bullwrinkle: I think Letterman explained it very well in his apology that it's all about perception. I understand the joke was about Bristol, but I don't think people are disingenuous for believing the joke was about Willow, after all she was the one at the game.

It depends on the person, I guess. For example, the folks at the "Fire David Letterman" protest are unwilling to accept even the possibility that DL made a mistake... then one talks about how it happened while the Palin's were at a basketball game. It's like when a spelling Nazi criticizes another poster for spelling a word incorrectly but does the same thing in their own post. I tend to stop caring what hypocrites think, regardless of where they fall on the ideological spectrum.

Jackpot777: But not assume he was talking about someone that had already entered the public mind as the knocked-up daughter of Sarah Palin?

Without naming the specific person intended for the butt of the joke, yes you have to assume that the person was actually in attendance of the ball-game. Like I said, he could have been talking about Bristol, and it is entirely possible that he goofed up. It is not that tough to understand.

Well to be fair, conservatives tend to have actual jobs, unlike liberals who are professional protesters.

How many busloads would they have trucked in for protesting a conservative who said something similar about a popular liberal's kid?

crab66: I'm sorry I just don't buy the manufactured outrage and the push to make it seem like it was directed at a 14 year old. I have talked to various people who don't care about politics in the least and it's pretty obvious who Letterman was talking about.

This is just a distraction from Limbaugh, Hannity et al.

I kind of agree, because I am not really outraged here. Letterman made a stupid joke, Palin defended her family. Letterman apologized, Palin accepted. For me, this is the end of the controversy.

The dumbasses that are still protesting and are still attempting to manufacture outrage over this issue need to be egged, IMO.

Really? I don't remember any busloads of liberals protesting the nasty things that were said about Nancy Pelosi's documentarian daughter when her last movie came out.

But then again, you're so full of shiat your eyes are brown.

I think that I had better clarify my position in my response to Jackpot's post.

When I mean "have to assume" in the text you bolded, I am talking in context of the joke, not in the context of what really happend. We really don't know who Letterman was talking about with certainty because no specific names were issued. Anything else is speculation.

Sorry if I was not clear.

Shryke, you're pretty dumb. This was made clear in the last thread I saw you in. Now, I'm not mad at you. But the things you're saying are stupid and you don't make any sense. Please leave this thread or just read it.

It should be fairly obvious to anyone with a brain that David Letterman was talking about the whore daughter (who is, by the way, 18 and therefore fair game, according to the rules lawyers on the Right). The joke doesn't really make sense targeted at Willow, who's not famous for being knocked up. Bristol IS famous for being knocked up. You see? The snag of course is that Willow, and not Bristol, was at the game, but Occam's razor dictates one of two possibilities:
1) Letterman thought it was Bristol at the game. Honest mistake, since she's the daughter that's most often in the news, and when people think "Sarah Palin's Daughter" she comes to mind.
2) Letterman knew Willow was at the game but was speaking about Bristol anyways, because it's funnier that way.

In any case, he shouldn't have apologized, but he did, which was unusually magnanimous of him. If cons want to keep going after him, that's fine. They're annihilating any credibility they had left by doing so.

The President doesn't create jobs. Well, except for when he creates new federal executive positions when he creates unconstitutional executive departments like the Dept. of Education.

So Letterman's joke was, "During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez." And while I thought Letterman was referring to the older daughter who is eighteen, the righties thought of the fourteen year old. Doesn't that make them the pedophiles as they chose the underage girl?

Blah blah, same crap from you. David apologized because the joke was easily and obviously perceived to be about Willow. The guilty party has admitted guilt. Your frantic lawyering is meaningless now.

The good thing about this whole deal is this: Letterman will probably reign in his Palin jokes now, and altogether DROP the farking kid jokes. Yay!

Its amazing to see all the worshippers of Queen Palin claim that their interpretation of someone else's joke is the only one that is accurate and correct. Even after losing two straight elections, badly, they still think their opinions are the only ones that matter.

