Reading the source of the image, it seems that 88 is used twice, which makes me wonder if there's a link to neo-Nazis

it's sad, really, that people oppose a perfectly good position for the sake of staking out opposition against someone they don't like.

Especially when it makes for fan-farking-tastic partisan bickering. I mean, really, this is amazing stuff.

I see this entire event as a good way to parse out the douchiest of the bags both on this board and in real life.

Heh, TheyCallMeC0WB0Y that's an amusing image. Although hey, weirdly, it reminds me. I still find the Anonymous V-masks a little startling. Where I grew up, it was (And I gather still is...) illegal to protest in a mask.

So, yeah, the 88 most likely stands for "Heil Hitler"

I think the conflict primarily revolves around the protestor's ability to remain non-violent. Rock throwing is going to get you shot and non-remorsefully at that. Peaceful protest that gets you shot is going to reverberate throughout the armed forces until they become the armed forces for the people.

Just my .02

Genesius: Thanks Tats. I don't have a whole lot of knowledge of the region, I've probably learned more about Iran and uprisings in the last week than I ever knew. I'm coming from a layman's POV & I didn't know how these conflicts ebb and flow; thanks for the explanation.

Are you guys kidding? He was saying last week that this was the final nail in the coffin, that these things would be over "shortly" because the police and army weren't getting involved. Now look at it. The steel heel of the Iranian government is going to break the neck of this revolution if it continues on as it has been -- anyone with a couple of brain cells to rub together can see that.

what_now: So, I'm emailing back in forth with a buddy of mine from Pakistan who is convinced this will end because the "business class" is not supporting the "students who grew up in downtown Tehran watching Baywatch".

He's been on vaca for the past week, so I think he's only seen limited news coverage, but he's the most knowledgeable guy about this part of the world I know IRL.

I'm trying to work on him, but he tells me that "this will be over in a week." and that I have a "white person's" perspective on this situation.

This kind of post might be shouted down, but FWIW that is a pretty common opinion, and there are plenty of analysts who are not convinced that the revolutionary movement has enough grassroots support to keep the momentum going. I am keeping an open mind but if anything these events just show that the days of theocracy are numbered. It's just not clear what that number IS right now.

after i posted information about Tor on my blog right when the election happened i have gotten quite a few hits from people in iran looking for information. that makes me feel good because it tells us that people there are hearing about Tor and are installing it to help stay safe online. Also the hits have been from all over Iran and not just Tehran which tells me that reports of major things happening outside of Tehran in places like Shiraz and Tabriz are true. Hopefully these new Iranian Tor users can share information from other parts of the country.

Fair enough. I've just not encountered that particular debate, myself, but I'll be the first to admit that I know very few Iranians, and those few all tend towards the same political viewpoints.

people are not so much jumping on the hate wagon, as slowly realizing that this "messiah" the democrats raved over is not all he was cracked up to be. since last year i've been warning people that obama is nothing more than a snake-oil salesman that had a pretty face and sly words. ever wonder why he hasn't taken a stand on this iran issue? it's because behind that pretty mocha face is nothing! he lacks complete substance over a wide multitude of issues! so while you get riled up at hate against your master, i'll sit back and enjoy the show with full knowledge that my vote didn't elect this hack.
