Okay, I've been off since roughly the middle of the last thread we had on the topic... could someone catch me up?

Specifically, has there been any more solid verification of the stories about the military supposedly refusing to shoot at the protesters?

2009-06-17 10:17:22 AM
Mr Logo: Is this the tipping point?

It could very well be. Our sources have been hinting to secret meetings going on among the true rulers of the country. There have also been rumors that the military has been disobeying orders from the gov't at the suggestion of the same. There may be a major response to the protests, and it just MAY be a favorable one.

It cheapens the sacrifices being made by people who are fighting not just for their own lives, but the lives of their families, country and culture. Considering France is one of the countries actively protesting the government's actions, the protesters attacking their embassy wouldn't even make sense in the Twilight Zone.

Indeed. Either the Iranian government has become old and complacent since the events of 1979, or they are discovering that launching a revolution is much, much easier than stopping one in it's tracks once it has been launched.

Well, I figured anyone who's actually a protester would get it, but governments aren't really known to be able to recognize snark. Might get the Iranian gov't running around a bit.

"There are no people masturbating here!"

I would love to see the Iranian government issue a response to a threat of massive public masturbation. Sadly I think even they would see it as highly unlikely. Would make for a good show though.

I wouldn't be so sure. And I'm extremely hesitant to link Islamic extremism to the Islamic Revolution so casually. Shia Islam is not so much the source of a lot of the extremist/terrorist types we (the US) have gone after, those guys are more Sunni, Wahhabi school of Islam. Very anti-west, fundamentalist, not nice in any way.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahhabi

Islam is likely going to still feature highly in Iran when all this is said and done, and I'm betting on the protesters now.
But it'll likely be a far more moderate flavor of things than what we've seen dominating the system up to this point.

Earlier, SA said (paraphrasing to stymie search) that Raffsanjani was nowhere to be seen in the emergency meeting (4h ago). Now we get something from XFG saying that Raffsanjani has been rabblerousing among the Grand Ayatollahs (10m ago).

That explains where he was. I'm imagining a cavalry charge over a hill, each horse being ridden by a middle-aged man in a turban...
