Riding the Blue Line home from the beautiful Slauson station here in Los Angeles in 20 minutes. Maybe I'll do a quick break inspection from the platform.

I don't know about DC, but around here only 25% of public transport is funded my user fees. If public transport needs more money they can double the fares.

you might be right about that. I wonder why the delay on servicing that train? I mean either way this is going to be a mess (legal mess, fiscal mess, political mess, take your pick) but I'd like to know what caused the crash.

I know that some of the Ayn Rand sites around the 'net are talking about this crash and trying to link it to certain events in Atlas Shrugged.

Breaking news on a broken brake for a train that broke a story earlier by breaking into another train that was then also broken.

Pretty shiatty design if all it took was 60 days outside scheduled maintenance to fail.

TFA: Also, a federal official said that the car was an older model, of a kind that Metro had been advised to replace because of concerns about how it would stand up in a collision. Metro did not do so, its leaders said, because they believed it would be too costly and complicated.

Looking back they'll realize it would have been cheaper and easier than what they're about to go through in the court system.

sober: and this is why public transportation will never catch on in america, outside of the elderly and homeless populations.

that's kind of a shame, since I think a decent public transportation system would do this country a world of good.

I know...weird, isn't it?

I've seen a few chain emails that mention it in passing, and the odd forum comment or three about it. Nothing by way of major articles yet but that could change at any minute.

It's always fun to try to guess how many lives lost fit into the DCMTA's cost/benefit analysis about replacing the older trains. I'm sure there is some memo somewhere noting that x number of lives can be lost before it would be cost worthy to start replacing crap trains.

/My worth is only about $3.72, though.

I remember when the Metro first opened. My highschool (JEB Stuart) actually let us skip 6th period to ride that first short section of the Blue Line. Under the river! how cool!

Went back for a vacation recently. It's been over 30 years, and I swear I rode in the exact same car.
