Yahoo News:

"Sanford told The State he was alone on the trip to Argentina. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.

Trying to make such a drive could frustrate a weekend visitor to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Avenida Costanera is the only coastal road, and it's less than two miles long. Reaching coastal resorts to the south requires a drive of nearly four hours on an inland highway with views of endless cattle ranches. To the north is a river delta of islands reached only by boat."

He's toast.

Look, if he has cancer, he can just tell people, many cancers are treatable and can be forced into remission with good medical care and follow up.

While the man does have a right to privacy; If he has a very bad or dangerous case of cancer, we're going to know eventually especially if he has to have chemo. I can only imagine coming out as battling cancer would make his supporters even more hard-line for him.

Considering all of that common sense speculation....

I'm gonna go with, burying a dead hooker in some random Appalachian forest.

There's also a big drug/alcohol rehab center outside Minneapolis. I'm blanking on the name, but a friends of mine dried out there (his father said the only good thing about it was that it was close to the Mall of America, but his father is an asshole).

stevetherobot: Here's what I think happened.

Somebody kidnapped his sons and told him that if he wants to see them again he'll do exactly what they say. So his wife is waiting anxiously by the phone for the word that their sons are safe. He is holed up in a seedy hotel room somewhere, familiarizing himself with a sniper rifle and awaiting further instructions.

His wife didn't respond in a manner that would reflect that. It was more like "I don't know where the damn hell he went, and whenever he gets back, there will be divorce papers waiting."

FOUR HOURS!?!?

Actually, that's nothing at all. That's a daily commute for some people in SoCal.

"Mark Sanford Argentina gay sex weekend" is now a trending topic on Twitter.

(OK, just "Argentina".)

There's not a peep from Argentinian news on this yet. If you speak Spanish there's La Nacion (new window) and El Clarin (new window). There's also news.google.com.ar for articles written in Spanish (localized to Argentina).

dkny: my money is on cancer or some incurable disease.

That would be awesome.

Care to elaborate? He's got a year left in office... in which time how will he be able to bring about your untimely demise, financial ruin, or other terrible suffering? Considering that you're in Canada and he's the governor of a small, rural, fairly unimportant state in ANOTHER country... how does wishing early death on him count as "awesome?"

He's taken a beating this legislative session, people calling for his head for turning down his "share" of the inflation-stimulus package, and many just wishing he'd "take a hike." He did something weird and dropped off the grid for six days... like all of us wish we could do.

Guess what: as a SC taxpayer I wasn't worried in the slightest about my state being abandoned. Andre Bauer has the legal authority to fill Sanford's shoes had anything actually come up... which it didn't, shocker.

You know why? They don't give a sh*t... would you expect hoop-la from your local media if the governor of the Gujarati province came to visit? Because SC is way smaller and less important than that.

Why would there be? He's a virtual nobody to them.

He's having a news conference at the SC statehouse @2:00 p.m.

I can't imagine how this will make things better for him.

I'm not sure that disappearing for 4 or 5 days is that big of a deal. I's South Carolina, for God's sake. What, he might miss the opening day of the Palmetto Festival?