Actually the president has a big effect on the economy and job creation.

http://economistsview.typepad.com
/economistsview/2008/04/the-presidents.html

clip -

On average, the real incomes of middle- class families have grown twice as fast under Democrats
as they have under Republicans, while the real incomes of working poor families have grown six times as fast under Democrats as they have under Republicans.

These substantial partisan differences persist even after allowing for differences in economic circumstances and historical trends beyond the control of individual presidents.

HeadLever: Unless you can provide the backing info that seperates out federally mandated items or specific federal obligations, that table really does not tell you too much.

If your objection made any sense, I would have provided some here. As it is, you'll have to settle for the bare facts. Some states tend to take in far more federal money and attention than they contribute, yet the political discourse from those areas is dominated by hatred for the government and its abilities. If you have a problem with that, you should raise a specific objection with that point instead of vague generalities that refute nothing. Or you could instead point out Phil's blatant strawman yourself instead of just selectively wharrgarbling.

HeadLever: Without naming the specific person intended for the butt of the joke, yes you have to assume that the person was actually in attendance of the ball-game.

No you don't.

Why can't we assume that the target of the joke was the person that the writers thought was at the game? Or the person the writers assumed was at the game?

Really, the choice is simple - we can believe the joke was aimed at Bristol, which is pretty reasonable since she is extremely well known, has been all over the TV talk show circuit recently, and once actually did get herself "knocked up" - this last item actually making the joke have at least an element of humor.

This would require us to also accept that the writer of the joke didn't check to see which daughter was actually at the game that day. Why? Who the hell knows - laziness, lack of time, lack of caring, trusting assumptions too much, trusting rumors too much, forgetfulness, apathy, blah blah blah

Or we could believe that he deliberately decided to tell an inappropriate sex joke about a fourteen year old girl - a joke which, if it was aimed at her, would necessarily have been based on statutory rape - on national television.

I guess you need some excuse to justify your breathlessy outraged rant about the evils of liberalism, no matter how transparently stupid it is.

2009-06-18 12:43:57 PM
I have really decided that the modern GOP, talk radio and Fox News are just ways for the oligarchy to identify the idiots. I will know this is a fact if they run Palin in 2012. It only makes sense. If you honestly believe that Letterman was talking about 14 year old Willow instead of making a joke about the daughter who was already "knocked up" then you are a retard. If you think that Barack Obama is a socialist you are a retard. If you think that the government has never bailed out an industry before this year you are an idiot. Seriously. The new conservative movement is really just a way to spot dumbasses.

Actually the president has a big effect on the economy and job creation.

Actually, he doesn't. Job creation, over time, is a function of supply, demand, technology and regulation. Of those four the President plays a part in one.

Also, a good analysis of job creation in America necessarily includes an accounting of the jobs LOST due to gov't regulation.

When you expect your President to control your economy you tread on shaky ground capitalism-wise.

Somacandra: As it is, you'll have to settle for the bare facts. Some states tend to take in far more federal money and attention than they contribute, yet the political discourse from those areas is dominated by hatred for the government and its abilities.

Yep, and the numbers represented in your table may or may not have anything to do with that. For example, is this money that the state goverments recive from the Federal Goverment directly, or does it also include money spent by the federal goverment for their own obligations within said state? I hope that you understand that these are two different. If not, let me know and I will clue you in.

If you have a problem with that, you should raise a specific objection with that point instead of vague generalities that refute nothing. Or you could instead point out Phil's blatant strawman yourself instead of just selectively wharrgarbling.

I am pointing our that your logical fallicy in using the table to make the argument that the red states are welfare states. This argument may be true, but it is not apparent from the table that you posted. If you cannot support the basis of the table in the context of my argument against it, you thereby cannot support your assumption that red states are welfare states based off of said table.

/And I was responding to you, not Phil.

Most? I have no idea. But we import more of our oil from Alberta, Canada than from any other foreign source. Canada and Mexico are the top two oil exporters to the United States, followed by Saudi Arabia (though Venezuela occasionally surges into third place).
