I feel bad for him, seriously. What if it's an embarassing medical thing, or a family thing?

I think we need to give some privacy to politicians. They're like teenagers: you know they're up to ridiculous shiat, but it's usually better not to inquire.

Obdicut: I think we need to give some privacy to politicians.

Fine. As long as they aren't Family Values types. If my senators are getting frisky with each other, the contents of a vegetable drawer, the Boston College Hockey team, and a table leg, I don't care because they don't biatch about other people's personal lives.

Now if you'll excuse me, I just had a mental image of Senators Kerry and Kennedy naked, and I'm going to go raid the liquor cabinet until I blind myself.

Privacy is fine, but if you are in a position of importance it's not professional to just disappear without telling someone.

Listen, Newport, when is little brother going to get with the program w/r/t gay marriage? The rest of New England is waiting IMPATIENTLY for you people. For pity's sake CONNECTICUT has beaten you, and everyone hates those guys. Seriously, RI&PP, get with the program.

what_now: Listen, Newport, when is little brother going to get with the program w/r/t gay marriage?

We have a Republican governor and a powerful Catholic lobby. It's not a slam dunk here. Maybe next year? They're too busy fighting about prostitution, gambling, and our shiatty budget.

If they can write a bill and get it to a vote, it'll probably be veto-proof, but I don't think it's a priority for them right now.

It'll take awhile. Don't hold your breath waiting for us.

I live in Oregon, generally considered one of the more liberal states in the US, and we're nowhere near legalizing gay marriage.

So he went to the regional airport, hopped on a plane with a connecting flight in Atlanta? Or maybe he just took a quick flight to Atlanta, which makes... about as much sense as any of this.

This is actually interesting because if he needed to change planes in Atlanta, it means we can rule out that he's in any cities that have direct flights from Columbia airport because otherwise he'd probably just fly direct, right?

So, his final, post-Atlanta destination, was not... Ft. Lauderdale, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston-Intercontinental, Newark, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, New York-La Guardia, Detroit, Memphis, Chicago-O'Hare, Washington-Dulles, Charlotte, Philadelphia, or Washington-Reagan.

according to msnbc

Governor Sanford called to check in with his Chief of Staff this morning. It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten.

Given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered, the governor communicated to us that he plans on returning to the office tomorrow.
colbert was pretty funny tonight covering this. he replayed some of this clip (^video) where he calls sanford incredibly boring, and sanford emphasized how much he likes his solitude

I understand liking, wanting and needing solitude to recharge. I have no problem with that. Its screwing over the rest of state government (and your family) by going totally incommunicado that bothers me :-)

And given his party's obsession with rectitude and worshiping at the Family Altar, it's particularly....odd. This isn't just solitude. This is apparently flat-out lying to a lot of people who you theoretically trust implicitly.

And the pattern of these odd absences pretty much guarantees that -- absent the ghost of Ronald Reagan coming forth and testifying he and Sanford were getting together at seances -- them he's going to be the Brokeback Mountain Governor from now on.

2009-06-24 01:28:02 AM
I was watching CNN, and there was a reporter at the airport in Atlanta, standing outside of the truck Sanford used on Friday.

They actually reported that there was a sleeping bag in the back seat and a bag in the front with shorts. It looks like they're planning on waiting at the truck until someone comes to get it.

They also reported that, when they called his wife, she had no idea where he was, and she was taking care of her children.

Jumping in this late, but the SLED SUV may have been found in COLUMBIA, not Atlanta. (new window)

This is important, since catching a flight from Columbia to ATL, then renting a car to the start of the trail would make sense if you're coming from the midlands.

However, it still doesn't explain why a federal agent spotted him catching a flight at Hartsfield-Jackson.

I've got more issues with his story, but I'll bring those up later. Got an issue to deal with ATM.

It is actually within the realm of possibility that that Wikipedia thing could be true.

Very, very long odds, but he could be at the Mayo clinic because he has the cancer or something.

I'll feel like an asshole if it's true so I hope he's just hanging around airport bathrooms.

No, it starts in North Georgia, hence the ATL connection.

Well, it was supposed to be a surprise but now it's ruined. Gov. Sanford was planning to slip off to Atlanta to pick up some gifts for the kids from the Coke museum, go back to his truck and sleep in the sleeping bag (fiscally responsible!!), throw on some shorts for a healthy jog, and then shoot on over to Minneapolis and buy two tickets for him and his wife to catch A Praire Home Companion. See? All perfectly above board and explainable, a sweet surprise ruined by your dirty, naturally inquisitive minds.

A. What's more likely - someone pranking Wikipedia or a governor of a state going AWOL to keep a secret about his health?

B. There's a Mayo Clinic in Florida. It's a lot closer.

I assure you, if the background ever comes out on all this, it'll be something illicit, not something noble.
He is a Republican, after all.
