So don't watch, subby.

2009-06-22 03:04:07 PM
My biggest problem with this is that all the games are on at like 2:30 locally. I can't watch from work, and I already know who wins, so there's no reason to watch a rerun.

2009-06-22 03:04:09 PM
Goddamnit, give them all to Sky, I don't want to have to pay for another subscription.

ESPN bought La Liga for US audiences as well. They lost the Champions League to FSC, though.

Not a big soccer fan. BUT this has to be better than the talking heads who dominate the afternoon lineup.

Also, can you please bring back the Australian Rules Football while you're at it?

I dont get FSC on my dish
DO NOT WANT

I'll just keep watching on FSC, thanks.

Actually, these 46 are the matches Setanta captured in their bidding war with ESPN. A few days ago, Setanta didn't make a payment per their contract with the FA, so their games were put back on the auction block.

ESPN won this time. It's probably a bad thing for us in the States, because ESPN will most likely put them on their rubbish 360 internet channel. Pay for play bullshiat.

Harvey Birdman: I'll just keep watching on FSC, thanks.

I was going to say the same thing.

We don't get FSC on HD though, and for some reason on our Comcast feed that channel looks REALLY f*cking grainy.

I wish their was something offered where all the games where available and you could choose one to watch. Sort of like the NFL Sunday Ticket on directv.

Meanwhile, they still won't get within sniffing distance of the NHL, which remains relegated to the TV equivalent of Siberia.

who cares. just a major waste of money for espn.

2009-06-22 03:39:05 PM
The La Liga thing is much bigger for US fans. The EPL deal is just Britain, and FSC is still the US supplier, for now. FSC now does Champion's League, so ESPN bought some games from Gol TV, including the Classicos. That's pretty cool, actually. The only time I've been able to watch the Classico was at a friend's parents' house.

each episode is such a trainwreck pokerwise that it makes me feel a lot better about my game

Setanta could be successful if they did something about their pricing model. It's a separate subscription on Dish for $15/month and that's just way too much for people who basically want to see their own soccer team and/or Chelsea and Man Utd. once or twice a month.

And their prices for pay-per-view events are just laughable. They price early-round FA cup games and cricket matches as though they were heavyweight boxing matches.

Get some rugby on. Once America goes All Blacks, they'll never go back.

NOOOOOOOOOO! fark fark fark fark fark. ESPN's soccer coverage sucks ass. Now we'll have to pout up with tape delay, the farking scroll that ruins everything and their idiotic announcers. I really don't want to hear some scrub ex US international spout off US sports cliches all farking game long..

omfg this. i have been playing cash games for years now, and i simply cannot adjust my game to the tournament structure. it boggles my mind how i can absolutely crush the 6/12 omaha game @ my b&m, then get run over on every single $10 or $20 tournament i enter (and don't get me started on sit-n-go's, i am pathetic at those).

but i watch some of the clowns on espn, and i say to myself, well, hell, i guess i'm not that bad...

2009-06-22 03:53:13 PM
Lucky Britain. Now they can "enjoy" non-stop yammering from the play-by-play guy and some know-nothing slut on the sideline giving stupid opinions that add nothing to the game.

I say we give them Chris Berman to get things rolling.

Way better than poker, anyway.

And I guess it's better than the NBA D-League.

I really wonder why the wide world of sports can't cook up a summer football league. You know, 12 teams in cities with no NFL team, short playoffs, season ends just before training camp. People would watch, if just to check out prospects. Why not? And, it would give us something else yet to watch on ESPN besides poker.

2009-06-22 04:00:40 PM
I am farking gutted about La Liga going to ESPN. So instead of 4 to 6 games every week we will get one. Tape delayed to the west coast no doubt.Or PPV on 360. With the scroll and highlights of every other Euro game, farking those of us with DVRs. FARK you ESPN.

Well, that is basically what the UFL will be, other than they think they should be playing in the fall... and half their teams in NFL cities already (SF & NY).

With no team in L.A. still, you could do a league in some reasonably decent sized cities without NFL teams and probably make a go of it. UFL seems to have messed that plan up already. Could have done East division of Hartford, Milwaukee, Orlando, Raleigh and Birmingham. West division of L.A., Vegas, Sacramento, Salt Lake City and Portland.

