hmm.. I have yet to come up with an opinion on this yet, but I thought I'd post anyway. More to come later.

i have to agree with BrandonSi on this one.

"Amusing"? Nahhhhhh
How long has Slashdot been around?
I've heard of it....but not really....understand? =)

2003-02-19 11:30:04 AM
And they do all this without once mentioning Fark. Go figure.

I love how the part that CT is most worried about, is the beloved comment ratings...

Oh, and before I forget: U teh f4550t 14m3r5...

Be the first in your neighborhood to be a karma whore!!

I swear that site treats it like currency.

2003-02-19 11:57:07 AM
So you get ALL of the truly geeky information that you can possibly NEVER want...Great...

2003-02-19 02:06:06 PM
I think I've decided that I really don't give a rats ass what the geeks do. Go for it guys.

People would actually pay to get more articles, and get them ealier? I can't imagine... oh, wait...

I'm just waiting for TotalNewsMax or totalYellowTimes.

Slashdot < Fark

Slashdot = Old and Busted, Fark = New Hotness.

Slashdot: Because Not Everyone Can Be Fark

Slashdot: Home of Fark Rejects.

I could go on, but I won't.

Followers. They just want to be like Fark

2003-02-19 02:30:50 PM
Slashdot's beyond it's days.

I used to love it, I have a 20k user account (not bad considering they're over 500k now), now I come over to Fark for my daily Quickies (remember how cool those were?) and news.google.com and Theregister.co.uk for nerd news.

2003-02-19 02:30:54 PM
I am a geek, a big geek, and I read /. but I couldnt imagine paying for that. I would pay for TotalFark though because it's all news and I like news. I also like telling my Dad how wrong he is when he quotes news stories because I actually read all the news before he does and it makes him mad. Oh the joys of Fark.

2003-02-19 02:31:03 PM
honestly. why waste your money on Total______ when you could be being beer.

or taking lessons on coherent thought and proofreading.

2003-02-19 02:32:11 PM
It's interesting that TotalFark is not used (as far as I can tell) for spotting typos/dead links/general errors. I've replied to a few articles before they hit the main page, but nothing ever seems to get fixed (not that it's realistic to expect this of the admins, given the volume of articles/comments posted).
I doubt it would really be different on 'TotalSlashdot', but who knows.

They could warn us of typos, dupes etc.

Yay! /. has figured out how to get people to pay to be proofreaders! Excellent!

That's funny. Slashdot is the rock bottom of "web journalism." I quit posting there and even reading for the most part a while ago... too many pointless flamewars, too much wasted time. At least one can have a normal discussion here, and I actually feel that my TotalFark $$ goes to something worthy, not to some idiots who couldn't give 2 shiats about their site.

I like the "gold star" idea... hahaha I wonder where that came from.

2003-02-19 02:38:11 PM
Anything for a buck. Can I be a uber-leet lunix geek too? It's really funny to bash MS and Bill Gates, because it is in fact still 1990.

Slashdot = News that's important to no one and not even that interesting most of the time.

Fark is no different. You take other people's ideas and improve upon them. It's really about who's willing to do the work.

2003-02-19 02:40:30 PM
TotalNewsMax.. where do i sign up??

2003-02-19 02:40:51 PM
so you get to pay for no additional content

sounds like a good idea.

"... too many pointless flamewars, too much wasted time."

Funny I was thinking the same thing about Fark. At least I didn't pay for TotalFark.

2003-02-19 02:41:04 PM
I cant believe the stupid Slashdot vs. Fark comments Im seeing. They both have their place and I visit both sites. No boobies? Big deal. I dont need Fark for that, I got Google.

The comment section on Slashdot is a little better, its much easier to have a coherent conversation.

People make fun of the karma ratings, but what about the photoshops here? Not much different.

2003-02-19 02:41:25 PM
does DREW get royalties ??!?! I mean, his idea right ?!

2003-02-19 02:41:30 PM
wait till the 1st time this total content idea goes mainstream.
TotalBaskinRobbins: try the 32nd flavor 1st!
TotalFord: all model years 2 years in advance!
TotalTV: extra boobies, no commercials!
TotalPub: 12 stools, no waiting!
TotalBank: bigger loans, lower interest!
McTotal: to hell with drive thru. WE DELIVER!
TotalRoad: 150mph. minimum.

and of course...
TotalTotal: the breakfast cereal you eat on the can, cause you ain't got no time for digestion!

Anyone remember this gem?

Blink: The big difference, of course, is that the Slashdot editors are -- get this -- paid a very nice salary!!! And they treat their site as if they don't care. The Slashdot people don't own the site like Drew owns Fark; it's owned by a corporation.

2003-02-19 02:44:32 PM
I'm sorry... but I just can't read slashdot. Not because of the content, but the site is ugly as hell. It hurts my eyes, because everything looks like a coagualted mess.

And ripping off TotalFark? NOT cool.

2003-02-19 02:44:36 PM
Will they be dropping all references to boobies too?

2003-02-19 02:45:54 PM
Wow, it makes me feel so special that Fark cares about it's users enough to charge them for content they don't even create...

2003-02-19 02:46:33 PM
Nice how he posted that in a way to ensure most people wouldn't be able to post in the comments to call him out on his "innovative" idea.

2003-02-19 02:47:00 PM
Woo hoo ! This means that for a paid Slashdot account, I can alway be the first to say on their boards, "Can you imagine what a beowulf cluster of (whatever item it is ) would be like !?!"

2003-02-19 02:47:00 PM
If they use the "gold star" idea I hope Drew sues the pants off these chumps.

2003-02-19 02:47:30 PM
noooo... the slashdotters will never leave their houses now! it's like cheap malt liquor is to poor people... it will be the destroyer of the geek community.

2003-02-19 02:49:18 PM
Actually, McDonald's already does deliver around here. =)

2003-02-19 02:52:14 PM
I used to be an avid slashdot reader. I switched to fark.com a few months ago. It is not even funny how the average discussion on fark.com is more intelligent and sensible comparing to slashdot. Also, the topics on Slashdot are pretty boring as of last few years ( bash microsoft. whine about ria suing music pirates. bash microsoft some more. )

2003-02-19 02:53:08 PM
Surely we have a few Farker lawyers (e.g. Litig8r, I'm sure there are others). Let's just file some lawsuits on these guys just for fun! Think about it, TSG would post the court documents, we could link to the news stories, it'd be one big self-promoting event.

2003-02-19 02:53:58 PM
"So I posted a dupe again. It happens. Of course this time was pretty amazing because I went a full 2 hours, and didn't know until someone in the office told me. I'm pretty busy on tuesdays (we have staff mtgs on tuesdays) so I usually don't have much time to read comments. Course in 2 full hours, not a single user emailed me."

Can't take a hint, can you CT?

I want a TotalWilWheaton.net account.

2003-02-19 02:55:58 PM
I'm with Albinoman on this one. Both sites have their place. They provide some scatterings of hard science and science fiction info that I'm too lazy to track down on my own. Now, that said, I'd never pay for the content that /. provides. I get a lot more value from my Total Fark Account than I would over there. To me the Troll content seems to be about equal on both boards; only the focus differs.

Thank you RussionRouletteWithACapgun . I thought i was the only one that thought of Zell when I saw his tatoo
