Topane: Congrats! New here, aren't you? Go lurking!

On th subject: It sounds like a hoax, but then again, Fischer is crazy enough to do it. Although... moveing all pawns one square forward in the opening? Well, he supposedly did beat Short with it...

2001-09-10 09:22:12 AM
Sure. They probably say that whenever they loose. "Must have been Bobby Fischer! did you see those weird opening moves?"
And when a girl turns them down for a date, it's because "She must be a lesbian." Not because they're rabid chess geeks.
No offense to chess geeks out there, but some of you guys shoud: "pawn-takes-mirror," just every now and then.

2001-09-10 09:27:20 AM
Well, apparently, it's someone with some knowledge of the game. Nigel Short is not in the habit of losing too much...

2001-09-10 09:37:02 AM
Of course if it really is BF, it makes sense that he would be developing his own book of opening moves. Computers and chess geeks are usually lost without their memorized, standard opening moves.

2001-09-10 09:38:46 AM
what he doesnt know is, this mysterious player is just some 12 year old inputting the moves into a computer chess game

:P

Wow, Fischer is a bad ass. I love brilliant eclectic troubled geniuses. I wonder if he farks, or maybe CommyFarks.

2001-09-10 09:52:48 AM
This is a great story, he really is a bad ass.

2001-09-10 09:54:23 AM
I might have to see if I can get into that site. Who knows, maybe I can get my ass whooped by Fischer.

2001-09-10 09:57:11 AM
Should be

I felt similarly about the "News" tag when this appeared yesterday. This could easily be the confused ramblings of a hack at the end of his career, and yet The Times ran it as a front page story, with a top page cover in in t he supplement.

Dyslexic? Bone idle more like...

Wouldn't you prefer a nice game of chess?

No I want to play global thermal nuclear warfare!

2001-09-10 10:18:24 AM
quite a paranoid in any case

2001-09-10 10:20:40 AM
are you sure it wasn't some 12 year old in the Star Trek 3d chess club???

2001-09-10 10:29:31 AM
That's why you have to play Blitz with unknown competitors.
You don't have enough time to cheat with a computer chess program.

2001-09-10 11:03:02 AM
Rounded Bits, geeks are not lost without standard, memorized openings. You display an horrendous ignorance of the game.

I am Bobby Fischer!!!

damn the secret is out

2001-09-10 11:22:06 AM
If this is Bobby Fischer, he's not going to that site anymore now.

2001-09-10 01:13:55 PM

school you in the ways of moving pawns i will, yes!

2001-09-10 02:02:19 PM
Fischer is probably the greatest chess player who ever lived, but what a bizarre example of a human being he is otherwise.

2001-09-10 02:08:45 PM
I don't want to ruin the fantasy here kids, but it was actually me that was playing those guys. I have been spenind the last 6 months perfecting the "make shiat up as you go" offense.

thanks

"You display an horrendous ignorance of the game."

You should see some of the four-year-olds I play against. They're pathetic. Now go comb your hair.

You know what irony is? People who post messages on fark that think other people are geeks.

Did you morons even see the moves for the game Short played against this anonymous player? He did begin with all pawns moving one square forward, even moving the king to the near center of the board. And the stranger still won.
Only a genius could have done it.

2001-09-10 02:30:42 PM
Anyone who would post to a chess thread on Fark, is whithout a doubt a qualified geek.

And here I am.

2001-09-10 02:54:58 PM
Is there a place that shows all the moves over the entire game? I'd be interested to see that.

2001-09-10 04:07:45 PM
The mystery player requested Short log in as an anonynous user so that records would not be kept. Nigel Short is a very good chess player. He couldn't have gotten spanked like that by more than a dozen people (think Kasparov).

Plus, among championship players, styles are unique and distinguishable, like a person's handwriting, or a morse code operator's "fist."

Slashdot has some really good commentary on this issue yesterday (I know, good, sane comments from slashdot? I was suprised too).

Disclaimer: I am not even a decent chess player, I suck. Everything that I said was an amalgam of information that I have gathered over a few years of extremely casual chess playing, and reading since this story came out.

I saw BobbyFischer404 playing at zone.msn.com. I tried to get him to play, but he kept asking me things like "asl?" and "u cyber?"

Seriously, I don't know which are worse - the guys who try to pick up chicks in the chess rooms on zones, or the guys who try it in the checkers rooms.

2001-09-10 05:24:58 PM
Ah! no wonder I never win at internet chess!

2001-09-10 06:01:43 PM
Imagine stumbling across him playing Yahoo! chess. I'm shooting about 60% wins, 20% draws, and have been royally spanked a few times there. Maybe Mr. Fischer has been the one kicking my ass, I'd certainly feel better.

Whatever happened to GrandMaster Flash?

2001-09-10 08:18:36 PM
Bobby Fischer 1s a camp1ng l3wz3r

Actually, this is SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY cool. The idea of realizing after a game that your opponent is one of the most famous grandmasters of chess is the sort of thing I've seen serious fiction written about. The idea that you might find him lurking about in some anonymous room- *shivers*. Really makes you wonder who else you might have met online

2001-09-10 09:13:08 PM
I didn't know GrandMaster Flash played chess!

2001-09-10 09:45:15 PM

Chess player do have a strange spelling problem -- They abbreviate "knight" with an "N"...Good Knight.
