so they're taking it up the herschel highway?

First I read that as "Hershey Highway" and was all LOLWUT?

Serious reponse though, I suppose it's weird to purposely rename the road just to stick it to the neo-Nazis, but as for "what would happen if they don't pick up the trash?" I think the answer would be "they lose their sponsorship of the road." So I can't imagine it would be trashed on by neo-Nazis long term.

Maybe that's actually the long term goal?

Still, IF they're going to name a road for the guy, it should be the whole normal length and done right.

Heh. Exactly.

The Rosa Parks Highway in St. Louis (pops) nods its head in approval.

/Didn't know this story until a few years ago.
//Always found it odd that that particular roadway was named for Parks before learning the history.

While this is pretty funny, the daughter has a very good point:

"I don't want Nazis stomping on a highway named for my father. What are they going to do then if they don't pick up the litter? The whole thing is disgusting," said Susannah Heschel, professor of Jewish history at Dartmouth College.

"It may be an attempt to teach the neo-Nazis a lesson," she said. "But I think it's an affront to my father's dignity to attach his name to a neo-Nazi highway."

Once again, cunning plan, didn't think it all the way though ...

So they are into passive-aggressive now? Where they will not clean it up for a a few months as they snicker to themselves?

I heard this might happen. I snickered at the irony at first, but I do see her point there.

Kind of like something Teddy Roosevelt pulled back when he was in New York. Some anti-Semitic group wanted to hold a rally and because they were so unpopular they insisted on having police protection. So Teddy assigned nothing but Jewish cops to the protection detail. Gotta love it!

Irony or sweet justice?

So...

...will they only be picking up white trash?

This is the lame ass shiat that wastes taxpayer money. Not only did we pay legislators to come up with this useless bill, how much is it going to cost to make and install all those signs? And for what? Because some Nazis want to clean up a road? How terrible.

My guess is the majority of people that actually see the Adopt-a-Highway sign (which is probably a minority of drivers) won't even know that National Socialists == Nazis. They'll probably think Communists instead.

/Or Obama.

Too bad the daughter has no sense of humor. I would love it if my family name could be used to piss off some neo-Nazis.

I like the that the Missouri Knights of the KKK clean up near a predominately black neighborhood in St. Louis. A local reporter interviewed a bunch of the local residents, and most thought it was a non-issue. One young guy was so cool. He said while he was against littering as a rule, he saved up all his shiat to toss out along that mile of road.

Skandalus, you got me

I saw a highway adopted by Microsoft. They should rename the stretch Steve Jobs Highway. That'll show them!

FTA: A 2005 U.S. Supreme Court ruling arising from a similar effort by the Ku Klux Klan says membership in the Adopt-A-Highway program can't be denied because of a group's political beliefs

And in the second breath the Supreme Court Says "Gays can't get married."

Hey, it's good to know our government is very vigilant when it comes to keeping politics out of.. uh.. politics. But when it comes to religion... Well, let's just turn our heads the other way shall we? Sure am glad this wasn't covered in the constitution.

2009-06-22 02:35:25 AM
I'm appalled at this. In no way should it ever be acceptable for a government to make a mockery of a political belief, especially if it is an unpopular one.

2009-06-22 02:36:35 AM
Neo-Nazis standing on the side of the highway? Isn't that just begging an army of Blues Brothers impersonators to take turns seeing how close they can come to almost hitting them with their cars?

/"Missouri Nazis? I hate Missouri Nazis."

2009-06-22 02:42:07 AM
Why don't they just name it super jew highway or something?

But it has socialist in the name! They must be evil librulz!

Sorry, there seems to be a trend among the uneducated wingnuts lately.

No, this is not " the lame ass shiat that wastes taxpayer money" the whole point of the adopt-a-highway program is to make it so that taxpayers don't have to pay for the costly job of cleaning the highways.

In all actuality, I guess inserting a Kramer joke would work here. I'm just too stoned lazy tired to figure it out.

I think you're missing his point. He's not complaining about cleaning up the highway, he's complaining about wasting all this time and effort trying to stop them from cleaning up the highway.

-1 to the Neo-Nazis for existing
-1 to "lawmakers" for changing the name out of spite

Except that this was in Missouri, and the Buffalo News just happened to pick it up off the AP wire.

Kansas has this requirement:

"Any non-profit group that does not discriminate upon the basis of race, religion or sex can adopt a section of roadway."

So freedom of speech and belief is alright in American but only if it's PC. It's very juvenile to rename a road to spite people you disagree with. I'm okay with it as long as atheists have to clean Jesus Is Lord highway and La Raza has to clean the White Supremecy Freeway. Otherwise people need to grow the hell up and respect the KKK's rights.

You sound fat.

Seriously, if your ideology is based on hating a certain segment of the population, be prepared for some minor backlash every now and then. If you can't take it, then stop hatin'

Which of their rights aren't being respected? I must have missed the constitutional amendment giving me the right to clean a highway with a name of my choosing. They have the right to clean the highway. The government has the right to name the highway (they're paying for it, after all). Why the outrage?

I find it weird that the KKK (and people like O'Reilly, for that matter) are still called political groups. There's nothing political about hatred and social retardation.

None really. But often done for purely advertising purposes. Will I see an "adopt a highway" sign at 75mph on the interstate, let alone read it? Probably not. Same on a state highway in an urban area across the intersection at a red light? Most likely.

2 groups are using "placement/location" as a starting point for whatever arguement they're trying to push. It's subtle, but it's there. Altruism and cleaning up the roadways on the cheap be damned.

Hm. Yeah, it is a bit juvenile. Yes, I'm sure the gubmint has better things to spend their time on. But, you know what? It's pretty damned funny. Come on, you're the internet. Imagine if furries adopted a phone line. You know you'd rename that line something offensive. Or how about Scientologists? You'd name it Xenu's Pink Replicock (with apologies to the Farker of the same name) Memorial Fiber Optic. Don't tell me you wouldn't.

Also, keep in mind that every minute the government spends dealing with this bullshiat is another minute they're not raising your taxes or making up bullshiat nosy neighbor laws. I think I'd prefer to pay them to screw hookers than to pass more fackin laws.

She's missing the point. They're not naming a Nazi highway after her grandfather. They're forcing neo-Nazis to clean up her grandfather's honorary (Hershel) highway.

Now git to jew trash pickin you neo bastards.

I'd have the Hershel Highway patrol keep a brown eye on em too!

I don't support what Neo-nazi's do... but if we can have groups that are self promoting for blacks, mexicans, jews, and pretty much any one, why not white?

Let me reiterate -- I don't support the hate, gangs, and violence, but i support their freedom of choice and beliefs as should everyone.

We wanted to live in a melting pot of culture - well just because they think a certian way is no way to hate on them or let them not adopt a highway (which is a pretty nice thing to do actually).

You can't have your freedom cake and eat it too... if they don't let these guys adopt a highway, then they need to just tear down the ENTIRE "adopt a highway" system. I mean if Neo nazi's are offensive to some people, maybe the NAACP one is offensive to others? I'm just playing the role of the Fair Bear.

This. I hate the Nazis and everything they stand for, but government shouldn't be making any comments on their beliefs, whether they're outright statements or passive-aggressive jabs.

No she doesn't. It's a state highway, adopting it doesn't mean it's affiliated or owned by the sponsoring organization in any way. Just means they clean it up, which, I guess, is nice of them.

//Not like skinheads are incapable of playing nice.

So that stretch of road is being ethnically cleansed?