Well, I'm assuming they won't be using American commentators, it's the English game, for the English/Irish/Scottish audience, no? I mean, this article is geared towards those in the UK, not us in the US.

Still, I farking hate ESPN with a passion, so I am not a fan of this move. Unless, and this is a big unless, they can buy the rights to the rugby and bring that over too. If I can watch live rugby on TV (Apparently I can't subscribe to Setanta on my Comcast), I'd be REALLY happy.

That's fantastic news! It's pretty sweet being able to watch the CL mid-week in the fall and spring, and now the thought of being able to watch the EPL on top of that gets me pretty excited.

this is really the biggest issue. I usually stream the games at work. So i dont really have to go home and rewatch. But im always a fan of soccer being pushed in the states.

dletter:

Huh. I looked it up on Wiki, seems destined to fail. Why insist on being a "major league" and playing in the fall? Do it in the summer, pay the guys $500/game. They'd get a ton of undrafted college players dying to get an invite to training camp, it would be great, and I bet they could get a TV deal. What better to put on ESPN in the summer when there's no day baseball?

Wish I was a venture capitalist sometimes.

2009-06-22 04:28:40 PM
I'm glad to hear that more soccer is getting picked up by the major networks in the States, even if it is on during the day here. It is a fast, steady growing sport here folks, whether you like it or not.

How is calling it soccer insulting? Do you refer to football as American football. I mean, I don't have a problem with using formal terms, its just that most people who say football in America (for soccer) say with the utmost arrogance. Calling soccer football doesn't make you any more of a fan.

that is my exact issue as well.
As much as I'd like to watch the matches, I can't get into them because I can't watch em live, nor discuss them live with people on Fark (and oddly enough, discussing games real-time with other fans is becoming a priority with me with every sport -- if i'm not watching with friends)..

If ESPN shows the games, and i catch a rerun/tape delay.. they'll flash the current score/outcome at the bottom of the screen on the ticker while I'm watching the god damn game.

Unless you work every weekend, this shouldn't be too much of an issue. Most premiership matches are on Saturday and Sunday. So whether it's at 7:30AM, 10:00AM or 12:00PM, if you're off on a Saturday and/or Sunday, you should be able to watch the matches.

I prefer "Armoured Wankball" but "Americanized rugby" works too, especially as it pisses off my buddy who thinks the NFL is the only sport that matters.

Right now we have Confederations Cup, MLS and the U-21 European Championship! England secured 1st place in their group and a spot in the semi-finals while Germany was the other country. In the other group any country can qualify, but it looks like it will be Italy/Sweden. Spain was 3rd place in England's group.

What do you think about Tevez leaving?

Not that you asked me, but I'm glad he left. I'm not sure why everyone loved him so much. He did work hard, but he never put up the numbers for the money he was asking. Seeing as he's not going to Pool and most likely City makes it even better. Tevez leaving frees up more money so that Sir Alex can rebuild the team the way he sees fit. I'm hoping Rooney in the center with Berba feeding him balls or also going up front. Get Benzema (forget Ribbery) and a holding midfielder and we're set.

I welcome all opinions! It's just Tonnage was the only United fan I'd seen in this thread.

I mostly agree with what you said. I wouldn't say I'm "glad" he left though, I really liked him. But he's just not good enough.

Why has nobody signed all those out-of-favour Real Madrid players? Huntelaar, Ruud, Sneijder, M Diarra, Higuain...

I'm going to agree with Stimied here, Tevez was a hard worker, but his reason for leaving was because he "didn't play enough", seriously?? He couldn't really prove his worth coming off the bench, and he's complaining about not playing enough?? I take my favorite player of all time, Ole Gunner Solskjaer, he always played off the bench, proved himself time and time again and never complained once, THAT'S a true United player. So yes, I liked him, I liked his work ethic, but for him to come out and say he wants to leave because he's not playing more is just bollocks.

And like Stimied said, free up some money and positions to bring in someone like Ribery, Villa, Pato, etc. and give more room for Rooney to step up and really shine.
