hipgnostic: BiblioTech: blastoh: brigid_fitch: Man he's pissed now.

"You've seen reports where my statements have been mis-translated, that I'm inciting the riots. You've heard reports about the CIA being involved. It gives you a sense of the narrative that the Iranian gov't wants to follow. I'm Pres. of the US and have my duties. They're members of Congress and have their duties."

Chuck: Will you spell out what the end result of this will be?

Obama: We don't know what the end result will be. I know you want an answer and you're on a 24-hour news cycle. I'm not.

PRICELESS!!

He's definitely winning points with me for stuff like that. And this is probably the first time Spock has ever been referenced in a White House press conference.

What is this reference of which you speak?

Getting info second hand so I can only summarize. It was a follow up to a follow up type thing with a reporter. Reporter told Obama not to go all Spock and logical on him. Obama came back with the hope that the Spock reference wasn't because of his ears.

Can anyone directly watching the speech give better summary?

I think it's pretty cool to watch something like this unfold and evolve in real time.

I refer, of course, to the Fark Iran thread subculture. It will make an interesting sociology study someday.

CanisNoir: Holy Crap, Obama is going to get HAMMERED; he just called what was happening in Iran as a "Debate".

Respect he had earned through this from me just decreased a bunch :(

This is how debate is done in Iran.

And it is, unfortunately, the actual 'debate' debate is happening well away from cameras and any psuedo-journalists. It's in the hallways of Qom and Tehran where the players are figuring out how to move on this whole situation.

Rafsanjani, I suspect, will be a significant feature.

Personae non gratae war?! Who does Iran think they are, Russia?

2009-06-23 01:43:02 PM

Tatsuma: On the International Front, the Government is getting angry with the international reaction. The Iranian Government issued a formal condemnation of the Secretary General of the UN for involving himself. They also declared that the French riots a couple of years ago were much more violent, yet they were never referred to as a crisis.

HAHA, because killing peaceful protesters is so similar to stopping non peaceful property destructive riots.. Was there anything the riots in France were actually demanding? Or were they just destroying things, I forget..

There is much talk about the presidential election having been rigged in President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's favour, but where is the evidence?

Opponents of Ahmadinejad find it incredible that, according to the official election results, the other candidates did not do well in their home provinces. Others say that the results were too quick to come out, and others still claim that the results of the ballot were too similar across the country to be true.

All this may constitute reasonable grounds for some suspicion but it does not amount to evidence, neither circumstantial nor hard evidence.

some people find it difficult to apply logic and reason. some are pleasantly happy to wallow in their own stupidity and close-mindedness when it comes to the extremely complicated tightrope of international politics, so i expect we'll be saying he can't for a long long time. maybe even in thread LXXVI.

Isn't pretty much accepted that the five main tweets relied upon during the fighting were Israeli plants? Same photos, same date for account each having only the other as friends?

Then of course, there is this Tatsuma fellow who is unabashedly an Israeli stooge.

Now, don't get me wrong. I support these young Iranians in their struggle but I do NOT like being manipulated by a foreign government whose only purpose is the destabilization of a regional competitor.

X1's Here: How many times we gotta say he CAN'T?

"Yes we can."

At this point, what is there to lose by answering the question in a similar matter to this.

"How do I see this playing out? I've always fought against oppression, it's why I became a community organizer in some of the most impoverished areas of Chicago. I would like to see the Iranians resolve this peacefully but the Regime has already decided that they were not going to take that path. I cannot in good conscience sit down with a Regime that so brazenly uses deadly force to keep their citizens from speaking freely. Therefore it is my sincerest wish that The Supreme Leader bows to his faith in God and declares that there will be another election with international observers present to guarantee that results will be a true reflection of the Iranian peoples wishes. Beyond that, any other result would be up to the people themselves. Next question?"

I'll admit, maybe I've missed something, but I thought the protesters and those in contact with them had, in fact, repeatedly requested that the United States not act or overtly choose sides in this matter.

THIS.

Obama can only say so much at this point. Coupled with his recent speech in Cairo, he's being viewed in a good light within the Middle East; he doesn't want to fark that up by in any matter being seen as supporting the situation in Iran.
