a dangerous new level.

I don't think I've ever seen an entire city of pyromaniacs before. These people are frightening.

I don't think so, that kettle looks a little too nigardly to be associated with the pot

Geez, I look around and think to myself, "We Americans really are the uncouth sons and daughters of Europe's debtors, religious nuts, ideologues, second sons, bastard sons, criminals, opportunists, etc."

And then I think I should immigrate to Europe. Then I remember my swank lake house and the Battle of the Somme and Auschwitz and all the Muslims in Europe and all the taxes there and think, . . . I really shouldn't drink beer and post on Fark.

if they looked like that.... cool.

I think I've seen 3 fireworks shows in 25 years that haven't happened above the cloud layer.

This is short-sighted. Communities across the country have found that bringing everyone to the local park or football stadium to watch a show is much safer than having people put on their own "shows" in their homes and yards, to the amusement of neighbors and FIREMEN!

I shot fireworks for the largest display company on the West Coast for 20 years, and we never had a mishap or injury on a single show. It's just a solid municipal investment.

Ah, typical, a few idiots act irresponsibly and so the folks in charge fark it up for everybody else.

Why is dealing with the troublemakers such a far-out concept these days?

Here we used to pay for it with donations collected by firefighters standing in certain intersections. They raised 20K+ in only a couple weeks. Then the city passed a panhandling ordinance and determined it included the firefighters. The city is now kicking in some. Don't know how the collection jars at area restaurants are doing. Used to be a really good show for a small town, complete with occasional oopsies (don't load roman candles upside down and igniting a large hydrogen balloon is a very bad idea)

Even Seattle felt the pinch - they lost their sponsor for the "Fourth of Jul-Ivars". I was very sad about this, Ivar's has been sponsoring 4th of July since my parents were young!

Guess some folks will just have to make do with what they can buy. It is easy to convert things like piccolo petes into something resembling an M80. Drop em into a bottle of water for extra whistling fun.

Unless you live 10 miles out in BFE, seems like any city always has the one person on every block lighting off the good stuff.

My little town (pop. 6,247) had a nice 30-minute fireworks show last Saturday night. And there are a ton more going on this weekend around the area, including the huge one at the major city.

Eventually people will realize that all the pretty colors come from the inclusion of various metals, most of them so called "heavy metals" which are toxic. Chromium, Cadmium, Barium, etc. They are blowing that stuff all over the place and nobody seems to care.

I'm really torn on this one. The kids have already started two fires this week. Lost one new garage and one old tree near my house. Between them and the guys who build their own bombs, I've been treated to enough fireworks already.

On the other hand, I like going and watching the big community funded dispaly every year at the airport. You pay a price at the gate that lets you get close enough to feel the concussions, then they pass the hat for next years display. The more they make the bigger the show. The city only pays for a few hours of traffic control.

You stole my thunder with the "Change" thing.
I guess it's a good thing the country is broke. He doesn't love America anyway. He's too busy blaming all the worlds problems on US anyway. So it's no skin off his assets.

Get used to the "CHANGE"!!! It's not going anywhere soon.

we feel jaded and very disappointed that a celebration of what our Founding Fathers worked so hard to give us is squandered by those who collect and spend our tax dollars
