After having to spend an evening at work pretending to care about an art show reception, I am so glad to be back here among people who understand. Everything else seems trivial in comparison to what the Iranian people are going through.

I'd rather have some good ol' Fark snark and the occasional troll mixed in with honest concern for Iranians than listen to inane chatter by people who are oblivious to events outside of their own petty little lives.

alexthegreyhound: VlagimarPutin: iceberg theory: VlagimarPutin: iceberg theory: post and stuff

I think that the USA has been pushing for the youth of Iran to rise up for a long time, and I have little doubt that the CIA is actively providing support for this uprising. OTOH, I also think that Ahmadinejad probably stole the election, and without that, we wouldn't be seeing the uprising.

Is this the work of the CIA? Based on what I know, they're probably heavily involved, but we can't say it's their baby unless the election *wasn't* rigged.

as with other color revolutions it doesn't really matter who wins. if the western backed candidate loses he claims he won. if he wins he claims he won. the purpose is to create instability. everything is going according to plan.

So you're implying that a stolen election wouldn't lead to a week of massive protests without the influence of the CIA?

That's the kicker. He's doesn't seem to think the election was stolen, but rather, the candidate claims the election was stolen to further the CIA/Jew agenda.

why is everyone always saying im talking about jews. ive said nothing about jews.

CNN International seems to be on the following schedule:

-Open show with 15 minutes of sold coverage of what's going on there. Emphaszing that YouTube videos can't be verified. Maybe five minutes more if it's time for the correspondent's once-daily allowed report. commercial

-15 minutes of relatively important but non-Iran-related news. North Korea, etc.

-Rest of the hour is filled up with commercials, repeating the stories, and stupid non-news.

-Show is followed by regularly scheduled sports/business/focus on a certain region show

/All in all not great, but miles ahead of what regular CNN is showing

Oh, I am, but I expect we are going to end up with 2 sets of threads, and the good info will be TF only. Sad too because, obviously, Fark has done well at spreading information, and that is diminished if it goes all TF.

Then the trolls will just go mess up both threads.

Addressing the supposed Lebanese Hezbollah- Iran connection.
*Note: All links will appear in a new window.
First off, forgive me, I'm no expert on any portion of this, but I figured I'd try to see what turns up to end the crying.

My apologies in advance if this becomes TL;DR, I'll try to highlight to help.

Closest proof: This Spiegel Online article references a Voice of America article. I failed to locate a VOA article that specifically mentioned seeing Lebanese Hezbollah in Iran during the protests, so I feel this void. In fact, the only hardcore evidence is that their reporter heard Arab speakers in Iran, I can't tell you if this is a common occurance, but I would believe it isn't a "this is totally hezbollah" proof. Again, not actual proof.

Reasons suggesting Lebanese Hezbollah would assist in Iran:

-This article states that Hezbollah gets most of its $100,000,000+ budget comes from Iran. A reason to help, yes, but proof no.
-The same article states that Hezbollah was originally organized and trained by 1,500 of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Another reason to help, but not proof.
-Using the article again, Hezbollah is dependent on Iranian arms dealers and also considers the Supreme Leader of Iran as the Ultimate Leader. They have a lot of ties to the current Supreme Leader, who reportedly suggested Hezbollah keep its armed wing instead of going completely to Lebanese politics. Another reason to help, but not proof.
-(same article) The current leader of Lebanese Hezbollah studied in Iraq with clerics who had ties to a pro-Iranian political party. He also studied in Qom with disciples of the Ayatollah Khomeini. His father was a follower of an Iranian Cleric Another reason to help, not proof.
-This article treats Hezbollah as little more than an extension of Iran trying to create an Iranian satellite state. This would be a strong reason for helping, but not evidence.
-This article shows the deep relationship between Iran and Hezbollah. A second article agrees.
-This article provides the statistic that Iran provided around one million to help hezbollah win the previous elections. You don't just hand out 1,000,000 to someone and not get help in return. Reason to help, not proof though.

So yeah, I could continue, but the news is pretty much the same along every article. There are very close connections between Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

My overall conclusion is that it if called upon it is highly likely that Lebanese Hezbollah would assist Iran, considering the ties and all the help that they get from Iran. I believe that this is a situation where Iran would be likely to do so. The problem is that no one has specifically been able to identify them as Hezbollah, and it isn't like you can just walk up and ask. I don't think hearing a person speak another language confirms they are there, but given the connection between the two groups, I think there is a good chance it is the Lebanese Hezbollah. Keep in mind though, there really isn't hard proof.

So I hope this stops the complaints/fighting. To the crowd who denies they are there, there isn't any hardcore proof (no one has run down the street yelling "I'm from Lebanon and I'm Hezbollah"). I would like them to know though, that given the close ties between the two countries, there is a good chance they are there assisting.

Well, not exactly rockstar, but definitely in that status.

out of curiosity, to all those saying that those people showing an earnest interest in these threads are wasting their time, that their earnest hopes that maybe in some small way they help the people of Iran manage to assert some sort of change are foolish, I have a question. Do you react the same way to people who say "support the troops?" Or who gathered after Katrina to spread information, gather money, and help people contact family members that ended up scattered to the winds? Or helped with similar endeavors after the Indonesian Tsunami? Or just regular people helping out at a soup kitchen or even just sitting around a table talking about a cause or an event that hold particular import or meaning to them?

You think us naive, to be so hopeful, clearly. Is that really so...offensive to you? Is it so impossible to leave idly by? Are you no longer able at all to be idealistic about anything?

I for one refuse to be so jaded as to believe that wanting and trying and hoping to have even the smallest impact is ever a waste, nor is the eager and rapt thirst for information and knowledge.

If we have done nothing else with our efforts this week we have elevated the general awareness of the fact that Iranians are not all mindless zealots, terrorists, and nuke-mad nutjobs, dirty looking and wild-eyed. People are starting to see that Iranians are essentially and unmistakably human, with different languages and histories and mannerisms, but with the same general capacity for outrage, atrocity, and, most impressively, iron solidarity and nobility in the face of what to most of them must seem like a one-way suicidal journey in the pursuit of the slimmest chance of freedom.

And does out being satisfied with having achieved, at the very least, such a small thing really gall you to such lengths that you have to put strenuous effort into debasing the very sensation of victory, and the ultimate hope of a larger, more tangible one?
