No, you're not. I'm concerned that some would make very bad decisions down the road. But that's the price of democracy.

when he says army, does he mean the army army or the IRG

it'd be great if it was the IRG hes talking about. if its the army, that may mean they're giving up their neutrality and siding with the government

I see a crowd. I see no apparent effect of any chemical anywhere.

Although I'm guessing tear-gas grenades will be being used somewhere sooner rather than later. Would already have been broken out if that demo was in the UK.

He can't be on the CNN payroll.

MadTheologian: But that's the price of democracy.

I think the theory behind "Spreading Democracy = Spreading Peace" is that Democratic nations by nature are anti-war. When governance is left up to the population that is governed, they are less patient with sending themselves to die for just any reason. One would hope that by allowing self-governance, the amount of ill will towards other parts of the world would eventually decrease as leaders who truly represent the "people" eventually make their way into positions of power.

I wouldn't expect a sea change in policy over night, but it's the most important first step towards a much kinder, gentler Middle East imho.

From the last thread:

Vacation Bible School: Mousavi - Confirmed - I have prepared for martyrdom - #Iranelection

pk

While it's nice on the surface he's saying he's ready to be a martyr, killing him now is probably one of the worst things the government can do. But I'm on the outside looking in and I have to wonder if those in power are starting to get a bit desperate because:

1) Their attempts at stopping information getting to the outside world haven't worked as well as they hoped.

2) Though the harsh words from Khamenei may have kept some people away but it hasn't stopped them.

3) They are becoming more aggressive in attempting to squelch the protests and even with that people are still coming out.

If they are getting desperate they may begin making irrational decisions in an attempt to stop this beast. One of those may be the arrest and killing of Mousavi which would very likely end up with even more people angry and in the streets.

Even if the protesters win the first round and a more open, democratic government is put into place we'll probably see the hard line conservatives begin their own protests.

Unless the government somehow shuts this down and soon there we won't see a quiet Iran very soon.

God be with the protesters.
