If it weren't for Bush's ignorant "Axis of Evil" speech this revolution might have happened years ago. Tough talk is not always the way to go, Republicans.

We are "not supposed" to get interfere with other countries.

It is difficult to stand back and watch or be told what is happening in Iran. They live in a very different world from us. Certain freedoms we take for granted are not even allowed there.

But we have to stay out of it. Ahmadinejad has constantly blamed the "western" cultures for causing problems and this was when Obama had not said anything or done anything to provoke him.

Haven't we learned anything from Iraq? We should never have gone there and looked what happened. We're stuck. We gave our enemies more reasons to hate us. Lots of people have died with little to show for it.

We are not the "World Police" and it is about time we prove that to our neighbors.

He's putting the smackdown now because he has nothing to lose. He was (wisely) waiting until Ahmadinejad played the "OMG TEH RIOTS ARE AMERICUNS FAULT" card before saying, "Y'know what? We were gonna stay out of it, but if you want to throw down, we'll throw down. BTW Mahmoud, FARK YOU!!!!"

It's the appropriate response and the one I've been waiting for. I knew it would happen sooner or later -- just a matter of when. Obama knows that the Iranian people don't buy that tired bullshiat from Ahmadi anymore, so now he can freely condemn it all he wants.

GaryPDX: That was the only chance in 30 years to have done something for these people..uggggh. There won't be a chance for these freedom loving people for maybe decades to come. We could have done something more.

Oh, for fark's sake.

What is it with the right-wing in this country and their need to treat the rest of the world like children who can't take care of themselves? Does it stem from the same patronizing attitude that you're always right all the damned time?

I realize that you would enjoy nothing more than watching the United States military steal all of the glory from this budding revolution, totally reducing any sacrifices made by the Iranian people into trivialities and destroying any hope of a pro-West Iranian government. The Basij beating fellow Iranians is a hell of a lot different than the US accidentally leveling an apartment complex with a cruise missile.

This is their fight. Let them earn it.

Right-wingers are awfully fond of criticizing government handouts, like welfare ("Get a job!") or the economic bailouts. Right? When it comes to foreign policy, however, they want to spend even more money for one of the biggest possible handouts you could ever give a country: a completely new government. Instead of expecting them to work for their own freedom, you'd rather hand it to them and expect them to appreciate it. Seriously, what the hell? Where's that ever-popular "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" attitude?

I couldn't be happier that so many people in this thread aren't in charge of foreign policy. I really don't care how big your dicks are, or how much bigger you wish they were.

backdoor_nut_sucker: 3_Butt_Cheeks: backdoor_nut_sucker: Mentat: backdoor_nut_sucker: The prize, I'm guessing, would be a truly Islamic democracy in the same way that the US is a truly Christian democracy.

The US is a secular republic, not a Christian democracy.

good joke.

He's right. The US is a secular state.

No, he's wrong. That's what the US calls itself, but that doesn't make it true. Ask an Arab or Muslim nation what kind of republic the US is.

A United States created as a secular republic on Muslim principles would look very very different to what you have there now. It can't help but be Christian, or even more specifically Protestant. It was founded by Protestants and has been maintained by Protestants ever since. The Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Pagans and Shintoists, haven't had a look in. The only group who have even got close was the Catholics with JFK, and look where that got him.

I really am not trying to troll here, BTW. I'm just calling it as I see it, and am perfectly willing to be corrected.

Since it doesn't get any press, in 2005 Khamenei issued a fatwa stating that the development and storage of nuclear weapons is not compatible with Islam. He wasn't the first, nor the last, cleric to issue such a fatwa.

In a nutshell, Iran may not have a nuclear weapons program, ever, when the current regime, if not government, gets shoved out.

Well, Obama is a wildcard. Amadingleberry knew what he was getting with Bush. Obama comes out all "peace love dope!" and then starts talking smack.

Plus, if Amadinawhackjob is any student of history, he knows that most of the past presidents of the 20th century that got us into wars were Democrats: Wilson, FDR, Truman, Johnson... might not be a track record he wants to mess with.

Some people give insulting nicknames to individuals they don't like, and sometimes these nicknames are phonetically similar to the person's actual name. Are you comfortable with that explanation, or do I need to add a picture of Ric Romero to really drive home the obviousness?

Mrs. Merkel said the international community must help to identify victims who were beaten, arrested or killed by the Iranian government.

"We will not forget," she said through a translator. "Iran can't count on the world community turning a blind eye."

Chancellor Merkel can't speak English? I could have sworn I once saw her in a video clip with GWB speaking English. She was swearing up a storm, yelling "get your farking hands off me, you retarded dolt!".

The international community (and the U.S. in particular) should
be quietly working on creating a database of any images of the
government thugs who are beating and killing Iranian citizens,
so that if/when the people of Iran are finally free, those thugs
can be rounded up and dealt with in the proper manner.

How arrogant are all these right wingers thinking only the holy US of A is capable of "giving" democracy and freedom to others? No, sir, the Iranians couldn't possibly fight their own battle here to create a system of government of their own choosing. Poor little persians - they must be so new to the world stage. (sarcasm off)

Seriously, the Iranian people only asked that the world hear them and help them keep communication going when the government cracks down. They did NOT ask us to come in guns a blazing and make things worse for us. They did NOT ask Obama to be their personal savior, and he has respected that. This is about the Iranian people, not the USA. They know their country, their culture, and the politics better than outsiders. They will win their own freedom back; it is the only way to true liberty.

StrangeQ: docweasel: No, obambi is trying to save face after Iran made him look like a farking pussy by rubbing his nose in his own shiat. The idea we should talk to ANYONE currently running Iran was a farking stupid idea when Hussein Obama suggested it during the campaign and it's even stupider now. The US looks weak and the Arab world has lost the respect GWBush took years building.

Obama wants credit for the Iran revolution? It will cause lefty heads to explode, but Bush deserves 100% of the credit for the rejection of a fixed vote (which is actually normal in all Arab countries) because Iranians can look next door and see a functioning democracy THANKS TO GWB and it lets them know what IS possible. In the years to come, it will spread beyond Lebanon and Iran. And Bush will deserve the credit.

The sooner Obama is impeached or somehow removed from office the better. He is ruining the country domestically and internationally. He cannot be allowed to destroy us for 4 years. He must be removed.

What are you smoking, and more importantly, where can I get some?

While a bit over the top with his condemnation of Obama here, docweasel is basically correct. Creating democratic institutions in Iraq and Afghanistan, even half-assed ones, still proves to the people of the Middle East that "strong man" dictatorships need not be the norm.

If the Iranian revolution succeeds here, it will be largely due to, and a vindication of, the Bush foreign policy.

If Obama was really tough he'd read the same speech and then make a big gesture and then all the US troops in Iraq would abandon their posts and line up on the Iranian border, and then we'd reactivate all the troops and get them back over to the middle east, then also get conscription in the US because we'd need more troops, and then the war machine would fire up -- and then we'd have more planes and bombs, and toss our kids at the Iranian kids in the protests when they throw army uniforms on them and toss them in the front lines.

That'd show them. That would be tough.
