This really pisses me off. There are literally hundreds of thousands of dogs that are going to be put to sleep this year because of overpopulation, and our idiot scientists are CLONING dogs? Have people completely forgotten that nature plays a huge role in personality and development? I'm sure those 5 dogs will be adopted and/or cared for because they made the news, and somewhere another 5 dogs will be euthanized because of it.

Stop creating dogs out of thin air, there are already too many of them! If you really want to do the world a service, clone Megan Fox a billion times, and send them all to me.

Those firefighters who ran in the building just after the plane strikes thought it was a typical evacuation. They had no idea of the magnitude of the damage or the danger of collapse.

Many of them never made it out...

I'm not saying the dog deserves to be called a hero, but it did what none of us would ever have the guts to do, so I'm sure that counts for something.

Sure, but they knew they were saving people. They knew they were going into a tall, flaming building that had just been hit by a plane. They knew that it was probably going to be a pretty major historical event.

the ha ha guy: I'm not saying the dog deserves to be called a hero, but it did what none of us would ever have the guts to do, so I'm sure that counts for something.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge dog lover and think K-9 rescue workers are amazing... but they go into situations without knowing the danger and not really for altruism so much as a conditioned response.

As much as I hate dogs, I agree completely. Somewhere, because of this, five dogs will go to the BIG SLEEP without ever getting their own chance to become heroes. Biological organisms are not like DVDs. You can't just duplicate them like you're Jesus, and have the outcome be exactly like the original. Hell, I bet four out of these five turn out genetically defective and get euthanized.

Of course, the whole 'inbreeding for purity of strain' thing is just as creepy. Dogs are all one species. Let them fark each other willy nilly, and let all the fat sex-hating frumpy hausfraus who attend dogshows with their little anklebiting poop factories start giving their husbands blowjobs instead.

If the dog received 5 clones, shouldn't the first sentence have been written 6 times? Also, elchip, I don't see a flash of light preceding the plane's impact or a pod on the underbelly, so that is obviously shopped.

I really don't think that five potentially useful search and rescue dogs (which aren't exactly easy to come by) would be put to sleep solely because they were replaced by these clones. If anything, I suspect that these cloned dogs will be trained separately from the others, and used as mascots rather than actual working dogs.

This.

There is a pretty big difference between a search and rescue dog and an average pound puppy. Sure, a pound puppy may become a rescue dog with the proper inclinations and training. But it takes a certain kind (personality wise) of dog to be able to do search and rescue. Not all dogs will be able to even with the training.

These dogs will have a much greater chance of having the proper predisposition for it. Which is a win.

I love shelter dogs and deal with them a lot. Most of them are pit bull mixes. Few would make decent S&R dogs. There will always be people who specialize in breeding S&R dogs. They are looking at generations of temperament and skill. Assuming these dogs work out, I suspect the guy would be more likely to breed them naturally to make puppies and save all the Mad Science.

Emotion clouds your judgment like a female. The dog was trained to sniff and sniff it did, it had no idea it was in danger and probably wasn't in any real danger. The firefighters were doing there job by going in those buildings. I feel bad for them because they are dead, but if they knew the buildings were about to collapse they never would have went in there.

I had this argument with a friend who claimed hero is used to often and people just doing their job or not putting their selves at risk aren't heroes. Then I mentioned the 9/11 firefighters and he yelled that they were heroes, even claiming they knew the towers were going to collapse before they went in. Logic takes a back seat to emotion. Like people here whining about dogs being put to sleep in shelters, who cares there are to many as it is and nobody wants the ones in shelters anyway, they would have been killed regardless.

When your loved one is moaning from within a deep pile of broken glass and smoking rubble, you don't need just any old mutt. You need a dog proven capable of dragging your loved one out, fearless and dedicated.

There's a time for mutts, and a time for the best of the best you can get.

Bomb Mecca: Then I mentioned the 9/11 firefighters and he yelled that they were heroes, even claiming they knew the towers were going to collapse before they went in.

Anyone who has a basic understanding of the dynamics of fire and stress load knew those buildings were going to collapse. And firefighters know better than most people what fire can do to the structural support beams of a building.

Now, was that thought consciously in their minds, or was something else occupying their immediate attention like "Get those people out of there!"? We'll never know. But there had to have been a good many firefighters who went in knowing the buildings were eventually going to collapse and they still had to get as many people out as possible.

2009-06-18 02:49:18 AM
Of course, the real question is: Have they resolved the telomere issue (by taking donor cells from non-age-degenerating tissues such as muscle or stem cells, perhaps?) or are those poor pups going to get age-related illnesses and organ failure by the time they've fully grown?

Bomb Mecca: The firefighters were doing there job by going in those buildings. I feel bad for them because they are dead, but if they knew the buildings were about to collapse they never would have went in there.

They didn't go in for a job, or for a paycheck, but out of a sense of duty. Watching movies or news reports about it, you end up subconsciously creating characters in place of people, and imposing your own logic on the situation, which is almost never anywhere near reality.

I believe that the only way to truly understand what was going through their minds is to sit down with one of them one on one. The experience WILL scar you for life, in ways you cannot imagine, but you'll never regret it.

It could have been simply "uncontrolled fires make buildings collapse" without thinking about the specifics of the situation at hand. Assuming a building will eventually collapse due to uncontrolled fire seems reasonable.

I'm hoping that I just need to recalibrate my sarcasm detector. Steel framed buildings have collapsed before the WTC.
